I have worked as a nanny for years and with a broad spectrum of ages. Most recently I have worked for a couple of families as a mother's help after they have recently given birth to lovely babies. I adore this job as it gives you not only a real opportunity to see a child develop very quickly, as they do at that age, but also a sense of what it is like to be a new mother. I definitely know I want to have children when I am older so I am using this experience as a bit of a lesson in preparation.
As such I keep an eye out for any nifty products that these families use to make their day to day lives that little bit easier. I also find that with new parents the number of gadgets in the household seems to rise because there is that constant worry of checking up on the health of the child. I think it is right to be cautious and if you can own some gadgets that simply put your mind at ease then all the better.
This is a product I've actually seen a number of families buying and so I was intrigued to use this myself as I thought there must be something behind it if so many people are purchasing it. The idea behind it is that it is a more accurate, faster and easier thermometer than ones that have gone before. It can be used for oral, underarm of rectal (eek) use and a handy instruction manual is provided to help with this. It also has a hypoallergenic tip which means that there is less chance of an allergic reaction which is definitely a positive for new mums and dads as there tends to be a hyper awareness of the potential things that could go wrong. Anything that puts their minds at ease is a positive as far as I'm concerned.
The thermometer comes in a hard plastic packet with vicks branding and information about the product. The thermometer itself is mainly white plastic with a clear plastic digital screen and a gold coloured metal tip. The design is not exactly going to blow you away but that isn't what is important when it comes to health so that wouldn't put me off.
One of the handy features of this particular device is that it has a memory function. This means that you can monitor temperatures over the day and then be able to review them to see how they have changed across the period of time. The last temperature taken is also shown on the screen as you switch it on which is also rally useful when monitoring the temperature of a sick child across the night for example.
Other useful aspects of this device is that it has a 0.1 °C margin of error which is very small. You can get a reading from this product within 30 seconds which makes it very quick to use. There is no mercury used in this thermometer which is a big reassurance for worried parents as mercury is potentially harmful. It can be used orally, underarm or rectally which is a benefit if you are particularly worried and want to double check a reading.
Other things that also make it easy to use are that the digital screen is backlit so this can be easily used in the dark or a poorly lit room - definitely useful if you are looking after a sick child or baby that you don't want to wake up. The thermometer is completely waterproof which means if can be totally disinfected after use which is another major positive. There isn't anything in the booklet to suggest you can't but I have avoided sterilising it just because it is a bit unknown what steam could do to it. I tend to wash it in warm soapy water.
It has a nice storage case and comes with a 3 year warranty which is certainly useful and gives you a little peace of mind. It also has an automatic shut off function which means that the battery life of the device is preserved. The batteries for the device are already installed and spares are not provided so these would need to be purchased - though the battery on mine has barely dwindled.
So, what do I think of this device overall? I have used a number of thermometers and I do think that generally you tend to only use them briefly so there does seem to be a number of extra features on this which probably aren't entirely necessary. That said, these features are the things that puts a worrying parent's mind as rest. I've found them very useful in my line of work and my personal life. I've also found that it works better and more quickly than other thermometers I've used.
This device also only costs around £4 (without p+p) from amazon. That seems like a really decent price to me for a device that is time and worry saving. I've been using my personal one for a few months now and found it to be consistently good and extremely useful at all times.
Overall, a handy device that will keep anxiety away.
