Joy-Rides
by pink_glitter I have suffered from travel sickness for quite a while, but have managed to control it by eating before travelling and taking a Boots Travel Calm tablet before a long journey. Prior to my last holiday, I realised I had run out of my trusted Travel Calm tablets so headed to Boots to get some more. The pharmacist I spoke to said they were ... having trouble getting the Travel Calms but she had something 'exactly the same' so I said I'd take them without querying any further. I admit, I presumed that they would just be the branded version (whatever that is) of the Boots tablets. When I got home and took these out of the bag, I was surprised to see they were called Joy Rides. I'm sure this probably says something about how my mind works, but my immediate thought was that she'd sold me a box of condoms! Even now, I still don't like the name joy rides, I feel it's a bit of an odd name, but at least it's memorable! Joy Rides are travel sickness tablets suitable for both adults and children over three years of age. Each box contains 12 tablets - two strips of six. The active ingredient is Hyoscine Hydrobromide 150mg and they also contain mannitol, erythrosine (e127), povidone, raspberry flavour, microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate. All relevant warnings are given on the pack - do not take if you have had allergic reactions to hyoscine or other ingredients, talk to your doctor if you are pregnant etc... As these are an over the counter medicine, check any concerns with the pharmacist. There can be side effects such as dizziness, dry mouth and blurred vision, but thankfully I did not suffer any myself. So I'm off on my holiday, I board the plane and then remember that I haven't taken my tablet. I open the box of Joy Rides and find that despite the woman in Boots telling me that these are 'exactly the same' as Travel Calm, in fact these ones have to be chewed whereas Travel Calm's are swallowed with water. I don't like chewing tablets and so I wasn't best pleased about this. When I opened the tablets which are a chalky pink colour, I didn't like the smell of them either which put me off. When it came to actually taking one of these tablets however, they didn't taste that bad. They're supposed to be raspberry but they just tasted like a sort of fruity chalk! For an adult you need to take two tablets and this should be 20 minutes prior to travel ideally. Children would need to take between half and 2 tablets depending on their age - there is a full and easy to read guide on the box. In terms of performance I have found these to be good. They saw me through the plane journey there and back when I went on holiday, as well as a separate journey to the Grand Canyon on the most terrifying mini plane journey of my life. Now if I could get through that turbulence without being sick (it was so bad a woman on the plane was crossing herself and praying!) then these must be good. They also got me through a buggy ride in the dessert too - another thing I don't wish to repeat - as well as other journeys since. A pack of Joy Rides cost just £3.18 from Boots which I think is a reasonable price. On the whole I found these to be good. Boots Travel Calms are still my favourite as I prefer to take tablets which can be swallowed with water rather than chewed. If I find myself in a position where I can't get hold of Travel Calm again though, then I would happily buy another pack of these. Read the complete review |

Solpadeine Plus Soluble Tablets
by Tolteca I am and have to be careful with money, so when I get a headache or a twinge of pain I hit my value brand painkillers first and these usually do the job without breaking the bank. But there come times when the cheap pills just can't cut it. When this happens, the I reach for these. Solpadeine Plus is a ... soluble pain killer so it gets to work faster than pills which need to dissolve in the stomach. It is also easier to swallow, which is not something I usually have a problem with but I know others do. I did, however, find this invaluable after I had my tonsills out and swallowing became very painful. Two of these pills popped into a nice soothingly chilled glass of water four times a day eased the pain in my throat and made life possible again. This was especially the case as these pills contain 30mg of caffeine, which I am addicted to and had problems drinking enough coffee or tea to keep my usual caffeine/blood mix at the necessary to me level. Other people who don't normally drink industrial levels of caffeinated drinks may find the caffeine content of these pills problematic though and should take this content in mind before taking. What is more important and potentially dangerous and so necessary to take into account is the other two ingredients: paracetamol and codeine. The paracetamol content is the usual 500mg you get in value packs, which does make these pills comparativly expensive. Because of the potential for lethal liver damage from exceeding the recomended daily dose of paracetamol it is essential not to take more than eight tablets a day and reduce this if taking any other product with paracetamol in it. A more insidious danger comes from the ingredient which really takes pain out and gives it a good kicking - codeine. This is an opiate derivitive and as such does have the danger of becoming addictive. It is recomended because of this that you should not take this product continously for more than three days. If taking for headaches, extra care should be taken with regard to this as withdrawl from codeine can in itself cause worse headaches. With all this taken into account, however, these pills are brilliant at dealing with moderate short term pain. Two of these taken after the injection wore off let me eat a bacon sandwich two hours after my dentist took a wisdom tooth out in the chair. They did a brilliant job after the tonsils came out and when I do get a headache the basic paracetamol pills cannot ease, these do. They are expensive. 32 will cost you £5.30 or 530 Advantage points, though they are sometimes on offer, which is when I stash them in the first aid cupboard. They are also available from pharmacies and larger supermarkets. They will not let you or yours down, though they should not be used by the under twelves. They will deal with dental, period, head, sciatica and other moderate pain and when used carefully will be an essential staple of your first aid kit. They are of mine. Read the complete review |

GlaxoSmithKline Eumovate Eczema and Dermatitis Cream
by Nik-Nac After suffering with my eczema for almost a year, and getting fed up with regular visits to my pretty useless doctor's surgery I googled my problem and came up with this little cream. I read a lot of good reviews about it and couldn't order it fast enough. As soon as it arrived I felt a little disappointed. It is quite a small ... tube, not what I was expecting at all for the price (about £5.50) but I soon realised that very small amounts of this cream are needed to really make a difference to cracked, itchy red flare ups. It is a miracle cream. It is a mild steroid cream (which is why it can be purchased over the counter) so should not be used for long periods of time and should be applied sparingly. It should not be used on the face, as skin is thinner there and steroid creams over time thin skin even more. As soon as I applied this cream to the area I was affected (my hands) the itchiness subsided. My flare up was gone within four days and I still had plenty of cream left for my next flare up. The cream doesn't really have a smell and is rich rather than greasy. I have found storing this in the fridge can help as it really calms down itchy skin. Read the complete review |
