Advantages: IT DEFINITELY HELPS
Disadvantages: FOUL
Any regular readers of my reviews will no doubt be aware by now that I have several health problems, one of which is a chronic condition that I was diagnosed with around three years ago.
One of the rather unfortunate side effects of this illness is that it causes quite severe ulcerations in my mouth and on my tongue. This has led me to try all sorts of various products for the treatment of mouth ulcers - everything from mouth washes and oral rinses, to gels and all manner of potions.
The Adcortyl was first prescribed to me by my dentist, around a year and a half ago, whilst I was there for my six-monthly check up. She happened to comment on how sore and painful the ulcers in my mouth looked (I think I had two or three at the time) and I replied that this was the little blighters hugely improved from the previous few days, when they had been much worse, to the point of me being unable to eat or drink much at all.
My dentist sympathised with me very much at this point, saying that if this was an improvement in the ulcerations then she could only imagine how painful they had been over the previous few days! My dentist already knew of the health problems and conditions I suffer from as some of them obviously have oral manifestations.
She asked me what medications I had been using to try and alleviate the symptoms. I replied that I had been using a mouthwash and an oral fluid, both of which weren't making much difference to the ulcers. She then suggested that I try the Adcortyl and offered to write me a prescription for a tube of the liquid, to which I replied that yes, I would give it a try.
She gave me some advice about how to apply it and advised that it wasn't at all pleasant to use, which did not surprise me in the slightest, having used just about every similar product on the market, and knowing from my own experiences how foul-tasting many of them are. She advised me that it was more of a 'paste' than a liquid.
I have continued to use the Adcortyl paste any time that I am troubled with ulcers ever since that first recommendation by my dentist, not because I think it is a miracle cure, but because I find it fairly easy to use and it is slightly more effective than many other remedies I have tried before.
To use Adcortyl, you simply need to smear a little of the paste over the affected area, i.e. the mouth ulcer, and then just leave it alone! That means that it is quite difficult to find a suitable time to use the paste as if you eat or drink after use, you will simply wash it all off and need to re-apply it, which isn't a particularly pleasant experience! I for one much prefer to apply it only ONCE in any given day (if I can get away with doing so, depending on the pain) so would not recommend applying it say, before lunchtime when it will be removed by the time you have finished your meal.
Anyway, my preferred time to apply the paste is at bedtime, when I find that there is less chance of me managing to lose it by saliva or food/drink. I tend to brush my teeth as usual then apply a blob of the paste onto the offending area, which is usually on the inside of one of my cheeks.
This practice seems to work for me as there is usually still a small trace of the paste evident in my mouth the following morning, although I do find that this is rather disgusting and usually rinse my mouth out as soon as I get up to banish any traces of the foul stuff from my mouth.
The paste is a horrible-looking off white colour and the texture has a rather gritty feel to it when smearing onto your mouth. It is also quite greasy and very thick - gloopy, as I like to call it. Ewww.. I'm actually shuddering as I write this!
To be perfectly honest though, I find that the unpleasantness of it all is worthwhile. I have used it on ulcerated areas in my mouth that are so painful that I struggle to touch them. After using it for a day, or sometimes two, the ulcer is usually half the size, and gives me around half the amount of pain, which basically means I can eat and drink normally again!
The relief that this little tube of wonderful disgustingness has given me cannot be put into words to write here. A mouth ulcer may seem like a bit of a minor complaint, but the inflammation in my mouth has been so bad at times that it has reduced me to tears - and I'm by no means a wimp when it comes to pain.
The taste of Arcortyl is really something else! It kind of tastes like something medicated, alongside something very fishy! I don't know why the manufacturers feel the need to produce a MOUTH paste tasting of fish, but there you go. Surely in this day and age, when we can send men into outer space, and invent all manner of wonderful technological gadgets, we can produce a rather more palatable tasting mouth cream? Strawberry flavoured might be nice! :-/
I can't really describe the taste of the mouth paste as anything other than highly unpleasant. The fact that the paste is so disgusting doesn't surprise me in the slightest as most other similar medications I have tried before and since that time have all been rather foul too.
Adcortyl can be prescribed by your dentist, or your doctor, although it can also be purchased over the counter in your local pharmacy. It might be worth checking out whether it is available to buy over-the-counter at your own pharmacy if you are prescribed it, as it may well work out to be a bit cheaper than paying the cost of a standard prescription.
That said, a tube of Adcortyl will cost you the best part of a fiver, but if you get anything like the pain that I suffer from in your mouth, it is worth every penny. It does seem really expensive, especially as the small tube is only 5g - tiny really - but a little goes a long way with this wonder paste, and I find that I only need a small amount smeared over each ulcer to provide me with relief.
All in all, you can not put a price on pain relief, or I can't at least, and particularly not when it is concerning such sensitive areas like your cheeks and tongue.
I would give it five stars - a top class product, and thank GAWD I got to know of it, even if my introduction to the wonder paste was a little delayed.
Summary: A LITTLE TUBE OF WONDER PASTE - FIVE STARS FROM ME!
