Advantages: Inexpensive. Palatable. Slightly soothes throat.
Disadvantages: Doesn't work. Useless.
I recently had a cough - as everyone seems to have at the moment - and I've been going through cough syrup like water! One such cough syrup I've used is Asda Chesty Cough Syrup which has been in my cupboard for a while and I found it one night when I'd run out of the Benilyn I'd been using. The medicine comes in a glass bottle and contains 300mls of the syrup solution. It has a screw cap which is easy to remove and replace, but unfortunately the lid area does get pretty grubby and sticky once you have poured the syrup from it once or twice - although you can hold it under the tap to keep it clean! There are directions on the back of the bottle and also in a leaflet that is inside the box that the bottle comes in. There is a little plastic spoon that comes with the bottle - but I never used this as I used my ordinary household spoons.
The syrup is cherry flavour and tastes fairly pleasant, although it is thick and gloopy. It is not a chore to take it. As per the instructions, I took 10mls (2 teaspoons) ever 3 hours (as needed). In theory, I expected that, as the syrup was thick, it would coat my throat and be soothing, alleviating my symptoms somewhat. I am yet to come across a cough syrup that does anything by "take the edge off', and so I wasn't expecting miracles.
To be honest, I would say that the effects of this cough syrup was minimal, at best. Although it slightly soothed my throat (which was sore), it didn't really suppress my cough at all - and I found myself coughing as much as ever! Like I said, although I didn't expect miracles, I was very disappointed in this product. There were no side effects from taking it (as there was little effect at all). I really cannot recommend this product for use by anyone. Cheap - but pointless.
Summary: Not recommended.
