Advantages: It can relieve most hayfever symptoms
Disadvantages: Can dry your mouth .
I suffered from hayfever from the very young age of four. My parents thought the symptoms were similar to asthma but luckily, it turned out to be only hayfever.
More than twenty years later. . . I still suffer from hayfever. . . sometimes experienced unbearable breathing difficulties and if it gets worse . . . l might need to be hospitalised from time to time if l run out of breath.
I live in a small town (more like a village) with high pollen counts because of the trees, green grass, and flowers; I suffer during spring and summer not forgetting cold and flu at winter! As a hayfever sufferer, I tried most of the remedies available in the market, so I'm very familiar with most brands and I know exactly what possibly will or will not work.
~~~What is Hayfever? ~~~
Hayfever (allergic rhinitis) occurs when you are allergic to pollen (allergen), which in turn makes you allergic or sensitive to grass or weed...it has nothing to do with hay what so ever... there are two kinds of allergy
Seasonal- occurs particularly during pollen seasons. Seasonal allergic rhinitis does not usually develop until after 6 years of age.
Perennial - occurs throughout the year. This type of allergic rhinitis is commonly seen in younger children
Unfortunately, I have 'throughout the year' allergy and all of the symptoms related to it! Unluckily it's getting even worse these days (during Spring and Autumn).My symptoms are: runny nose mainly watery, nasal congestion and itching, to none stop headaches Continuous and constant Sneezing, very uncomfortable dry, sore and painfully aching throat (which I hate most), prickly, irritated watery eyes you can't help scratching your eyes which can leads to make the eyes painfully red and swelling and may causes inflammation!
My brain stops functioning and I lose sleep most nights!
~~~Benadryl One A Day Relief~~~
I have used numerous brands of tablets, nasal spray and even tried some injections as a last resort in the past; most of them made me drowsy, sleepy and my head felt heavy and lost concentration until I came across Benadryl One A Day Relief. I was at Boots The Chemist looking for hayfever treatment after I nearly lost hope! I asked the pharmacist and she recommended it to me. I knew Benadryl as a cough syrup that I used to have when I was younger. I tried it that night and I felt much better from one tablet!
~~~Product information~~~
Each pack contains 7 tablets, enough for one week.
Taking only one tablet daily, makes it easier for people who find it hard to swallow a tablet (like me) or even forget to take their medication.
It is a daily relief from hay fever and year-round allergy symptoms. It can also relieve some skin rashes (redness) caused by allergy or sensitivity.
Benadryl One A Day Relief is used by adults and children over 12 years for the following:
Hayfever (mild-severe)
Dust allergy-house mites
Pet allergy
Skin allergies (rashes)
It treats hayfever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and year-round allergies such as dust and pet allergies (perennial allergic rhinitis). It can relieve symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing and watery or itchy eyes. It can also relieve urticaria (hives or itchy skin rash); that means almost all my symptoms!
~~~The science bit!~~~
The active ingredient in Benadryl One a Day Relief is Cetirizine hydrochloride 10 mg.
Other ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, lactose, colloidal anhydrous silica and magnesium stearate.
The film coating contains hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (E464), titanium dioxide (E171) and polyethylene glycol.
~~~How much can you take and the directions . . .~~~
You can know instantaneously from the name of the product that it's only once a day. This tablet should be taken by adults and children 12 years and over. This should be taken with a whole glass of water, please don't swallow without water as it can cause choking and the tablet leaves bitter taste on the mouth.
~~~My experience ~~~
I initially used Benadryl One A Day Relief for one week (a whole pack).
Size wise . . . the tablet is not big; when taking the medication l swallowed it with a big glass of water but it didn't swallow easily and I felt a slight bitterness and it lasted for a while in my mouth.
It has a very fast action, and because it is the only product to contain Acrivastine after 20 minutes my symptoms were relieved and my nose was unblocked and I stopped sneezing. Sorry to say the redness hadn't gone and my nose still as red as a candy apple!
As for itchy eyes, the itchiness has stopped and the redness had improved well.
During that day I felt much better; the hayfever symptoms were less but didn't disappear. However, I felt quite dizzy, drowsy and unbalanced even though it is a non drowsy formula, so my advice to you never drive or operate any machine while taking the medication and don't mix it with alcohol . . . My headaches didn't go completely, and I felt quite sleepy and not in the mood for anything.
It did leave a dry mouth indeed. I never stopped drinking all day and I was a bit sick and unwell but I'm not sure if it was because of the medication or the hayfever. Despite the reservations, I liked the medication.
l have used it now for almost a year, and it is one of my favourite antihistamine treatments. l use it in combination with a nasal spray for extra help and fast relief.
~~~Other conditions used for . . . ~~~
Every now and then, l get a sudden rash all over my body. l take a tablet, and it helps to ease the redness and the itchiness as well.
~~~Warnings, Cautions and Side Effects (Read Carefully)~~~
Only take once daily so don't overdose your medication. In case of over dose or taken more than once please go to nearest hospital for help.
Each tablet contains 0.07 g lactose. So it's unsuitable for people with lactase insufficiency, galactosaemia or glucose/galactose malabsorption syndrome.
Never ever give to children under 12, it's for adults and over 12 only, for kids there is Benadryl One A Day Relief for kids.
Don't use if you are pregnant or think you are. If you are breast feeding as well DON'T USE IT!
Like all medicine it has some side effects that worth mentioning. You
~~~may experience one or more of these side effects or may have none. They are:~~~
headaches,
dizziness,
drowsiness,
agitation (tension, distress or anxiety)
dry mouth,
Upset stomach or fits.
~~~Prices and availability~~~
The price varied from £1.99-£2.89 for a pack of 7, depending on where you buy it, but I found it at one online site for a whooping £4.45 !! So please shop around before you buy; I recommend to buy it from boots, 50% off if you are a health club member and every so often they have buy-one-get-one-free offer and you can combine these two offers together, which I did many times!
~~~Would I recommend it? ~~~
Yes, with one daily, it is nice and easy and forget about these slight side effects because every medicine has its side effect but please don't forget that it has lactose!
It is a little pricy as you can buy similar treatment for cheaper but it won't be as fast and effective as Benadryl One A Day Relief, so it's worth it.
~~~Conclusion~~~
There is always a non-medical treatment for hayfever and allergies by avoiding places surrounded by trees, flowers, and green grass. Staying away from some animals like cats and dogs, closing windows when the pollen count is very high will help. There are even some dietary ways to help ease hayfever when it strikes!
However, if you are looking for a fast action treatment with fast and visible results I recommend using Benadryl One A Day Relief. It really works and helps to relieve the symptoms fast.
I'm using it at the moment and am very happy about the results.
I hope that helps.
