Advantages: Topical pain relief that works
Disadvantages: Wears off quite quickly
Ugh, mouth ulcers. As if having a cold isn't unpleasant enough, along come these annoying and painful little sores, as if you needed reminding that you're really run down.
Alternatively, you might have sores from rubbing braces, or dentures... or you might need pain relief for a teething baby.
Fortunately, bonjela is here to help. It's a clear, thick gel (a little bit like hair gel in texture) that comes in a blue metal tube. You put a small amount (the size of a tiny pea) on your finger and apply it topically to the sore area.
Active ingredient cetalkonium chloride kills bacteria, while choline salicylate, a derivative of aspirin, relieves pain. Hypromellose is the excipient to carry the active ingredients, and helps to deliver the relief that this gel offers over a sustained period of time. Anise oil, menthol and sodium saccharin give it a slightly sweet eucalyptusey, aniseedy taste. Ethanol and glycerol are also included in the ingredients.
Bonjela really does work to dull pain in your mouth and reduce swelling. It also seems to clear ulcers up more quickly, presumably by seeing off bacteria. It works pretty immediately on application. It's cheap at around £3 for 15g.
Application can be a little tricky - the gel is quite thick and it doesn't always want to slide off your finger. Also, you can only use it once every three hours, though I personally find that it offers pain relief only for about an hour and a half. Drinking liquids or eating seems to reduce the action of the gel.
Summary: Worth checking out if you suffer from mouth ulcers.
