Advantages: Works well.
Disadvantages: After taste and smell.
Since I got with my hubby I have always had a tube of this in our first aid box. He used to get ulcers and things quite regularly because of the amount of rubbish we used to eat! After all this time I had my first opportunity to use the other day. I was eating a sweet and putting every effort into chewing it and instead of biting the sweet, I bit a massive chunk out of my cheek. My eyes watered straight away and I was left with a big lump on the side of my mouth. After moaning and complaining to my hubby he recommended that I use some Bonjela on it.
What is it?
Bonjela is a gel that is recommended for teething and mouth ulcers. It helps to relieve the pain that is experienced and is sugar free. It can be used on children as young as 4 months and should be applied every three hours. They come in a range of sizes and I got mine from Sainsburys for around £1.20 for a 15g tube.
My experience.
I opened the lid and the first thing I noticed was the smell. It was exactly like the aniseed balls I used to eat when I was little. When I squeezed out a bit of the gel onto my finger I noticed that the gel was clear in colour and it had quite a thick consistency to the point where the blob I squeezed out just sat on my finger. I applied it to the area that needed some tender loving care and immediately felt a tingling sensation. After a little while I could tell that the area was slightly numb. I applied it a few more times during the day and it healed up pretty quickly and stopped it from hurting.
I didn't like the taste much. Initially it tasted nice but left an awful after taste which I wasn't keen on. I also didn't like the fact that I couldn't eat anything for a while after because of the taste it left in my mouth but that's probably a good thing!
I also use this on Noah and Elijah when they are teething. The both absolutely love the taste and it seems to settle them down for a while. I have been using it quite a lot lately as Elijah as been a bit groughy and has a sore bum and red cheeks. I tend to apply it to his gums before he goes to bed and that tends to help him to settle.
This stuff does work but there is one major problem that puts me off it. I always find that after my hubby has used it, his breath really stinks of fish. It's really off putting and I can smell it from a mile away. It actually makes me urge and even if he cleans his teeth a few times, the smell still lingers. Not very good for romance!
Verdict.
This stuff is definitely worth having in your cupboard as it's great for all of the family. It tastes very nice but the after taste is a little gross and so is the smell but if it stops your mouth from hurting then I can live with that!
Summary: A good teething gel with a funny after smell.
