Advantages: Does work, although some ulcers take a bit longer to clear up than others.
Disadvantages: Not all of my ulcers can be cleared up with the gel but most are.
I often suffer from mouth ulcers inside my cheeks, on my tongue and on the underside of my bottom lip when I'm feeling stressed or under the weather (or both!), all of which can make simple tasks like eating and drinking a painful process. I'd tried Bonjela in the past for large mouth ulcers on the inside of my mouth but found it to be uneffective at the time for those but I recently suffered a small but particularly uncomfortable ulcer on my tongue and could only find Bonjela in the nearest pharmacy. In my desperation, I decided to buy it anywhere and hope for the best.
INGREDIENTS
Bonjela contains choline salicylate, cetalkonium chloride and ethanol. If I'm being entirely honest, I've no idea what these ingredients do in terms of pain relief but I find this to be an effective treatment for most of my mouth ulcers.
THE GEL
The gel itself is pale, veering towards transparent and quite thick for a gel. It has quite a nice taste, which is handy as the taste lingers in your mouth for quite a while after you've applied it.
MY EXPERIENCES
Having inspected the ulcers at quite close length, I could see that they weren't particularly large but they were painful enough for me to want to seek treatment. You can apply the gel on a three-hourly basis but I usually find that one application is enough to take most of the discomfort away and that I mostly don't feel the need to reapply as soon as I can, which is testament to the fact that it does the job. Generally speaking, it works quicker on the ulcers on the inside of my mouth and two or three applications can clear these up altogether (sometimes it takes more like 3-5 applications though). The ulcers on my tongue will often need more frequent applications in the early days but within a day or two, I'm in a much more comfortable position and I'd say that 5-7 applications will do the trick for those. The ulcers on the inside of my lip don't always clear up at all with this gel and I sometimes have to resort to using a dab of TCP overnight instead. All in all, it's helped my discomfort no end now that I've not been getting such big ulcers and I'd thoroughly recommend it for relatively small ulcers that are driving you mad.
Summary: No good for large ulcers in my experience but much more effective on smaller ones.
