Advantages: Helps to soothe a sore or tickly throat.
Disadvantages: Not so effective with a bad cough
I have sampled many cough mixtures/linctuses over the years and also tried them out on my husband and my four children. I honestly feel that most don't have that much effect. I do feel that to 'break up' a chesty cough Benylin is worth using and does give some good results and a few others seem quite good too (Covonia amongst these) but most have, in my experience, only a little efficacy. But I find with most coughs that I suffer from (fortunately only occasionally) are most troublesome at night.
I sometimes need a linctus to help to soothe my throat before getting off to sleep and for those annoying times when I'm woken with that stubborn irritating tickle that just won't go away. I find once it starts no amount of sipping at a drink relieves it; the only thing that seems to have any effect is medicine.
I have also found with my children (especially when younger) that most medicines didn't do much to alleviate a cough but soothing linctus did help them, mainly in being able to sleep a little better.
I think, for the sake of soothing a tickle, most cough mixtures will help to temporarily alleviate symptoms, but I have found that the best seem to be preparations containing the three ingredients of glycerine, lemon and honey. All of these ingredients are known to soothe sore throats and if the throat is soothed then the ticklish sensation is calmed, albeit temporarily.
This medicine is also useful, in my opinion, for when the worst of the cold or cough is over but there is still some irritation left, at times. This often seems to be at night or when trying to relax.
As I find that most medicines which are simply used to soothe sore throats and perhaps unblock the sinuses a little, seem to work more due to the ingredients used in their content than the brand, then to me it makes sense to use cheaper remedies. I don't mind which brand I use if it contains glycerine, honey and lemon as I find these preparations are the best for my personal use. Also, I find that medicines containing these ingredients don't make me sleepy as is the case with Benylin, for example. Of course, if I am suffering badly with a cough I'll put up with the side effects but normally I all I need is a soother.
The medicine I have been using most recently is a Boots own preparation which I think is a well tried and tested brand and I have bought a few of these. In my opinion this works just as well as more expensive branded medicines do but at a reasonable price. As I don't have a cold at the moment just the ticklish irritating cough remaining from one, I don't need to take this during the day but will take perhaps one teaspoonful before retiring and if I wake with a cough then another one. This does the trick for me.
I'm not exactly sure how much I paid when I bought this but it was no more than £1.60 to £1.70 for a bottle sized at 200ml. I consider this to be a very good price.
The medicine comes in simple packaging; this being a glass bottle and it has a screw on lid. This is fine for me (not having young children in the house) but I understand that in Boots the chemist one can request a child proof lid if required.
Adults= two 5ml (teaspoon) to be taken up to four times per day
Children (five to eleven years) =one 5ml (spoonful) to be taken up to four times per day
Children (one to four) = one 2.5 ml (spoonful) to be taken up to four times per day.
I don't really like the taste that much as find it sweet but I like the fact that the lemon can be tasted as can the honey and all I think that these combined with the glycerine does make it slip down the throat in a soothing manner.
I would say that the taste compares favourably to many other cough medicines. My children when young found this nicer to consume than most other cough medicines.
This medicine when used to soothe a sore throat or tickly cough works well and I would recommend it. It's very good for the price. However, if I had a severe cough/cold then I wouldn't expect it to do too much and would be more inclined to use a stronger cough/cold remedy. I find it best used for its soothing properties.
Summary: Reasonably priced
