Quite a few years ago I used to suffer with cystitis quite often. It used to drive me to despair, it was so uncomfortable it really effected me on a daily basis. For those that don't know cystitis is the inflammation of the bladder and it makes you want to go to the toilet more often and it can making going to the toilet uncomfortable and possibly painful which lets face it, that's not nice!
The main reasons why cystitis occurs is smoking, vigorous sex, not drinking enough, hormonal changes and scented toiletries such as soaps, shower gels etc. My reason was not drinking enough as well as coming on when I was stressed. Apart from the age old remedy of drinking cranberry juice, I wanted something else as constantly drinking cranberry juice was making me need the toilet even more!
Whilst in my local pharmacy I was recommended to cry Canesten Oasis. At that point I would have tried everything! Canesten is a well known name and more commonly known for its thrush products. Canesten Oasis are little sachets of cranberry flavoured powder which contain sodium citrate. They help to relive the symptoms of cystitis within a shorter space of time.
Canesten Oasis comes in a small cardboard box featuring the Canesten logo together with an image of water having just had something drop into it, to give the ripple effect. On the back of the box there is the information about the product as well as dosage instructions as well as who should not take the sachets. Inside the box there is a more detailed leaflet about the product should you need a little more info.
In each box you get 6 sachets as it gives you a 2 day course. The sachets themselves are about the same size of a business card and have a similar theme as to the packaging. To use a sachet you simply need to tear the top off and pour into a glass of water and then simply drink. The powder itself is fine and has a very pale pink colour to it and once dissolved you do find that some of it just sinks to the bottom of your glass so you do need to keep stirring it.
Unfortunately like most medicines it doesn't taste wonderful and certainly has that medicine taste - it reminded me somewhat of chewing on a paracetemol which is certainly not pleasant. Although when you do drink it it does have a gentle fruity smell to it so if you concentrate on that then it won't be too bad! To get the best of the product you are advised to take 3 sachets a day and should the symptoms not improve after the 2 day course then you will need to go to the doctor.
Canesten advise that you should start to feel a little relief within a few hours and I can fortunately say that I felt relief within around an hour! It certainly makes drinking something tasting so vile definitely worth it. Despite feeling better after the first day I did ensure I completed the course just in case. You could of course disguise the powder in a glass of fruit squash should you really hate the taste but if you just drink it quickly then you shouldn't even notice it!
Overall, Canesten Oasis has helped me many times and most recently I had cystitis a few months ago due to being very stressed and not drinking enough during the day and instead of feeling low about it I headed to my stash of sachets and within a few hours I was feeling better. The sachets together with pints of water really does make a difference, especially to me anyway. So they are not the best tasting product on the market but for a few seconds drinking a glass of water it takes so much discomfort away. I couldn't recommend them highly enough!

When I was at university I went through a stage of frequently having cystitis. A painful and horrible inflammation of the bladder which causes a stinging sensation when urinating and also only allowing you to pee in small amounts whilst making it feel like you always need to go.
Since then I haven't had it since, until now. Thankfully my symptoms this time round are minor and I don't have any pain, however being a Bank Holiday there are very few pharmacies open and definitely no GP's.
Google is your friend and Google recommended antibiotics (not helpful when the GP is shut). So a trip to Tesco where the pharmacy was open was my first port of call for the day.
The pharmacist explained that all options were available on the normal shelves in store and provided me with a box of Canesten Oasis. 6 Sachets of Cranberry flavoured sodium citrate solution which you dissolve in cold water, 3 times and day for 2 days. She also said that if this solves the problems brilliant, if not a trip to the GP for antibiotics is in order. You must complete the course if you want the medication to work correctly.
Canesten claim that nothing you can buy over the counter is more effective than this product and it is a problem that most women will experience at least once in their lifetime.
Now this product is usually approximately £4 but it was half price in Tesco which made it cheaper than the other brands available in store. Having said this, online prices seem to be nearer the £5 mark which is extortionate and I would suggest shopping around or choosing a different cheaper brand.
I recall quite well how disgusting this solution is. In smells lovely, very fruity and drinkable, but in reality it's nasty, nasty stuff.
The sodium citrate is an alkali solution which is effective in neutralising highly acidic urine (the cause of the pain) and making going to the toilet much easier. The sachets do not disolve 100% in the water without a good stir so make sure that all the solution is gone from the bottom of the glass. It is also worth noting that this solution is still and not carbonated unlike some stir in sachets.
In addition to the sachets it is also recommended that you drink a lot of water and/or cranberry juice to flush through the infection. I can't stand cranberry juice so really this infection is a double whammy for me, not only is it uncomfortable but all of the solutions taste disgusting and make me feel sick, but is meant to contain substances which prevent bacteria in the bladder.
Does it work? Well yes quite quickly to be honest. Within an hour the symptoms are better, but you also have to help yourself.
Coffee, alcohol, tea and acidic fruit juices are a no go when being treated as they all have a high acid content which will not assist the medication in working. It is also important not to use highly perfumed soaps or bubble baths as this can also counteract against the medication.
Do drink lots of water and/or cranberry juice, do always pass water before and after sex, do wipe front to back to prevent the spread of bacteria and always pass water when required rather than holding on.
My main disappointment with this product is the name. Oasis implies a nice, tranquil surrounding not a nasty drink to resolve a painful infection. But other than that the product works and aside of the price it is definitely worth buying if you're suffering.
Cystitis, in case you've never had it, is horrendous. You have a constant urgency to pee, and when you do it comes out in a mere tiny trickle and stings like hell because the infection has made your urine highly acidic. As well as this, it's not unusual to have excruciating groin pain and feel generally feverish and unwell. Your urine, when it does come out, will often be dark and cloudy, and may contain streaks of blood. Cystitis is a urinary tract infection, an infection of the bladder that can also involve the urethra. It is often, but not always, caused by bacteria. Bacteria gets in there in many different ways, such as wiping yourself from back to front rather than vice versa when you've been to the loo, or from sex. It can even be brought on by wearing tampons or constricting underwear which provides the warm, moist atmosphere so beloved of bacteria and fungi. One way to treat cystitis is with an over-the-counter remedy from Canesten (they of thrush cream fame), called Oasis. Oasis is a box of 6 sachets that you mix with water. The active ingredient is sodium citrate, which is very alkali and works to neutralize your urine and thus bring down the acid-caused inflammation of your bladder wall. And because your urine is alkali, it won't feel like it's lacerating your labia when you pee. Oasis sachets certainly do work, and you can feel relief just half an hour after the first one. By the time you've taken all six, your cystitis might well be gone altogether. At over £4 for 6 sachets they're not cheap, but if they get rid of your cystitis they're worth it, right? Well no. You can alternatively go to the chemist and ask the pharmacist for a bottle of pot cit. It contains the same active ingredient as Oasis but it comes in liquid form. Like Oasis, you mix it with water. Like Oasis, you may start to feel relief almost immediately. The only difference a
s far as I can ascertain is the price. For not much over a quid, you get 200 ml of pot cit. You take 5 or 10 ml three times a day mixed with plenty of water. So even using the highest dose, you get 20 doses of pot cit for about £1.20. You get 6 doses of Oasis - THE SAME THING - for over £4. The rip-off prices of brand name medicines is one of my big bug-bears. I always ask the pharmacist if there is an equal generic brand for anything I buy in the chemists, and 8 times out of 10 there is, and always much, much cheaper. For example, the same applies to vitamin tablets (where you can regularly save two thirds!) and yellow Migraleve tablets (which are just paracetamol and codeine) to name but two. So if you've been treating your cystitis with Oasis I urge you to save your money and ask the chemist for pot cit instead. You'll be glad you did. To prevent further attacks: Wipe from front to back Don't wear constricting underwear or sweaty tights Don't eat too much spicy food Pee straight after sex Never hang on to a full bladder Warning: Do not self-treat cystitis with either of the above mentioned in the following circumstances: You are under 16 You are male You have very bad groin or back pain You have kidney or heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes You are pregnant or breastfeeding There is blood in your urine It is your first ever attack Otherwise, buy pot cit and pee painlessly without being penniless. (If you think this sounds too good to be true, ask your pharmacist to have your mind put at rest).
