Advantages: seems to work
Disadvantages: pricey,awkward to use
We had this reccommended to us by a friend who said that it was very expensive but she would have paid £100 a bottle as it was a miracle cure. With my first son he had never had colic but this time around my 2nd son was showing all the classic signs of colic, the screaching, pulling the knees up etc so i thought right lets give this stuff a go as it was heart breaking watching him wriggling around like he was.....
Colief has an enzyme in it that is naturally in the body but due to babies not having a mature digestive system until at least 3 months they have the problems digesting the lactose therefore causing the babies to suffer from colic.
Off to Boots i went and purchased some, you can get it straight from the shop floor no specialist queuing at the pharmacy. It is priced at £9.99 for a 7ml bottle which might not seem like alot but as depending how you make up your bottles you need a maximum of 4 droplets a time it will last a while.
I decided there was no time like the present to try and gave it a go well i was squeezing this bottle and nothing so got hubby to have a go and yet again squeezing and nothing ??? At this point i was really annoyed thinking i had paid £10 and got a duff one.So with one final squeeze of the bottle out came a load directly into the bottle i had made up !! woops....so that bottle had to be discarded right away as i had no clue just how much had gone in there....so still not happy !! So dont squeeze the bottle too hard or else u might lose half of it ....
The droplets can be put in the bottles in a few ways....If you make up your babies feeds in advance you need to add 2 drops to the warm milk then keep in the fridge for 4 hours. If you make them up to use right away then you need to add 4 drops to milk that is warm (not hot) and give the bottle a shake ....also you have to give it 30 mins to start working. You can also use it when breastfeeding by expressing some milk then adding 4 drops of colief again but feed it to your baby froma sterilised spoon.
We put the droplets in the next bottle and sat back to see how he was....well the same so i thought it must take some time to kick in ill keep adding it to his bottles as the instructions said and wait a day see if he is any better.Next day still the same....well until that evening....doing my usual check to see if my little one was hungry by giving him my little finger to nibble on and this time he clamped down on my finger and gave what i can describe as a almighty push he pooped !! after this he looked sooo relaxed it was unreal. It turns out that what we thought had been colic was actually constipation!!! wether the colief had anything to do with this i will never know ......He has not been the same again since and ive not used it since.
So another piece of advice is dont rush out and buy it explore other possibilties as this is a very expensive one.
I would say after speaking with friends that it does work well but obviously its not for everyone.I would go down other avenues first but i think at the end of the day you do whatever you have to do to help your baby no matter what the cost is.....
Summary: helpful for poor colicy babies & their parents
