Advantages: Highly effective

Disadvantages: Thick and greasy, a bit pricey but well worth it

I have suffered with eczema since childhood and I have found it very difficult over the years to find an effective moisturiser to alleviate my often very dry, chapped, sore and itchy skin. However, since being prescribed Diprobase a couple of years ago I have seen great improvements in the feel and condition of my skin. Dipbrobase is an emollient which helps keep the skin hydrated by locking in moisture.

It contains cholorocerserol, cetomacrogol, cetostearyl alcohol, liquid paraffin, white soft paraffin, phosphoric acid, sodium dihydrogen phosphate and purified water. There are surprisingly very few ingredients in this product and none of which irritate my skin, which is very rare. However, there is a warning on the label of the 500g pump dispenser which says you might experience allergic reaction to any of the ingredients. In my experience it is a case of try it and see.

The consistency and smell of diprobase is not great however, it is quickly absorbed into dry skin, and the oily, greasy consistency and smell soon wear off. I have tried a similar, slightly lighter consistency sister product called Doublebase which contains similar active ingredients of liquid paraffin etc. however; this was in my opinion not as effective. Although it was lighter, and easier to use and wear, I found myself applying it all day long to achieve the same results as diprobase.

Diprobase is available to buy in two sizes. There is a 500g pump dispenser and a 50g tube. Unfortunately, if you do not have a prescription for this item it is rather expensive. I think it's around £12.00 for the dispenser! It is surprising just how quickly you can use up the dispenser if you are applying this product twice daily. For me, this usually takes about 6 weeks.

In my experience I would not advise using this product at the same time as any other moisturisers, sun creams, bath emollient etc. as I have suffered allergic reactions and severe flare ups as a result. I have experienced this using a combination of diprobase and either E45 suncream, hydrocortisone cream and oilatum bath emollient. However, I have not had any problems using aqueous cream and Diprobase together. I think it very much depends on the severity and sensitivity of your skin.

In conclusion I would thoroughly recommend this product for eczema sufferers.

Summary: A great everyday moisturiser
