Advantages: really does work
Disadvantages: strange orangey taste
Getting used to new parenthood is a steep learning curve, especially if you have had very little experience of even holding babies. Me and my other half bless us didn’t think too much about wind until my nan pointed out that wind may be making Scarlett cry a lot. Our community midwife recommended infacol to try and relieve her crying fits.
Infacol, as the name suggests helps to relieve the symptoms of infant colic. The exact cause of colic has yet to be clearly defined, however wind is thought to play a big part in it. It usually resolves itself around 3 months, but that could well be a very long three moths!
Infacol is suitable for use from birth onwards. It can be used as frequently as you wish and should be given to your baby before their feed. It comes in a small container with a dropper, which is really handy as this means you can squeeze the liquid into your baby’s mouth. Goodness knows how we would have got it in there without a dropper!
Infacol contains simethicone, saccharin sodium, hydroxpropyl methyl cellulose, orange flavour, methyl paraben, propyl paraben and purified water. We felt a little bit reluctant to give Scarlett something with so many chemicals, but hey if it dealt with her wind!
Scarlett was not to impressed with her first shot of infacol. Her little horror stricken face was a picture and bad parents that we are we couldn’t help laughing. It has a very strong synthetic orange smell and I suppose that to a baby whose only used to milk this orangey taste would come as a bit of a shock.
Despite her dislike of the taste (and the taste didn’t really grow on her) it did work. It didn’t happen straight away, but after about twelve hours it did make her do some impressive burps. We last used infacol when Scarlett was six weeks old. These days wind isn’t as bothersome to her and without too much winding she manages some scary old man burps.
Infacol is available from supermarkets and pharmacies for £3.39 for a 50ml bottle. Lets just hope it hasn’t given Scarlett an irrational fear of oranges!
