Advantages: helps eliminate wind, easy to apply

Disadvantages: not a complete solution to the problem

As a relatively new mum, one of the things I like to see least is my baby suffering from wind of any sort. It's the one thing I find hardest to help him with - a nappy can be changed, or a hungry stomach given milk. Spending time winding him and comforting him just doesn't always quite cut it and my midwife had previously recommended that I try this product to help, so I decided to give it a try.

WHAT IS IT

Infacol is a medicine for babies, which is suitable from birth, to relieve wind, infant colic and griping pain. Although my baby is breast fed, he still manages to take in a lot of air whilst feeding, giving him his wind problem. Obviously, a lot of the time this is treatable by the traditional winding method of patting or rubbing the back but I have a bottle of Infacol in the house for use when his wind problem has been particularly bad lately.

Infacol contains simeticone which 'helps the little trapped gas bubbles join into bigger bubbles which your baby can easily bring up as wind. - helping to relieve the pain'. It comes in the form of a liquid medicine, which is orange flavoured. The medicine is sugar, alcohol and colourant free and is a thick white gloopy liquid, which smells of the orange flavouring.

HOW TO USE

The Infacol comes in a grey plastic bottle with a rubber 'dropper' for an applicator. To give this to your baby, you need to compress the rubber bulb on the dropper to draw the liquid into the tube and then insert the dropper into your baby's mouth and release the liquid. This must be given to baby before each feed to take effect. One dropper full is 0.5ml, but for really bad cases, you can use two droppers full (1ml).

MY EXPERIENCE

I have found the medicine relatively easy to administer to my baby. The dropper does however leak slightly - maybe one or two drops - and this can result in it being a little messy around baby's mouth. He does take the dropper into his mouth without too much problem - it is a decent size - so it is easy to apply as directed to the back of his tongue. The taste seems to be ok, he is a little unsure of it and pulls a few faces (but then his diet does currently consist of milk, milk and more milk so any new taste would be odd!) but he doesn't seem to react too adversely to this.

So, the big question is does it work? Well, I wouldn't say that all wind is completely eliminated by giving the baby one dropper of this medicine. However, I do find that the wind is a lot easier to bring up using normal winding techniques when baby has been given this before a feed. My baby also appears to be less in pain, with less griping motions when I have used this.

The bottle says that it contains enough for 100 doses, but I would struggle to believe that this is correct as I have used this only around 20-30 times and am about halfway through the bottle. Also, once open this medicine needs to be used within 28 days. Priced at around £3.39 for a bottle of 50ml, this is quite an expensive medicine but it offers me, as a mother, priceless reassurance that I am doing all I can to relieve my baby of any potential pain or discomfort.

I have found that the medicine offers improvement to the condition when given over a number of days, rather that specifically offering any instant relief. I would recommend this product to any mum with a windy baby as it does offer some relief and comfort - although do not expect it to eliminate the problem completely. Four stars.

Summary: Helpful medicine to have in the house for baby
