Advantages: Unblocks little noses quickly

Disadvantages: None

My poor little boy developed his first ever cold when he was 10 weeks old. If you have children you will know that there is nothing worse than your poor little baby being poorly and not being able to take it away from them.

I was quite lucky with Rhys as he was a little soldier, he was a little bit under the weather for a couple of days but then he seemed to perk up. The only thing he then had left was a bunged up nose. This only really affected Rhys when he was feeding, as a small baby does not know to breathe through their mouth in between gulps of milk, so Rhys just tended to stop breathing and then panic!!!

I decided to go the chemist and ask their advise about which product will be best to use to unblock my boy's nose. The chemist advised me to use Karvol decongestant drops. A 12ml bottle cost £2.50 but as you only use a few drops at a time I figure it will last me a fair while.

The bottle comes in a green box with the Karvol logo on the front, the bottle itself is brown glass with a label on the front with the Karvol logo on. It has a white screw on lid and once the lid is opened it has a plastic dropper top on, this allows the Karvol to drip out, rather than pour all over!!

The first thing that greets you when you open the bottle is the gorgeous smell of the Karvol, it is a very hard smell to describe but it is a typical decongestant smell, like Vicks vapour rub, I think it smells of eucalyptus oil. It is definitely strong and you can instantly feel it getting to work on your nostrils!!

These drops cannot be used for babies under 3 months old, for babies over 3 months it directs you to put 6 drops on a hankie secured near to, but out of reach of the baby. I simply put 6 drops on a tissue and hang it on his mobile that is over his head. 6 drops is definitely enough to give out a good vapor and I found that the smell soon filled his nursery but it wasn't too overpowering.

You can also use Karvol for older children and adults, the instructions for this age group is to put 6 drops onto bedding, hankie, tissue or into a pint of water and that you should then inhale the vapour. You should not put the drops directly into the mouth, however I would like to think that no-one would be daft enough to do this, but you never know!

I am pleased to say that these drops did unblock Rhys' nose overnight, he did tend to keep getting bunged up after so I did use them for a few nights but the drops did definitely help after just one use. Karvol is an item I will be keeping in my medicine cabinet as you never know when a cold is going to strike!!

Summary: A great way to ease a blocked nose.

I still love these on my pillow when I've got a cold!
