Karvol Family Decongestant Drops
Advantages: Easy to use, smells comforting!
As a child, whenever I suffered from a blocked nose, a cold, or any form of sinus-related problems, out would come the trusty tub of Vicks Vapour rub, which would either be put on a cotton hanky for me to keep with me, or smeared onto my chest at bedtime. Alternatively, I would be made to hold my head over a bowl of boiling water, into which Mum had put a few menthol crystals, with a towel over the top to keep the steam in.......**remember, don't put too many in, because it blows your head off!!**
Both these methods worked fantastically well, and there is nothing wrong with either (well, apart from having your head blown off with too much menthol in the hot water!).
However, over the past few years, I have moved away from having the trusty reliable Vicks in the cupboard for such moments, and now have a bottle of Karvol decongestant drops on the go instead.
Karvol is available in small bottles which hold a total of 12mls of liquid, with a dropper style top, or in individual capsule form. I always buy the bottle because it works out much cheaper, but both work equally well, and are the same basic product as far as I am aware. There is also a vapour rub, and a vapouriser (but I have not tried either of these to compare).
Karvol is a decongestant that is suitable for all the family, except for babies under 3 months old. It is ideal for helping settle children with snuffly noses, for putting on a hanky to help with blocked noses, and for generally aiding restful sleep, in my experience.
**What does it contain?**
Karvol contains natural ingredients such as levomenthal, thymol and pine oil - all widely used in decongestant medicines. It also contains chlorbutol, which has antibacterial and antifungal properties, and terpineal which is an naturally occuring alcohol (and will therefore help in preserving the other ingredients for long periods of time).
**How does it work?**
Quite simply, the vapours released help to unblock stuffy noses, and therefore help you to feel more comfortable both during the day, and when you are sleeping. In addition, the pleasant scent of Karvol is very comforting, and on its own may help you drift off to sleep as you relax.
**How to use it**
Remember - this is not suitable for use with babies under 3 months old.
For all others, you can put six drops of Karvol on a clean hanky.
For babies and very young children, this can be placed near to them, but out of reach - for example, it could be tied onto a cot side, or draped onto a pillow next to the bed.
For older children and adults, the vapours can be inhaled from the hanky. Alternatively a few drops could be put onto your bedding - towards the top of the duvet cover works well, I find, with children, whereas I like to have mine actually on my pillow.
Cotton hankies seem to be a thing of the past, but fear not - Karvol works just as well with paper tissues.
**Karvol should NOT be placed directly on the skin**
Remember the menthol *blow your head off* method with the bowl of hot water? Well, you can put your six drops of Karvol in a pint of hot water, and inhale the vapours that way - much less harsh than the pure menthol of old, and just as effective......and gives you a free facial steam in the process of course!
I really do think that no first aid cupboard should be without Karvol - as I mentioned above, I think it does more than just help stuffy noses.....for me it aids restful sleep in general, presumably by the fact that it is helping me to breathe just that little bit easier.
And as for value for money - well, it is a long time since I bought Vicks, and I am sure Karvol is probably a bit more expensive, but at about £3 for a bottle, and easily available in chemists and supermarkets, I don't think you will feel hard done by. Each bottle has a long shelf life too, so no need to throw any away after just a few weeks.

Summary: A wonderful comforting smell that you will want to return to!
