Advantages: Life saving product and long use by date will keep your bowels in good working order
Disadvantages: None that come to mind
I'd never heard of this product, until of course, I was in dire need of some relief. Typically, when life was on an even keel I was as regular as clockwork - the morning was the time I emptied my bowels and felt lighter and able to do my day to day things. During this period, however, things changed. Lifestyle changes put my eating patterns in disarray and I was visiting the toilet once a week, if that - which left me feeling like I was clogged up and thus less reluctant to eat - which in itself would have caused other complications. I'd had enough! Off to see the doc again!
Within seconds of describing my symptoms the doctor ran off a prescription of MovicoI sachets. He told me to take these for 2 weeks and if movement hadn't improved, I was to go back. Fingers crossed! I was advised to take one or two of these sachets a day - dependent upon my needs. Collecting them from the pharmacy made me look twice - I was given 2 large boxes full to the brim, with a total of 60 sachets! I tried to walk away discreetly with prying eyes boring a hole through my bag. I got to the safety of my flat and immediately emptied the contents of one sachet into a glass. The instructions suggested I use 125ml or ¼ pint of water and stir the contents. I did so, and looked at the result - it gave me the impression that it would erupt out the same way it went in. I tried tasting it, thinking "how bad can it be???" The answer being a strange chemical taste, that remained with me for the next few hours, thus making it nigh on impossible to eat anything. I read the notes some more, and realised that you can add some squash to make it go down and stay down. I added some orange squash and gulped the liquid down - I did find getting it down in one helped, as the after taste was something to get accustomed to.
At the time when I first used Movicol I had been constipated for 2 weeks and so I had alot to release. Once i took the first sachet, within hours I felt the effects - although in a minor way. I had a small movement, which made me feel some sense of relief. In the first instance, I used it twice, once in the morning and once at night. Like Senna containing medication, I personally felt that this really came into effect in the night. In the morning, I felt pretty much back to my normal self - having felt as though I'd delivered a being straight into the bog hole! I guess it's dependent on what you've eaten and what your tolerance levels are in gerenal as to how well this works for you. I did carry on using it, once a day, just to ensure regularity, then I eased off and rarely use them now.
Movicol comes in sachets of 13.8g and is for oral consumption only - had a mental image of someone trying to snort it - don't reckon it would have the same effect! This laxative is for use by adolescents, adults and the elderly and not recommended for kids below the age of 12. The idea behind this medication is for you to have a comfortable bowel movement. This product can also be used for people suffering from faecal impaction (very bad constipation).
Each sachet contains 13.125g Macrogol, 0.1785g sodium bicarbonate,0.3507g sodium chloride, and 0.0466g of potassium chloride. There is also a hint of lime/lemon flavour - not that i've ever attempted to take it without drowning it in squash! Macrogel, being the main ingredient, is a passive substance that is not absorbed into the body. It somehow makes the water taken with the sachet be retained in the bowel and therefore causes the much needed movement and makes stools easier to pass. The other active ingredients are there to make sure the body does not run low on these essentials (sodium and potassium) when the bowels are being flushed out.
This can be taken thrice daily, but for me, once in the morning gave me the kick I needed. It can be taken with or without food, and at any time. An important note to take, is that if you are taking Movicol because of symptoms of Parkinsons disease or multiple sclerosis, you may need to take this for more than 3 weeks. As usual though, a doctor's advice is recommended. Probably an obvious side effect, if you take more than you should, is the inevitable diarrhoea, in which case you should lower your dose and see your doctor, if this persists. Other side effects include breathlessness, feeling weak, excessive thirst, headaches, puffy ankles and stomach aches. In all these cases it is advised that if the symptoms persist for more than 2/3 days a trip to the doc/pharmacist is called for.
In terms of storage, it should be kept away from kids at room temperature (not exceeding 25°C. In the even that you dissolve the sachet and are unable to drink it, it can be stored, covered in the fridge for up to 6 hours. The use by date on mine goes well into 2011, so I have kept the remaining box for those emergency situations!
Movicol worked for me and was truly what I needed to kick start my system. It did cost me £7.20 on prescription but, like I said, it has a long use by date and so was definitely worth spending the money.
