Movicol Powder Sachets
Advantages: haven't found any yet
Disadvantages: Nasty taste, slow to work, can cause more problems
My son has been prescribed Movicol daily for a year now & his condition is still no better. His case is a little worse than your everyday costipation in most cases as he becomes impacted heavily. We know he has at least another few months on the treatment as the doctors are convinced that it is the best treatment, however we are not so sure.
He has the sachets every day, sometimes mixed with fruit juice but most of the time mixed with squash, it says water but they allow it in squash as even when he was admitted into hospital for treatment they were allowing him to drink it in squash, as he doesnt like the taste. Its supposed to be origional with no taste, but he knows when i have put it in,even if he hasnt seen me, so its either taste or the texture that makes him know but he always moans.
He has been on many different doses, currently 4 per day, but can go up when struggling still. He has been on 12 a day in the past, which is higher than stated, but it was doctors orders, but didnt work as well as they had hoped.
When you think of laxatives you imagine fast relief, running to the toilet, not so, after a week of 12 sachets a day this was still not the case, he even had to have 20ml of senna added to help.
I know all cases are different,so they may not be like my son who is only 10 by the way, but recently my bed riden nan has had to have this &once again she does not like the taste either, so there has to be something not nice about it, but the doctors are happy to sit there and say that its got no taste, maybe they should try it & see what they think.
Were worried that my son being on it too long is going to make things worse as long term use can cause bowels to become reliany on the medicine, which makes it lazy & stop working properly, so what they use to solve a problem, then becomes the cause of other problems.
All in all, its not what you wxpect from a laxative, doesnt taste nice & can make problems worse. Im sure there must be some more effective laxatives out there, after all we've all joked about slipping laxatives into someones drinks before now, not that we have, but its one of those funny toughts of seeing them dashing to the toilet, well this wouldnt work for that.
Summary: think there must be better alternatives around
