Advantages: It works!
Disadvantages: Green syrup is yuk!
I'm a man, so never get colds, it's always flu! Thankfully, Night Nurse treats colds, flu (and manflu!). Night Nurse comes in capsule form, and as a disgusting looking green syrup (no prizes for guessing which type I prefer!).
Night Nurse is designed to treat the symptoms of colds and flu. It contains Paracetamol, promethazine hydrochloride, and dextromethorphan hydro bromide as the active ingredients.
A side effect of one of the ingredients is to cause drowsiness. This is actually a benefit for a medicine designed to be taken at night, it helps you get to sleep (not always easy with a blocked nose, cough and sore throat).
The syrup also contains a significant amount of alcohol, so it's a good idea to avoid driving if taking this (the fact that it causes drowsiness also means that driving is not a good idea, and it might be possible for you to be 'over the limit' without having touched a drop. Try explaining it to the police though!). The instructions do state that driving is not advised when taking this medication.
Now, I HATE being ill, am a very poor patient, and have little patience when I'm sick (nightmare to live with!), so I always look for the best possible treatments for ailments. I also firmly believe in dosing myself with pharmaceuticals to get better and Night Nurse is the best thing I've found for treating a cold or flu. I've tried Beechams Flu plus for example (I hate their cheesy "sorts the men from the boys" adverts, by the way!) and found them nowhere near as good. Lemsip doesn't work for me, might as well drink lemonade.
Night Nurse, on the other hand is brilliant at reducing the main symptoms of a cold or flu; drying a runny nose, soothing a cough, and reducing a fever. The one symptom it's not great at relieving is the sore throat (I usually take Dequacaine for that). I find that when taking Night Nurse, I feel my symptoms easing within half an hour.
Each dose of Night Nurse contains a significant amount of Paracetamol (1000mg). It's important to never overdose yourself with Paracetamol so, if you're taking any other medicines (like I do) it's wise to check the label for Paracetamol content.
Like (nearly) all medicines, Night Nurse's leaflet contains a scary list of side effects and details of who can and cannot take it. It is always advisable to read the leaflet when you take a medicine for the first time, then try it and see if you have any ill effects. The leaflet reassuringly says that most people will not have any problems (I don't).
In summary then, I believe that Night Nurse is the number one treatment for colds and flu. I always keep it in the house ready for when the next nasty virus invades my home. Night Nurse costs about £3.00 for a pack of 10 capsules. For making me feel better when ill, I feel this is good value for money. Recommended.
Summary: The best cold and flu treatment
