Advantages: Works for me!
Disadvantages: Tastes nasty, gave bf bad reaction
Just after christmas we were all struck down as a family by a rather nasty bout of the flu. Typically I suffered the brunt of it, while OH and little monster luckily seemed to get well pretty quickly.
I had a nasty cough which was keeping me awake, and sick of taking the usual suspects such as lemsip and sudafed decongestants, I reluctantly bought a bottle of night nurse liquid. I say reluctantly, because I know the active ingredient in night nurse which helps you sleep are antihistamenes, and these have a tendency to leave me feeling a little hungover the next day.
So, I took myself off to bed and glugged the 20ml dose recommended. It doesn't look appealing, it's a green liquid. It doesn't taste pleasant either, but to be honest when you're that ill and blocked up, you can't taste much properly anyway. Night nurse works effectively for me, in that it makes me sleep and I stopped waking myself up coughing. It contains dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant. The paracetamol in it relieved my headache (which was probably made worse by all the coughing I'd been doing,) and the antihistamenes also clear the stuffy nose. My only personal gripe with the product is, as I say the day after I am left feeling groggy and not very with it.
The product from another perspective... (LOL)
My partner also decided to take some the next night, although to be fair he wasn't nearly as ill as I was at this point. He definitely went to sleep, but spent the next couple of hours tossing and turning, and practically dancing an irish jig in the bed. Another unfortunate affect of antihistamenes is they can make SOME people hyperactive rather than sleepy. He woke up and went to try and sleep on the sofa, but didn't feel good at all. He compared it to taking an 'illegal substance' which I won't mention on this board.
Needless to say, I would have no problem with taking night nurse again next time I am feeling poorly, but boyfriend wouldn't touch the stuff. I expect his reaction is an unusual one and all medicines come with side effects. Night nurse is to be taken just before going to bed, and is not for children under 12. It comes in a 160ml bottle and costs around £4.50 from chemists or supermarkets.
Summary: Works well, but be warned of side effects

- 25/04/09 It definitely works to help your cold but I cannot bear the "hangover" you get the next day either. I tend to prefer Day Nurse and in capsule form - both the Day and Night Nurse syrups taste vile - LOL! Great review. |
