Advantages: They really work, heat, easy
Disadvantages: None
Pain relief without the medicine.
I recently stumbled upon a great pain relief product without the use of harsh medicines and chemicals. They are the new heat patches from Nurofen, especially designed for back pain.
Nurofen Back Pain can be described as a single use heat patch which soothes your pain by getting deep into the muscle with the relaxing heat. It says on the packet that they are for back pain but you can use them on any muscle pain really, especially in the neck or shoulder too.
They are very simple to use. They basically to me look like a sanitary pad but a bit bigger and not as thick. They have an adhesive on one side that enables them to stick to your back and stay in place. What's nice is that they do actually stay where you put them, meaning you can apply these right to the source of your pain and know that they will keep on giving pain relief. The adhesive is said to be low irritancy and I didn't have a problem with it once I had peeled it off my skin. The pad actually came away really neatly and left no mess either like bandages tend to do. They have a flexible hinged design apparently that allows them to move with your body. This I found to be true also. When I was wearing it I did not feel like I was ripping it or moving it by myself moving in anyway which was nice.
The pad warms up gradually and really does last for 8 hours. It has natural minerals in it that heat up when exposed to air, basically they activate when you open the sachet that they are stored in. I did find it quite amazing that all that time later it was still warm but it did definitely work. It says on the packet not to apply pressure on the pad once it is on the skin but I did press it a few times and found it warmed up a little bit more when I did that. It does feel a bit funny on your back at times, like you have a hot gel consistency on your back but the great thing is that it's odourless and discreet so you can wear it under clothes without anybody knowing you have it on.
According to the packet heat therapy helps treat the underlying cause of back and muscle pain in two ways:
1. By increasing blood flow to the area
2. By relaxing tight sore muscles.
According to doctors this helps you get active again and speeds up the recovery process. Now I only had a mild back pain, just a little niggle at the end of a long day but after wearing this I didn't have any more pain so it definitely worked for me. I think though if you have extreme back pain this probably won't do much good and may only alleviate the pain for a short while.
Two of these patches come in one pack and each pack is £3.21
