Advantages: Only sleeping tablets I've found to help me gently fall asleep

Disadvantages: Probably not strong enough if you're very stressed and having severe sleep difficulty

I often have difficulty sleeping. Sometimes it's because I wake up several times in the middle of the night and wake up feeling unfreshed like I hadn't slept. But most of the time I just can't get to sleep in the first place which is extremely frustrating. Going to bed once you feel tired enough, putting lavendar on your pillow, exercising during the day but not before, no caffine after 6pm, writting down your thoughts before bed...nothing seems to help. Having tried one or two other sleeping tablets, the herbal over the counter variety, I still couldn't find anything to help. I came across Nytol 16 caplets in Boots and decided to give them a try and they do actually help me catch some Zzzs.

Nytol is produced by GlaxoSmithKline so you know you're buying a quality product. These particular sleeping tablets aren't the herbal ones (these come both in a box and a small tub, I've tried these and found them to be ineffective). They come in a blue box and contain 16 'easy swallow caplets' and can be bought from Boots for £3.19. The tablets are white and powdery and I find they're small enough to swallow without any problems, however they can be broken in half if you're not keen on tablets.

Nytol claims to be a 'clinically proven night time sleep aid', though, as will all sleeping tablets, they shouldn't be used consistantly over a long period of time (ie. two weeks). Although I usually frequently have problems sleeping, I use these every now and again just to catch up and get a good nights sleep. Obviously if you're having major problems with your sleep and are unable to find the cause and something that helps then you should see your doctor.

These are similar to the once a night Nytol capsules, however each tablet is half the strength of the one single tablet. Therefore you should take 2 of these with water approximately 20 minutes before going to bed. It's best not to leave it too long otherwise the effects can ware off before you're totally settled for sleep. Incase you didn't guess already, Nytol have been kind enough to warn us that these 'may cause drowsiness'... you've been warned!

I think these have a somewhat calming effect on me when I take them and gives me just the right time frame to get into a pleasant nights sleep. I'd say they're a little expencive though as they'll only last you 8 days and they may not been strong enough if you're feeling very wound up or stressed out. I haven't noticed any side effects, no nightmares or anything like that. When I've woken up after taking Nytol I do feel like I've had a better rest too which is good. These should only be taken by those over 16 years, and it states that you should consult your doctor before taking these if you're pregnant, breast feeding or taking other medication, so do read the instructions first. I wouldn't say they're actually that strong though to be honest, which I'd say is a slight downside, because if you're wanting something to guarantee you sleep and knock you out you wont find it with these. Overall though I'd recommend you give these a go if you are wanting a temporary relief to sleep problems, I think they'll work differently for everybody so I can't say if they'd work for you but they just about do the trick for me :o)

Summary: Worth a try to see if they work for you
