Advantages: I slept well when I took them

Disadvantages: Would I have slept anyway?

It's like this you see - I lost my mom to dementia in April of this year, my husband (an IT contractor with his own company) is having difficulty finding another contract and I have started a part time job merchandising where my boss only seems to concentrate on the rare things that I do wrong!

Now, if this isn't a recipe for sleepless nights I don't know what is.

Some nights I can't get to sleep, some nights I go to sleep quickly and then wake up early only to lie awake and some nights I sleep better but have troubled dreams. This is something unusual for me as I have always managed to sleep well even when I do have troubles and worries.

I decided that I would see if there was anything non habit forming out in the market place that would help with my problem.

I ended up with Nytol Herbal Tablets which cost about £5 for a packet of 30 tablets. These are available without prescription from chemists and supermarkets.

The box to look out for is green with a white fluffy cloud and a crescent moon on the front and the word Nytol written in bog letters across the middle of the box.

The other information here on the front of the box tells us that these tablets contain 'a blend of herbs to soothe and so aid restful sleep'.

This is the sort of thing I wanted to try. I didn't fancy a tablet full of chemicals that might be addictive; I wanted to try an herbal remedy that hopefully would be better for my system.

Nytol Herbal Tablets contain hops, valerian and passion flower all of which are sedative and will induce calmness and restful sleep.

The way to take these tablets is to swallow two of them about an hour before bedtime.

You are of course advised to read the leaflet enclosed in the box before you take any of the tablets as you would with any medication.

The main thing to note is that you should not take these with alcohol as that will compound the effect of the tablet. To be fair I decided that this would not be a bad thing in my case so I did have a couple of tablets even though I had already consumed a standard glass of red wine during the evening.

When I took them I got an aftertaste a bit like that from yeast tablets in my mouth but it soon disappeared.

Did they work though?

Well I have to say that I don't know. Now I know that sounds silly but I had endured so many nights of bad or little sleep that I was exhausted and who is to say that I wouldn't have slept without the tablets?

I did however have a good night's sleep. I got up a couple of times to go to the loo but then being a diabetic I always do, so that was nothing unusual, but I did go back to sleep each time.

I haven't used the tablets every night, but I have used them a couple of times when I have got towards the end of my tether and I have had a good night's sleep each time I have used them. Having said that, as I said before, I don't know if I would have had a good night's sleep at that stage of exhaustion anyway.

Of course the other theory is that the tablets could work by power of suggestion - just the fact that I had taken them would actually make me sleep because I thought that was what would happen.

On balance I wouldn't say that I actually recommend these tablets but I wouldn't say that I don't recommend them either!

I guess you just have to try them for yourselves.......

Summary: A good night's sleep for whatever reason!

Yikes Kitschkitty - I'm a boss and hopefully I dont cause sleepless nights!
Anyway Good review & sorry to hear about the sleeplessness - not nice. I tend to find these chemist remedies dont work on me, but then I dont get drowsy with old fashioned antihistamines.

Poor you Susan! I thought you were enjoying your job. Sorry to hear you have an evil boss. In my experience - most bosses are! x
