Advantages: Makes you sleepy

Disadvantages: Smells

I had been suffering from an ear infection so, as anyone whos had one will be aware I was waking up 2 or 3 times a night. Been as the doctors are reluctant to provide ''real'' sleeping pills I resorted to Nytol. In the past I have tried Kalms and to be honest the first time I took them I was awake all night regardless, not sure if I blame the pills or insomnia.

As Nytol are suitable to take with antibiotics it was my next in line choice to try. Nytol Herbal brand come in a green packet which I'm guessing is to appear more *herbal* and good for you than they really are.

The pack I got was £5.05 for 30 tablets presented in blister packaging. The tablets are reasonably small yet are quite matt in texture so are harder to swallow than other similar brands which are sugar coated.

The first thing I noticed was the smell. The small browny pills to blame not only stank on their own but also made my hands smell so much I had to wash them. Its sort of like wet dog mixed with a really pungent sour smell of health food stores, I guess it smells herbal though.

The packet advises you take 2 tablets an hour before bed and I was suprised that these actually worked. Within about 20 minutes I was really drowsy and fell asleep reasonably fast. Although it didn't last, within about 3 hours I was awake again, although that could be due to my illness. Regardless I took these with the intention of a good nights sleep, not just to make me tired.

The advertised herbal ingredients in nytol are;

Hops - sedative and induce sleep.
Valerian - sedative, calming and induces sleep.
Passion Flower - sedative and induces sleep.

These tablets are not suitable for children under 12 or pregnant women.

Summary: Good if you can get over the stench
