Advantages: Will help you sleep
Disadvantages: Can become tolerant, some side effects possible, expensive
Nytol one a night contains 16 tablets and their active ingredient is 50mg of Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, this drug is primarily a antihisamine ie. used to treat allergic reactions to dust, pollen etc. but the side effect of it is to sedate and therefore it is used to treat temporary sleep disturbances.
You will need to ask at the chemist counter for these tablets as they regulate who they give them to. I am always asked by the assistant if they are for myself, if i have been using them for long. They will also ask if you suffer from any of the conditions I will list below.
They are very simple to use, you just swallow one tablet 20 minutes before bedtime. Swallow with water as they taste very unpleasant if they get stuck to the top of your mouth for example.
These tablets have always worked for me and i never experience any side effects but they can include:-
Blurred vision, dizziness grogginess, dry mouth and nervousness. It says that these will wear off after 8 hours so dont worry if you experience them!
If you take too many over a long period you will become tolerant to them and they will not work and you may feel you have to take more to be able to sleep at all. (I am not advocating exceeding the dosage).
Coming off them is difficult but i have found if you can break the tablet in half and take that it is easier than going "cold turkey".
The information leafet tells you not to take the product if you are:-
*Allgeric to Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride
*Suffering from Asthma, stomach problems, glaucoma, prostate trouble, difficulty in passing water
*Pregnant or breast feeding
*Suffering froma blood disease called Porphyria
*Suffering from liver disease, myasthenia gravis or epilepsy.
(i am writing these down as you dont get to read the leaflet in the chemist as it is behind the counter, and the assistance may not ask about all these conditions).
Also they can interact with other antihistamines, sedatives, anti anxiety drugs and anti depressants so ask your doctor before you take nytol if you use any of these drugs.
The product is only for people aged 16 and over.
You should not exceed the stated dose of course, or use alcohol or drive 8 hours after taking the tablets.
In fact in big letters it says MAY CAUSE DROWSINESS! It made me laugh!
Important point to note on the branded v generic products debate. Nytol costs 4,89 from boots. This is very expensive for what they are. There are many other sleep aids with different names (sleep aid 50mg etc) available which contain EXACTLY the same dosage of EXACTLY the same drug but are HALF the price or more. Buy them to save you lots of money!
Summary: All drugs come with risks, weigh them out yourself before using

shroud - 29/08/08 Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride is also what the American version of benydryl is, while here it is made of Acrivastine in one product or Cetirizine hydrochloride (the one a day benadryl product) |
