Will help you get to sleep but will not keep you sleeping!

Advantages: Helped my drift off to sleep
Disadvantages: Didn't keep me sleeping
I used to work in a pharmacy so I am rather well informed about the products out there which help people sleep. Trouble sleeping affects a huge amount of people and with my boyfriend working shifts he is certainly one of them! My purchase of Nytol one a night, however came when I recently started a new job and was having trouble dozing off at night.I am one of these people who worry that I'm not getting enough sleep, then I end up not getting to sleep due to this worry (silly I know).
~ ~ ~ Price and Pack size ~ ~ ~
I popped into my local pharmacy and purchased myself a packet of these tablets. They cost me £4.79 for a pack of 16 - this is the only pack size they come in. It should be noted that in the UK this is a pharmacy only product so it can only be purchased over the counter.
~ ~ ~ Ingredients ~ ~ ~
The active ingredient in Nytol one a night is 50mg of diphenhydramine hydrochloride. This is an anti-histamine which can cause drowsiness. There are actually many types of anti-histamine, which can have this effect, and Piriton is another one.
~ ~ ~ Dosage ~ ~ ~
As the title suggests, this is a one dose a night product. The suggestion is that you take it 20 minutes. There is, however, just a normal Nytol which contains 25 mg of the active ingredient rather than the 50mg in the "One a Night". This kind of made me wonder why they brought out a one a night product, as the only major difference is that you have to take 1 instead of 2. The bonus being, however, with the normal Nytol is that you can take 1 tablet if you feel the sedative effect is too much.
~ ~ ~ Results ~ ~ ~
I took the tablet 20 minutes before I intended to go to sleep and then settled down in bed and read my book to relax. I did actually start to fell quite sleepy but I often wonder if it's a placebo effect or if it's the actual tablet. Nytol did get me to sleep but the problem arose in the middle of the night! It should be noted that Nytol will only stay in your system for a certain amount of time. Therefore, it does not keep you asleep all night - just makes getting to sleep slightly easier! I have used this product on numerous occasions with differing results - sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't! I do not experience and drowsiness in the morning after use, but my mother took it and said she felt really bad the next morning (tired and kind of spaced out)!
~ ~ ~ Conclusion ~ ~ ~
Drugs have different effects on different people so reviews are often hard to judge. This is just my experience with this product and I have no idea how other people will react. I would suggest just purchasing the normal Nytol and trying 1 tablet first to see how you get on. If you are fine with that then up the dose to 2 but it provides more variety instead of the one a night.
I would recommend this as a product for occasional trouble sleeping but for anything more than that I don't think anything can beat having a word with your GP.
