Advantages: It works, it's not too strong!
Disadvantages: For me none!
After having my first cold in months recently along with my twin boys I stocked up on all medicines and antidotes to at least try and make me feel a little normal, although I don't think I ever feel that way anyway lol! One of these many potions I picked up were Olbas Oil.
Olbas Oil is an inhalant decongestant, it comes in an easily recogniseable bright orange and mint green box and it clearly tells us on the box that it is for immediate relief for catarrh, colds and sinuses. Directions for use are provided on the box also if you havn't used it before and are not sure as although it sounds like a very similar product to vicks it is actually in liquid form in a bottle rather than gel form in a compact tub. Instead with Olbas oil you drop the liquid onto a tissue or hanky and even your pillowcases at night, only depending on age you use little or more drops per person.
It tells us on the box that Olbas Oil is a mixture of essential pure plant oils for relief of bronchial and nasal congestion and hayfever by inhalation, and for symptomatic relief of muscular pain by application to the skin. It's also Non Greasy.
Some of this was new to me as I've only ever used it to allow for a little extra breathing when bunged up with a cold and thick in the throat as it clears the airways slightly providing relaxing relief for a short time without being quite as intense as the likes of Vicks. It does have a strong scent, but more a minty scent rather than an overwhelming menthol odour, even though from looking at the ingredients it does contain some sort of menthol element.
Olbas oil comes in a small and compact brown bottle, which can be easily fitted into a handbag or even a pocket to take out for quick relief whilst out and about as well as being able to be discreet about how you're feeling if you want to.
It's not going to solve all your problems but it definitely clears thick throats and noses for a short while without burning the eyeballs and melting the nose hairs while you're gaining some relief and normality.
You can even buy a children's version of Olbas oil too for when your little angels are ill and full up with colds if you do feel that this is too strong for them or they are too young.
I don't suffer from hayfever so I can't comment on any benefits from hayfever I'm afraid. Nor have I used it for any muscular pain, however I do find the smell quite relaxing and calming too whilst smelling it and it surprisngly eases my muscles and tensions as well as my colds slightly too.
Like with Vicks I have also used this dropped in hot water, either to drop my head over and breathe in the eucalyptus, minted air and enjoy some free breathing and relaxation for a short space of time or to sit in my bedroom to clear the air too! I love this stuff I feel it works yet it's not as intense or overwhelming as Vicks so I can enjoy this one more.
Summary: A decent product that does what its meant to!
