Advantages: It works, and works quickly

Disadvantages: Can have side effects and cause rebound congestion

This stuff is a God Send! My nose has a mind of it's own and I have suffered with my sinuses for years. I get really severe hayfever and my nose can completely block, especially at night. it makes it really hard to breathe and even harder to sleep. It actually feels like my nose has been plugged.

In the past I have experienced problems with decongestant sprays. I ended up having bad nosebleeds and had to have my nose cauterised. I use them now with no problems, but that's probably because the blood vessels have been burned away! But be warned, this stuff can make your nose bleed, and bleed badly.

The most important thing is...this works, and it works for about ten hours with one application. You spray one spray into each nostil and it clears your nose within about 5 minutes. It really is an absolute necessity for me to be able to sleep sometimes.

The active ingredient is xylometazoline hydrochloride, it works by shrinking the swollen blood vessels in your nose and relieving the pressure. You should consult your doctor before use if you are taking any other medicines, and this medicine cannot be used to treat children under 12. A 15 ml spray bottle costs around £3.50 and can be used up to 3 times a day. It shouldn't be neccesary to use it more than twice though as the relief lasts so long.

Another word of warning, it is possible to become 'addicted' to this kind of spray decongestant. If you use it too much, you will experience rebound congestion and end up having to use more and more. This happened to me and it's a difficult cycle to break. I would say only use it when you absolutely have to, like to get a good nights sleep.

Great stuff, but use with caution.

Summary: Please be careful!

*be careful taking ANY decongestant if you take betablockers! (I mention this coz no one told me till I'd been taking betablockers for over 3 years and using this sort of thing when I needed to without thinking about it!).
