Advantages: Cheap, effective
Disadvantages: tastes foul, limited availability
Doctors dont normally advise taking cough medicines but after spending the morning in an air conditioned room coughing and spluttering, I found myself in the chemist begging for them to give me something to stop me coughing for the rest of the day.
The assistant recommended something called Kilkof which I had never heard of before and told me that other customers had told her it was good. I decided to give it a try, at only £1.49 for an 150ml bottle I wasnt going to lose much if it didn't work.
I ignored the dosing instructions and took a huge swig straight from the bottle. The stuff tastes pretty foul, I dont know how to describe it other than being like medicine. I took another swig just to make sure it worked. I felt a really warm feeling go all through me and my throat became numb and I stopped coughing for a little while. By the end of the day (from lunchtime till I finished work at 9pm) I ended up drinking the rest of the bottle.
I've tried a lot of cough medicines in the past and dont find they work very well and I always need to take more than the adult dose to have an effect. This has been one of the best I have tried.
Lets have a look at the active ingredients in this medicine. Its got cetylpyridinium chloride, benzoin tincture, ipecauanha tincture and capsicum tincture. With the help of google I can see how this works. Cetylpyridinium chloride is an antiseptic which kills bacteria, benzoin is used for colds and athsma, ipecaunha is an expectornat which helps to dissolve mucous and the capsicum seems to provide the warming sensation. It also contains anaesthetic in the inactive ingredients which really helped to soothe my throat.
This medicine is made by Parkinson's and was established in 1848 so I'm surprised not to see it before. I've looked for it in a couple of places this week but only seen it in the chemist I originally bought it from. I think I'm going to stock up on this when I see it for my winter coughs and colds.
Summary: A good old fashioned remedy.
