Advantages: Cheap and cheerful

Disadvantages: Not guarenteed non-drowsy in small minority

I have suffered with hayfever for many years and it can put a real dampener on my summer time fun when I have a really bad day. I've always kept a stock of allergy relief tables in the kitchen cupboard for those occasions when the pollen gets almost unbearable.

I used to spend a fortune on branded hayfever remedy's convinced that the higher the price and more well known the name, the more effective the remedy would be and the quicker it would work.

It got to the point where I was trying to put up with the symptoms as long as possible before taking anything as I simply couldn't afford to be paying up to 3.00 for a packet of 7 tablets.

This is when I decided to bite the bullet and opt for a cheaper alternative.

I picked up the box of Tesco's own brand allergy relief tablets and opted for the non-drowsy version as I don't like the idea of driving to and from work when I've been taking anything that will make me even more tired.

The active ingredient is Lortadine and these particular tablets contain 10mg. They are to be taken one a day and promise to be fast acting and suitable for a variety of different allergies such as dust mite, hives and pet allergies.

The packaging is quite basic but the one thing I did notice is that the front of the packaging is imprinted with Braille, I thought this was a brilliant idea as I have an uncle who suffers sight problems and he has trouble figuring out which packet is which in his cupboards.

There is a patient information leaflet inside the packet and it recommends that you read all the information before you take the tablets to make yourself aware of the possible side effects that you may suffer and also if you would be recommended not to take them for any medical reasons.

The tablets cost 0.98p per pack of 7 which is a nice and cheap and you can even afford to buy more than one pack at a time which is a great idea for me as I usually keep one in the car in case of emergencies.

The tables are really effective, luckily my hayfever hasn't been too bad of late but when my eyes start itching, it doesn't take very long at all for it to start working. It certainly does live up to its promise of delivering fast relief.

I'm very lucky not to have suffered from any of the side effects of this type of medication but it does warn users that although Lortadine is non-drowsy in the majority of people who use it, it is not 100% guaranteed.

I am really glad that I changed to these tablets. They have saved me a fortune over the summer months and have given me my time back in the sun without feeling tired and irritable. I do find that the effects seem to wear off by the end of the night but some of the other brands have this same problem so I can't really mark it down for that.

I have been really impressed with these, after all they have exactly the same ingredient in them as the bigger brands but without all the fancy packaging and advertising that the consumer ultimately ends up paying for.

Supermarket brand allergy tablets are cheap and effective! If it weren't for free prescriptions, I'd buy them all the time.

I buy cheap ones from Superdrug that contain exactly the same as Zirtek
