Advantages: Stops you sneezing and itching

Disadvantages: Not actually the cheapest

Tesco do two sorts of antihistamine - the two main sorts that you can get. They are Loratadine and Cetirizine. Most people find that one of these works better for them than the other, so you just have to try both and see which is for you.

Loratadine is the one that works best for me. Loratadine is the active ingredient in Clarytin, which can be very expensive. These Tesco Allergy relief tablets are the same as Clarytin. Well, they have the same active ingredient, and they look the same and they appear to work the same!

They work to prevent the symptoms of hayfever type allergies - sneezing and itching. I take them daily throughout the summer, and also in the winter when I'm planning on visiting friends with animals. My husband steals them from me when he wants to eat a lot of quality ice cream, since he has a cream intolerance which manifests in sneezing. They're pretty good when you've been bitten by insects too, although a topical cream probably works better.

I find that the effect builds up over several days - I need to take one tablet every day and keep on taking them, for them to really work properly.

OK, the Tesco tablets. You get 7 in a pack, 7 small white tablets in a blister pack, with an instruction leaflet. They cost around 50p for 7. This is much better than Clarytin (£1 for 7) but not as good as bulk-buying loratadine from an online pharmacy. Last summer I paid 99p for 30 tablets, and no postage charge either. I would recommend looking on www.moneysavingexpert.com at the beginning of summer - they usually tell you where to get the best bargain!

They are, as they say, "non-drowsy". Loratadine is a type of anti-histamine that doesn't affect the brain and therefore should not make you sleepy. You can also take them when you are pregnant.

So, these tablets are good if you know that Loratadine works for you, and you need some allergy tablets quickly or only need a few. If you're going to be taking a lot, search for cheaper ones online - they're all the same thing inside.

Summary: Good if you only need a few

Have you checked out chemistdirect.com? They have Loratadine tablets for 60p for 30 tablets and Cetirizine for 29p for 30 tablets.

As long as the tablets contain the active ingredient that works for you then it doesn't matter what brand you buy.

They also sell other hayfever remedies for good prices.
