Tesco Paracetamol Oral Suspension
Disadvantages: Slow to work, pain relief doesn't last as long as Calpol
From the moment my daughter started teething she has had a lot of pain and trouble with sore gums, and I think it is made worse by the fact that she is a dry teether, she doesn't dribble at all. We seem therefore to go through a LOT of calpol, not during the day so much as she has got older and is more easily distracted from the pain, but particularly at night. This last week she has been suffering at night with her bottom molars pushing upwards, and so in my weekly shop at Tesco I picked up their own version of Calpol, the Tesco paracetamol oral suspension, which costs almost half the price of Calpol at £1.50 for a 100ml bottle. I have previously tried the Boots version of Calpol and really felt it to be just as good as the real thing, so was confident the Tesco version would be the same
THis TEsco paracetamol oral suspension is suitable for babies from 3 months, and as well as being strawberry flavour, it is sugar free and colour free, which I much prefer, especially when I am giving it at night. I certainly don't want a sugar rush.
On the front of the box, Tesco claim that this oral suspension is a fast, effective pain and fever reliever for babies and children. It is suitable for those with a fever but also for other pain including teething pain which was what I was buying it for. It can also be used for post vaccination fever for those between 2 to 3 months but only the small amount and there is further advice on the side of the box about this.
If I think we are in for a bad night with teething pain, I have sometimes given paracetamol before my daughter goes to bed, if I don't think it is as bad I won't give it to my daughter unless she wakes crying in pain. There is no problem getting this medicine into my daughter, even at night, she will quite happily take it, so it must taste nice. Now, I didn't expect it to work instantly, as even Calpol can take a while to kick in, but on the occasions I have given this to my daughter when she has woke crying sore with the pain, I felt it has taken a while to work in relieving the pain, and I also didn't feel the effects of the pain relief wore off much quicker than the likes of calpol would. Even on a night, I would have given this oral suspension before bed, my daughter would still wake crying, long before I would have expected such a medicine to wear off.
So, I have been disappointed with this product. Maybe for some pain during the day, it may be fine, but certainly for teething pain at night I have not found it to be as effective as the real thing nor as good as the Boots version and I just am not confident in using this product to give my daughter the pain relief she needs for long enough. Disappointing and not something I would be purchasing again, as I would rather pay more for the more effective product.
Summary: A cheaper version of Calpol but nowhere near as effective
