Advantages: Soothing, tasty sweets

Disadvantages: Too many cause a laxative effect

When I was at school and I had some money with me, I would often buy sweets at break time. Sometimes, I would buy Tunes, despite my parents telling me they were more for medicinal purposes than to enjoy as sweets. I couldn't understand why I needed the toilet so much after eating a whole packet of them!

Tunes used to come in tubes, each 'sweet' a square with a slight inward curve on each flat side. Now, they come more as an oval and rounded 'sweet', and are slightly larger. They are in a small flip-top box as opposed to a tube, and you can buy them per box, or in a pack of three boxes, depending on your tastes and how many you want.

The pack of three has a different flavour for each box. Traditionally, blackcurrant Tunes are the most popular, but the other flavours are cherry and strawberry. While I am not too much of a fan of the cherry, I like the other two flavours. Each pack contains around 14 sweets, and the 'sweets' themselves have various medicinal ingredients, the main one being menthol, from the mint plant, which is good for aiding breathing and soothing your throat. And this is essentially what they are - throat sweets, designed to soothe your throat and clear your sinuses. They are probably not the best option for helping you to clear your cold - Lockets are probably better to aid that.

There is a warning on the box that 'excessaive consumption may produce laxative effects, as this has always been the case. As with everything, too many of them aren't necessarily good for you either, although they are a decent source of Vitamin C and do taste very nice. I recommend these throat sweets. The pack of 3 is generally available for around the £1.50 mark, while an individual box should cost around 60p.

Summary: Good throat sweets
