Advantages: Numbs the pain
Disadvantages: Doesn't last long enough between doses
I am lucky that most of the time when I suffer from a sore throat that it is easy soothed by just sucking on some throat lozenges but last year I had a nasty flu virus which really knocked me for six with one of the worst side effects being a really sore throat.
It was so bad that I actually had trouble swallowing and lozenges just weren't doing anything for it so I popped in to my local Boot's and the pharmacist recommended that I try this ultra chloraseptic throat spray which cost £5.45. As I was absolutely desperate I happily paid the money and couldn't wait to get back to the car to try it out.
It contains Benzocaine which is a local anaesthetic to numb the throat so that you are able to swallow, eat and drink again without it feeling like you are swallowing cut glass. It is a spray which makes it easier to be able to target the right area of the throat where you are having the most pain.
This tastes horrible and there is no getting around that. Even when I tried my best to only hit the back of my throat some of the spray always managed to end up in my mouth.
Although it was horrible the fact that this actually worked was enough incentive to keep using it even though I hated the taste.
It didn't take long to start working and within a few minutes I could already feel it starting to numb my throat and within about 5 to 10 minutes the pain was considerably less than it was previously. I found this to be absolutely indispensable and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again if I had a reall bad throat.
It didn't take all the pain away but it made it so that I didn't feel like I was swallowing razor blades anymore. After this got to work I could again eat and drink without wanting to cry and the searing pain had turned in to more of a dull ache instead which although doesn't sound good was a million times better than the pain I had before.
Unfortunately like all anaesthetics this didn't last for ever and the pain gradually started creeping back after an hour or so and as you can only use the spray every two hours there was some time in between doses where I still had to suffer. The best thing about this was that I could use it at night and it took the pain away enough for me to be able to get to sleep.
You can only use this for a maximum of three days but luckily by the third day the pain was much better than it had been and I could switch to lozenges again which since the pain wasn't as severe did the job of soothing my throat.
This was great for getting me through the worst of the pain of the sore throat and it worked where lozenges couldn't touch the pain.
Summary: Stops you feeling like you are swallowing cut glass
