I have been trying First Defence for the last year and have not had a cold since. If I think I have been exposed to colds or if I feel the first signs of a cold, I use it three or four times a day as the instructions suggest. Of course, I cannot prove it has prevented my catching colds, but I strongly suspect that it might have.

The only side effect is that I observe discomfort and a small amount of phlegm in the upper chest and windpipe if I use it prior to exercise or before going to sleep. I assume that this is because I breathe deeply at those times and suck some of it in, which the instructions do caution against. However, as I also use Alanase on and off for nasal blockage unrelated to colds, the correlation is not certain.

So far , so good.
