I thought I would write a review about this wonder product. I was in town today and started to sniff so thought i would give it a go as everyone raved about it. I went back to the car in the carpark to try it... so glad I did. The claim its " fights cold germs before they can take hold"...micor-gel spray. When ... Read the complete review

"First defence" is an interesting concept. A nasal spray that is meant to keep colds at bay. How could that work? There is no cure for the common cold, so logically you can't prevent it either. Other than by eating healthy and staying inside and never having contact with other human beings. But alas, I'm not a hermit, neither are you ... Read the complete review

I first started using Vick's First Defence after I heard my stepfather raving about how effective it is. He works closely with members of the public who often go to see him even when they are sick. He was very frequently off work with colds a flu before getting his hands on this product. Now he is sick much less often and he reckons it is down ... Read the complete review

Vicks claim that their First Defence spray will kill cold germa before they develop. The big question is does it really work? Well you'll be surprised to hear that it actually does. Since I first started using it about 2 years ago, I now make sure I always have some in the house as spare. When you get the first sign of a ... Read the complete review

Vicks First Defence by Proctor & Gamble This is a micro gel nasal spray which is designed to prevent a cold. If used at the first sign of a cold, it actually manages to prevent it occurring! So okay, I was dubious about how effective this would be. Over the years, I have tried many, many products which claim to help get ... Read the complete review

i see that several people here are totally dissing this product which i find amazing. those that have a problem with it are simply not using it correctly. in particular those getting headaches are doing so because they are sniffing after applying the nasal spray - i know because i got a few myself. it specifically says in the instructions not to ... I took tried Vicks First Defence last night and it seemed fine. I used it again this morning and developed a bad reaction. There was instant pain which may have been caused by the spray. I had great discomfort at the top of my left nasal cavity which gradually spread. I had a very runny nose, painful red eyes, pressure in my head. The whole of my head felt hot and the temple swelled. It was scary. Phoned NHS Direct but due to them being busy I got cut off twice. I eventually got through to my doctors out of hours service who made a hospital appointment for me. The effects are now subsiding so I cancelled the hospital appointment. This is not a substance I will be using again.

The bottom line here is - i don't care exactly how this works, miracle cure or placebo effect - but it absolutely does work on me. Before i started using First Defence, i'd get on average 3-4 colds per year, and two of those would be real humdingers - the sneezing constantly, swollen face, streaming nose, feeling like scratching my own eyes out ... Used First Defence last night for the first time - never again - excruciating pain when administered and 2 hours of severe pain in forehead and temple area. I put mine in the bin and I recommend anyone who has this product in their medicine cabinet do the same. If you do keep it PLEASE DO NOT use it on your children !
I am forced to give 1 star to move on but I do not in fact rate this product !

I worked in a Pharmacy and as a result I was in contact with many a snottybeaked customer. I had an important singing gig coming up in the calander and was fearful of catching a cold and missing out. This had just come on to the market. I was really excited about it and fancied trying it. I stupidly paid the £7 (minus discount mind ... Read the complete review

I'm a Primary School Teacher surrounded by snotty nosed little darlings who don't use tissues and forget to cover their mouth when they sneeze. It was inevitable I was going to catch every germ going.... or was it? During my student years, every year I was given a primary placement and every placement I would have the worst cold ever ... I used to think Vicks Defence was a great medicine, which worked miracles until recently when it actually encouraged my cold to develop. It is not surprising considering the medicine is made from antibodies from previous viruses to stimulate an immune response. It comes in a blue shiny box with 'First Defence' in block capitals on the ... Read the complete review

I didn't believe that someone had invented something to dampen or cure the effects of the common cold. "Oh please!" I said to myself...eyes rolling upwards. Then I saw my father, who has cancer, saying he felt like he was coming down with a cold. "What the hell"...I thought, I'll nip in and buy it ... Read the complete review

A few months back, my wife purchased this stuff, and said we should all be mindful of the fact it's there, just in case. About 3 weeks ago her flu started, and when I got home after my week in Birmingham she was really suffering. I rushed to get the nasal spray but the box hadn't been opened (hence the reason why she is ill maybe!). ... Read the complete review

Oh the joys of being a parent! Not only have I had to nurse my poor eldest baby back to something resembling "healthy", but now she is on the mend I have had to contend with her bug myself..... I was a bit sceptical of this product when I first heard of it. After all, I know enough about biology to know that the common cold is spread by hundreds of different viruses and is therefore currently uncurable. However, a product from a trusted brand such as Vick's and with such a hefty price tag (my 15ml bottle set me back 7 quid!), I decided ... Read the complete review

Having just spent a couple of days visiting my friend among all the other First Years at university (90% with the dreaded 'Freshers Flu') I decided when I got home to try and defend myself against the disease! I've been using First Defence for a couple of years now and it seems to work for me. It's a bit unpleasant for a few minutes after using it but that's all and I can't recommend it highly enough.
I think it's most effective when you use it as people around you are starting to show signs of colds.
There are plenty of reviews here where it hasn't worked and caused side effects but if you don't try something then you'll never know and trying it is what I'd recommend you do.
Some of the negative reviews talk of feeling the spray dripping from the back of your throat but this never happens to me. As far as I'm aware you spray it up the nose and don't inhale so that it stays up your nose. Basically, catch the drips from your nose!

I used this product a few months ago after a friend tried it and said it reduced the length of her cold. Having asthma I'm all for avoiding colds and the inevitable chest problems so this seemed like a great idea. I bought it from Boots for about £7.50 and hoped it worked as you can only use it once, so if you feel like you're getting ... Read the complete review

I recently bought Vick's First Defence on the recommendation of my mum who swears by it. I paid £5.99 for a 15ml bottle, which I think is the standard price for it. It is available over the counter in most supermarkets and pharmacies. I used it exactly as directed at the first sign of a cold and, at first, I really thought it had worked ...
