Vicks First Defence
by Mel My immune system is not the best. If someone in the room has a cold, I can be sure I will get it, too. So imagine my joy when I woke up one day and my boyfriend said he felt as if he was getting a cold. Sure enough, a few hours later, I felt that every so sly tiredness creeping up on me and I felt weak etc I was so happy ... when I remembered that I had bought this spray!! I used it right away and I kid you not-- about 3-4 sprays into each nostril and about 20 minutes later, I could feel me brighten up again!! Suddenly, I didn't feel weak anymore! Nor tired! I am not sure if this was a placebo effect because it helped so quickly. But you can be sure that I will use this again next time I feel I am getting sick! Amazing!! I never got sick, only better. I've used this before when I had already developed full symptoms, and it is true, it helps with that too and as the other person before me said, it clears your nose almost instantly- that is true. But it IS first defense and won't help the same way when you are already sick. Also true is that it is pretty unpleasant- it'll sort of dry your throat out and sit there for a while, with a very slight but really annoying burning sensation. Not painful at all, just unpleasant- but hey, I'll take that feeling any day if it stops me from developing a cold. And it really, really did. I googled the spray just so I could write a review about it and share this with you :) Read the complete review |

Vicks First Defence
by 2012Saver My colds generally all follow the same pattern - the first day I feel the symptoms coming on - I will sneeze a little more than usual and might have a tickle in my throat. The second day my nose is blocked and I am constantly sneezing and the sore throat has gotten worse, along with a headache developing. The sore throat is usually the ... first thing to resolve by about day 3-4 and I will continue to have alternating runny/blocked/sneezey nose for up to a week. A month or two ago I was in the medicine aisle at Tesco and came across this Vick's first defence nasal spray. Whilst I didn't have a cold at the time I decided to buy this and keep it in my medicine cupboard for the next time I felt a cold coming on. A couple of weeks ago, a few of my colleagues at work had been sneezing and spluttering, and the next day I felt that dreaded tickle in my throat. A couple of sneezes later and I remembered about the Vick's First Defence that was waiting for me at home. Vick's First Defence spray is a medicinal nasal spray that is designed to be used as soon as you feel a cold coming on. It is clinically proven to stop a cold from developing, reduce symptom severity and length of duration. It is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and above. This product comes in a shiny blue and green cardboard box. It has a shield logo and the name of the product on the front in fairly large writing. It is quite noticeable on the shelf in the shops. Inside the cardboard box is a little glass bottle containing the product with a spray top. To use the product adults should apply 2-3 sprays up each nostril up to 4 times a day. It should be used as soon as the symptoms of a cold are first noticed. Use should continue for 2 days after symptoms subside to avoid the symptoms coming back. You simply insert the nozzle into your nostril, aiming it outwards and press the pump firmly. The instructions state that you should avoid inhaling the product deeply. Admittedly when I first sprayed this up my nose I found it quite unpleasant, as I do with most nasal sprays. The spray caused my nostril to sting a little, although it was not unbearably painful. After spraying I found my nose ran a little and I needed a tissue immediately. I noticed that my nose became unblocked almost instantly and breathing was a lot easier. After using this product twice the first evening I noticed my cold developing, by the next morning I woke up and was relieved to find that the cold symptoms were gone. I followed the instructions and continued to use the product for 2 days and am happy to report that my cold never really became a "proper" cold. After finishing the 2 days of applying this after my symptoms had gone, there was still about half of the 15ml bottle left. However for hygiene reasons I don't think it is good to keep nasal sprays for another time as after all they have been up your nose. I therefore threw this in the bin which felt like a bit of a waste, as this is a fairly pricey product that averages around £7.00 for one 15ml bottle. All in all I would recommend this product as it definitely seemed to live up to it's claims and stopped my cold in it's tracks. I am giving it a 4 star rating, taking one star off as it is a little unpleasant to spray up your nose, and also because it is pricey. Thanks for reading/rating. Read the complete review |

Vicks First Defence
by Christina I have used first defence nasal spray quite a few times and have found it to be actually very effective in stopping a cold from developing. I was therefore extremely shocked and concerned when after exercising one day, I did one spray up my left nostril and immediately there was this shooting pain that went up the left side of my face, ... pounding headache on this left side, left earache and my left eye swelled up and started tearing. It took about an hour to calm down. I thought it was because I had just been exercising hard and it shouldn't be used immediately afterwards. Since then I have used the spray with no problems on a few other occasions but this morning the same thing happened, this time I hadn't been exercising. The pain was so immediate and intense I had to take two paracetamols and lie down in agony. I am surprised that there is no comment on this as a side effect on any of the accompanying documents. It is very frustrating as I do find when it works it is very effective but I'm terrified to feel that intense pain again. Read the complete review |
