Advantages: Eases/resolves griping and wind
Disadvantages: none
Good old fashioned Woodwards Gripe Water - nothing wrong with old fashioned! It's something you associate with babies even if you don't have any - I think everyone has heard of it. It's been around since 1851 !
You know when your little one needs this magic stuff - the crying starts, the pained expression and the knees held up the the chest. These symptoms are caused by muscle spasms and excess acid created when air bubbles form in the tummy. We all know what trapped wind pains are like and how painful it can be, well imagine how a baby feels. They don't understand why they feel like this. The stomach produces acid - this is due to the amount of air bubbles that are trapped in the babies stomach - the acid is produced to break down the food that the stomach thinks is there when really its just full of gas. The stomach muscles go into cramps and spasms.
Woodwards Gripe Water is sugar and alcohol free - no good for us adults then eh ?? The active ingredients are Terpeneless Dill Seed Oil which warms and relaxes the tummy, breaking down trapped air bubbles PLUS Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate to neutralise the acid.
How to use - Shake the bottle then dose according to instructions. I won't state the dose at the moment as I am aware (or have been told) that the dose or age limits have been altered recently.
Obviously if you find that the dose you have been instructed to give has no effect then you should really seek medical advice. Gripe Water should never be used where impaired kidney function or hypersensitivity to the preservatives included (E215, E217 & E219) exists.
Gripe Water comes in 150m bottles and is priced at between £2.30 and £3.00.
I think its one of those "essentials" for your cupboard. Make sure you invest in a dropper as spoons can be very awkward to use when you have a baby wriggling with pain. I bought a little set with a dropper and spoon from morrisons (it was just randomly hung up I think around the washing powers - why there?) It was so easy to use - you just dispense the correct dose right into babies mouth as slow or as fast as is required.
I do recommend this but you will find it works great for some babies and possibly not so good for others -these babies are all individuals !
Summary: an essential addition to your babies medicine box
