Advantages: Fast working
Disadvantages: Very easy to get addicted to.
My daughter loves Woodward's Gripe Water. A 5ml spoonful of it if she has really bad wind and gripes seems to work ever so fast and a dab on her dummy helps to settle her to sleep. I have tried her with Nurse Harvey's Gripe Water but think I will stick with Woodwards as it seems to be less greasy and sticky. The gripe water acts as an antacid and the dill seed oil is a carminative that helps to soothe a fretful baby by warming and relaxing the tummy and allowing trapped air bubbles to disperse. The active ingredients include Terpeneless Dill Seed Oil 2.3mg/5ml Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate 52.5mg/5ml and it also contains E217, E219 and E215. Apparently no undesireable effects have been recorded from using Gripe water properly but it does state that it should not be given to babies under one month old and that there should be no more than six doses given in 24hrs. I couldn't be without gripe water at the moment as my daughter likes a little bit on her dummy. I use this for a variety of reasons, such as, helping her drift off to sleep, calming her when fretful and to keep her occupied whilst waiting for her bottle. She very rarely has to have a full spoonful but I know it is there if I need it. On the whole I would recommend gripe water as I have seen that it works but like everything it might not work for everyone. It can be quite expensive, £2.19 for 150ml, but I have found that bodycare sell Woodwards for £1.89 and Diskos sell Nurse Harvey's for £1.59. If any body else knows where to get it cheaper then I would appreciate knowing as I often throw some away after it has been open for 14 days. Perhaps a smaller bottle would be better.
