      Advantages

      • "Fun to play"

      Disadvantages

      • "Takes longer to set up than play"

Honey tree pulling leaves game, don't disturb the bees!

My girls recently received this game for their 4th birthday, it is one that they familiar with from playing it at pre school and so they were keen to play it. An Early Learning Centre toy I was expecting it to be of good quality.

      What do you get?
The game is designed to be a tree with the leaves coming out of a honey pot. These 2 pieces slot together easily and you can then start to insert the leaves. This bit is more time consuming as the long stalk of the leaf has to be fed through holes on either side of the honey pot. As you get towards the end of the 32 leaves it gets harder to do and I find my girls getting bored waiting for the game to be ready to play again. Once the leaves are in place the 30 little plastic bees can be added to the top of the honey pot where they are caught by the leaf stalks.

      In play
Playing the game is relatively simple and the game is suitable from 3 years and for 2-4 players. Starting with the youngest player they take it in turns to pull a leaf and it's stalk from the honey pot. The objective being not to disturb the bees but inevitably they start to fall and the winner is the player with the fewest bees at the end.
My girls enjoy counting how many bees they have and the more they play the more aware they are getting of the which stalk will cause bees to fall.
It's a shame that the time it takes to set up the game is longer than it takes to actually play, but it's a simple and fun game for preschoolers.

A great antacid tablet in peppermint

My husband suffers badly with indigestion and Rennie is what he uses and so when I started suffering with heartburn when I was pregnant these were easily to hand.

I had never suffered with any form of indigestion or heartburn until I got pregnant and even then I managed to avoid it until the 3rd trimester. I found that taking one of these tablets was enough to provide relief from my symptoms and I still use them occasionally now if I am suffering from discomfort after eating.

      The product
The small square tablets come in a foil backed blister pack making them easy to dispense and handy to pop in your bag when out. Each strip contains 6 tablets and has the expiry date printed on it, useful if you find them in a bag you had forgotten about and want to know how old they are! The expiry date is 3 years from the manufacture date so if like me you only suffer occasionally its good to know they last, obviously with my husband taking them regularly they never get near this date.

      The taste
I find these pleasant to chew, slightly chalky from the calcium they contain but easy to swallow. The peppermint flavour leaves my mouth feeling fresh.

      How quickly do they work?
I find these very fast acting, within 5 minutes symptoms are improved and as I only ever suffer mildly I don't find that symptoms return.

      Price and availability
Rennie peppermint are available in a variety of packet sizes. I usually buy the larger 72 packs but 12, 24, 48 and 96 are also available. A pack of 72 currently costs £4.50 at Tesco which is more expensive than own brands.

      Would I recommend?
Yes, Rennie are fast acting and easy to take. They are suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding although the packet advises to contact your Doctor after 14 days.

Disappointed with the fragrance but a good conditioner

I've used Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner for quite a while now and although I was happy with the one for 'normal' hair when they brought out this seductively straight range I thought it was worth a try.

The bottle is attractive in shocking pink and it certainly stands out on the shop shelf. The conditioner bottle stands on it's lid unlike the shampoo which stands on it's lid. This makes it more likely to get knocked over in my shower, especially when the bottle is getting low. I do like in principle that the shampoo and conditioner bottles stand different ways as it makes it easier to tell them apart when washing my hair.
As it opens at the bottom it doesn't matter when the bottle is getting low as the conditioner is still there ready to use, this is particularly good as I find conditioner quite thick and harder to shake to the bottom of a bottle.
The lid opens by pushing it down to open a small slot, this is easy to do one handed and ensures that not too much conditioner comes out at once.

I'm not as keen on the pink lily fragrance of this conditioner as some of the others in the Herbal Essences range but it is okay and doesn't linger on my hair after washing so doesn't bother me. I have shoulder length hair and I'm quite generous with the amount of conditioner I use. It separates my hair easily just by running my fingers through it and I don't have to comb it through to remove tangles as they have all gone. It rinses out easily and leaves my hair feeling soft.
My scalp can be sensitive to some conditioners but I haven't had any problems with this one and would definitely purchase it again if the 'normal' one wasn't available.

This conditioner is meant to make your hair 'seductively straight' and I have noticed that my hair isn't as flyaway after using the shampoo and conditioner but my hair still needs hair straighteners after washing it if I want to wear it down.

        Price and availability
This conditioner is available in 200ml and 400ml bottles, I bought it when it was on buy one get one free at Tesco (currently £3.79). The 200ml bottle is currently £1 at Asda which is a good price if you want to give it a try for the first time.

        Would I recommend?
Yes, this is a good conditioner and leaves my hair feeling soft and less flyaway than usual. The pink lily fragrance isn't one I would chose and as the straight benefits aren't particularly noticeable on my hair this isn't one that I'll be rushing out to buy again.

Good shampoo but hair no straighter

I've used Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner for quite a while now and although I was happy with the one for 'normal' hair when they brought out this seductively straight range I thought it was worth a try.

The bottle is attractive in shocking pink and it certainly stands out on the shop shelf. The bottle stands on it's base and is stable when stood in my shower. It opens at the top which does mean that when the bottle is getting low that I have to shake it to get the product to come out or stand it upside down. The bottle shape isn't designed for this and it does annoy me slightly when it easily gets knocked over.
The lid opens by pushing it down to open a small slot, this is easy to do one handed and ensures that not too much shampoo comes out at once.

I'm not as keen on the fragrance of this shampoo as some of the others in the Herbal Essences range but it is okay and doesn't linger on my hair after washing so doesn't bother me. I have shoulder length hair and a 10p sized amount of shampoo lathers up my hair nicely. It is easy to rinse out and doesn't leave any residue. My hair feels nice and clean when I've washed it with this shampoo.
My scalp can be sensitive to some shampoos but I haven't had any problems with this one and would definitely purchase it again if the 'normal' one wasn't available.

        Would I recommend?
As a shampoo yes I like it but the fragrance lets it down and it doesn't make my hair any straighter.

        Good quality Peppa Pig plates

My girls both love Peppa Pig and so for their 3rd birthday Peppa Pig was the obvious theme. They had their main party at a soft play place but as we were having family over I thought it would be nice to have Peppa Pig plates to serve the cake on.

The design of the plates we bought had Peppa and her little brother George on wearing party hats, the plates had a red edging with small white stars. They are attractive to look at and both my girls thought they were great and couldn't wait to eat off of them.

The plates came in a pack of 8, I bought 2 packs as we needed 12 plates. They come wrapped in cellophane and so are ready to use once opened. The pack was easy to get into and the plates were easy to separate.

For a paper plate these are good quality and easily coped with the pieces of cake that we served on them. They didn't feel flimsy like some paper plates and I would have felt confident using them for a range of party food. The picture side of the plates was slightly shiny, this added to the look of the plate but also made it slightly waterproof to odd spills.

You can give paper plates to kids without fear of breakages and when they've finished you can just clear them all away. No washing up meant more time spent with the birthday girls.

        Price and availability
I spotted these plates in my local Sainsbury's but I have since seen the elsewhere. They are currently available in Asda for £1.25, which is a reasonable price for Peppa Pig plates.

        Would I recommend?
Yes, these are great for Peppa Pig themed parties and my girls loved them. They were good quality plates and I would happily buy them again.

          A good everyday toner

As I have recently reviewed the cleanser of this range I thought I would follow it up with a review of the toner. I have been using this range since my late teens and the fact it has been available for so long shows it must sell well. The product and packaging has been updated several times since I've been using it but it suits my skin really well.

          Cleanse and Tone
I've always followed my use of cleanser with toner as to me it finishes off the job of cleaning my face and neck.
It comes in a decent 200ml bottle which lasts me a few months. The flip top lid is on the top of the bottle has a small hole so even if you knock the bottle over the product you've got a couple of seconds to recover it before it gets everywhere. The bottle is fairly sturdy making it easy to control how much of the toner you dispense.

I apply the toner to a cotton wool pad and then I use it to remove any traces of cleanser and make up. This is similar to rinsing your face with water but the toner is far more gentle on my skin, it is alcohol free which can dry the skin. After I have used the toner my skin is ready for me to apply my moisturiser.
My skin feels clean and fresh after using this and it also has a lovely light fragrance due to it being enriched with grape extract. I use this product morning and night as part of my cleanse, tone and moisturise routine and I really like it.
I also use this product if I want to freshen up my skin during the day, particularly on a hot day as it does a great job at making me feel cool again.

          Price and availability
I usually buy this in Boots, it is currently £3.15 and on buy one get one free. I find this product isn't as widely available as the cleanser and it is quite expensive for what it does.

          Would I recommend?
Yes if you have normal or combination skin then this product is worth a try, it works really well in combination with the cleanser.

A cleansing lotion that is also a great make up remover

I started using this cleanser (or a version of it) when I was in my late teens. I was finding that washing with water was drying out my skin and so I looked for an alternative and found this Garnier cleansing lotion.

          Refreshing cleansing lotion
It comes in a decent 200ml bottle which lasts me a few months. The flip top lid is on the top of the bottle so you have to turn it to get the product out. The bottle is fairly sturdy making it easy to control how much of the lotion you dispense.

I use the lotion on cotton wool pads and it is thick enough to stay on top of the pad. I then use it to remove my make up and clean my face and neck. It claims to remove even waterproof make up and I find that it does this really well without out too much rubbing. I don't often wear much make up but this product copes well when I do, even the waterproof mascara comes off and I've never found that I've needed to use a separate make up remover.

Although this cleanser doesn't leave my skin feeling greasy I use the matching toner to remove any traces of the product and make up. It is suitable for normal to combination skin which mine is and my skin has never had any reaction to it.

My skin feels clean and fresh after using this and it also has a lovely light fragrance due to it being enriched with grape extract.

          Price and availability
I usually buy this in Boots or Tescos, it is currently £3.60 and on buy one get one free in Boots and £3 in Tesco. I find this product really good value for money.

          Would I recommend?
Yes if you have normal or combination skin then this product is worth a try particularly if you are currently having to use a separate make up remover as this one cleanser does it all for you.

          A fun rhyming story

This book was given to one of my 3 year old daughters as a Christmas present at one of the toddler groups that we go to. I'm always happy to see books as presents as both my girls enjoy being read to and I know that they will get plenty of use. Monkey Puzzle is written by Julia Donaldson best known for The Gruffalo but this was our first experience of her work.

The story is about a young Monkey who has lost his Mum and the butterfly who tries to help him find her. Unfortunately for Monkey the butterfly doesn't realise that Monkey's Mum looks like him and so we follow them around the jungle looking in all the wrong places. It's a funny story and so enjoyable to read whilst watching my girls laughing at silly butterfly.

The rhyming style to the book makes it easy to read in a way that entices your child to listen. Both my girls were hooked from the first page as we followed their journey. They both love animals and enjoy pointing them out on the pages. It has become a firm favourite in our house and is regularly chosen at story time.

Our copy of this book is an A4 paperback which means the pages are large enough for both my daughters to see whilst I'm reading to them. Each double spread is fully illustrated by Axel Scheffler and they really bring the book to life.

          Price and availability
This book is currently (January 2014) £4 new or from £2.60 usedon Amazon, if you are a fan on Julia Donaldson you can buy this book as part of a 10 pack from the Book People for £9.99.

          Would I recommend?
Yes, this book is a lovely read and is a firm favourite with my 3 year olds.

A fun but noisy hand held plastic drum

We are the owners of a couple of these Tobar drums, my girls were given them as part of a party for one of their friends who was turning 3. I hadn't seen one since my niece and nephew were little but soon remembered the noise that they made.

          What is it?
A small hand held plastic drum which when twisted between your hands or fingers bounces the small balls which are attached by string onto the drum. The drum part has a lovely smiley face on it making this toy attractive to young children. Ours are both pink plastic which was a winner with my girls.

          In play
Out of the contents of the party bag this item was the most popular. They both needed to be shown how it worked but were soon twisting it to work, or just swinging it around which also had the desired affect of playing the drum which was all they were interested in. 2 of these going make a fair amount of noise, more than you would think at a glance.
My girls have had these for a few months now and they haven't broken which I was half expecting from a cheap plastic toy. We keep them with the other instruments they own and they make a fun addition to music play.

          Price and availability
Free to us as a party bag gift but a quick check on Amazon shows them at 34p plus £2.49 delivery, expensive if you only want one but a good option if you can bulk buy.

          Would I recommend?
Yes, if you can get these at a reasonable price they were a popular party bag gift and one that I would consider putting in party bags in the future. Their purpose is purely to make noise so not one for the parents!

An expensive adventure buggy for Peppa Pig

My girls both enjoy playing with the red Peppa Pig car that they have at one of the toddler groups they go to so I looked around for one for them to have at home. This pink buggy car looked nicer than the red one and I managed to pick up a local collect one from ebay quite cheaply.

          What do you get?
The pink buggy doesn't have a roof so your child can easily see inside where Peppa, her little brother George and Mummy and Daddy pig sit. The characters are fixed into the buggy which I think is a shame as it limits play with the toy. There is a steering wheel in the buggy but again this is fixed in place so can't be played with.
On the bottom is an on/off switch, when turned on the buggy plays a short clip of Peppa Pig music and says a few phrases like 'this is fun' and 'is everybody ready, yes Daddy Pig, then lets go!'
The wheels on the buggy are a decent size and it is easy for a 2 year old to push around even on carpet and is suitable from 18 months.

          In play
Both of my girls, now 3, have enjoyed playing with the buggy and although it doesn't hold their attention for long they do still regularly play with it. The play is limited to pushing it around to 30 seconds or so because there isn't much else to do with it.
Unless turned off it does randomly play the music or phrases to remind you that it is still around. We haven't needed to replace the batteries in the year that we've had it and I expect them to last until we are ready to sell it which I imagine will be in the next year as the girls at 3 are now expecting more of their toys!

          Price and availability
This adventure buggy is currently (January 2014) available from Toys r us for £19.99, I think this is very overpriced and paid less than half this for a second hand one.

          Would I recommend?
Yes, if you can pick one up cheaply as I don't feel it is worth £19.99 due to the limited play that it offers a child.

            Peppa's Campervan for holiday fun

This Peppa Pig Campervan features in the TV series and my girls have always been very taken with it so I thought I would get them one for Christmas. It seemed quite hard to get hold of at a reasonable price when I started looking so tried ebay for a second hand one. I was lucky to get one with all the accessories at a reasonable price.

            What do you get?
The bright yellow Campervan is in 2 parts so your child can lift off the roof and windows to access the seats and storage inside. Included inside were a Peppa, her little brother George and a Mummy and Daddy pig. All the characters have moving arms and legs which allow your child to play with them more than the fixed to a base versions.
To make the campervan complete your child has a few accessories to play with, a shower, fridge, barbecue with food grill, table and the campervan seats are removable to be used as benches with the table.
The roof of the campervan has a canopy that can be moved in and out using a little wheel on the front of the roof. This seems quite delicate and quite a few listed on ebay noted that this part was broken. Ours has so far remained intact.

            Play time?
Both my 3 year olds love this and it is one of the most played with toys from Christmas. It's wheels go round so they can push it along and they will happily sit for ages putting all the characters and accessories in the campervan before setting off with it across the road. Although a decent size it isn't really big enough for 2 children to play with so there have been a few arguments but I'm pleased that they both like it and want to be playing with it.
We have other Peppa Pig sets so other characters have been 'invited' on holiday and this campervan makes a nice addition to our collection.

            Price and availability
This set will cost you around £25 new, it is currently £24.99 at Toys r us which I think is expensive and why I bought second hand. I paid about £15 for mine including postage which I was pleased with.

            Would I recommend?
Yes, this is a fun set which includes all the Pig family which not many of the sets do. There are plenty of opportunities for imaginative play with this toy and I'm glad that I bought it. I'm only knocking one star off because I think it is overpriced.

              Simple and fun educational game

My girls have received a few Orchard Toys games for their last birthdays and Christmas, this 'Spotty dogs' one is the first that we have played. Both my girls enjoy counting and learning their numbers so I was hoping that this counting game would be one that they would both have fun playing whilst learning.

              How does it work?
The game contains a spinner with the numbers 1 to 6 on it and 24 spotty dog cards. The dogs have different numbered spots from 1 to 6 and there are 4 cards for each spot number. You need at least 2 players for this and you play by using the spinner to select a number. Your child once they have their number has to find a dog with that number of spots, with help if necessary! Once they have the card they can turn it over to reveal a dog basket which is either empty or contains 1, 2 or 3 bones. They keep the cards they have won until they are all gone, the player with the most bones is the winner.

              In play
My girls are just over 3 and have really taken to this game. They can play together with supervision to make sure they take turns! The spinner is easy to use when it is laid flat but they do like to try and spin it whilst holding it. They are able to select a dog and count the spots it has to check they've got the right one, they then enjoy turning it over to see how many bones they have. We do get a very sad face from one daughter if her basket is empty but at the moment both seem to be enjoying the game whether they win or not. I'm wondering how long that will last?
The spinner and spotty dog cards are all well made and look like they will withstand plenty of playing. The game is also colourful and clear.

              Price and availability
This game is currently (January 2014) £7.85 on Amazon, I think this is great value and a good price for a birthday gift.

              Would I recommend?
Yes, this game will help improve your child's counting skills and matching numbers to the corresponding number of spots. It is a great first game for children to play together or with an adult, simple and fun. The recommended age is 3-6 years and it is easy enough for 3 year olds to play with some help.

4 Peppa Pig puzzles in a box a great gift for pre school children

My girls were just over 2 last Christmas and as a lot of toys are aged 3+ I bought them some items which they could grow into during the year. They were both getting good at the 2 and 3 piece puzzles which they had so I wanted something that was a bit harder and this set of Peppa Pig 4 puzzles in a box looked a good option for my Peppa mad girls.

              What do you get?
This set contains 4 puzzles which are all the same size (17 x 17cm) they are all made up of different piece sizes. You have a 4 piece, a 6 piece, a 9 piece and a 16 piece all feature a picture from Peppa Pig TV series. The scenes feature Peppa, her little brother George and Daddy pig in the car, Peppa and George with Mummy pig at the computer and a couple of the whole family one in the snow and one on the beach. Miss Rabbit also features in the beach picture.
The pieces are made from sturdy cardboard and although one of the smaller pieces has broken in half the puzzles have been made many times and I've been pleased with the quality.

              In play
Between 2 and a half and 3 years my girls started making these puzzles with me getting one out at a time. First I would help them to fit the pieces together and then once they became familiar with the pictures they started to make them by themselves. Once they could make the 4 piece we moved on to the 6 piece etc. They could easily make the 16 piece puzzle on their own by their 3rd birthday and I was pleased that I didn't wait until they were 3 to let them play with them as they have grown out of them now preferring puzzles with more pieces.
These puzzles were a firm favourite between 2 and a half and 3 years and would be played with most days. I like the interaction that puzzles give me when teaching them how to complete them and it's lovely to see their faces when they complete one on their own for the first time.

              Price and availability
These puzzles are available from Amazon and Argos and will cost you between £4 and £5.99, I do feel puzzles are slightly overpriced but as we get so much use for them they do work out as good value for money.

              Would I recommend?
Yes, these puzzles would make a great stocking filler for a child of around 2 to 3 years. They feature lovely colourful pictures and are a good quality. The range in piece size gives the child a chance to build on their puzzle making skills from one set.

A festive film all about love!

For my 200th review and with the festive season nearly upon us I thought I'd review my favourite Christmas film Love Actually, written and directed by Richard Curtis. Released in 2004 I went to see it at the cinema and loved it and it has been a must see at Christmas time ever since (sometimes in the summer too as 12 months is a long time to wait for Christmas!)

This film has a large cast and many sub plots which keep surprising you with the links between the characters. Friends, family and lovers all relationships are covered within this film which starts with 5 weeks to go until Christmas. The countdown to Christmas continues through the film as we become involved with the characters and how love is affecting their lives. Hugh Grant plays the Prime Minister and his dancing is one of the films many highlights.
The majority of the cast are well known actors and it's great to have so many well known actors in the same film as it's quite unusual in this respect.

Comedy is highly featured in the film with Rowan Atkinson and Kris Marshall my favourites, Rowan Atkinson is only in a couple of scenes but leaves me wishing that he had been featured a bit more. Kris Marshall playing Colin goes to America in search of girls after failing to find love in the UK, he never fails to make me laugh. Colin Firth as Jamie is one of my favourite characters his struggle with the language barrier are great to watch.

Romance is the central to many of the characters and although the film covers only 5 weeks having lots of characters and counting down to Christmas makes this film very absorbing when watched for the first time. I enjoyed it even more once I had watched it a few times and knew how all the characters were connected. Other sides to love are also explored with a sister caring for her mentally ill brother, the grief of losing a partner and the desperation when a partner strays.

With a Christmas theme this film follows Bill Nighy's character trying as a 'has been' to make it to Christmas number one. This involves an appearance from Ant and Dec although the mentioning of Blue as the rivals for Christmas number one does date the film! Kids rehearsing for their Christmas play and a Christmas work do make this film very British and easy to relate to.

I also really love the soundtrack to this film, it has a mixture of artists from Joni Mitchell to the Sugarbabes and includes some Christmas songs. I always get this CD out to listen to Christmas approaches, it is very relaxing and as I know the film so well it is like watching it just listening to the music.

This film is perfect for a girls night in, watching with your partner or on your own with a drink and a pile of Christmas presents to watch. It will make you laugh and possibly cry and will leave you believing that love actually is all around.

Inhalant Decongestant oil for your child to help relieve little blocked noses

Since my girls were babies I had been using Karvol decongestant drops to help them breathe at night when they had colds. When I was running low on this I sadly found that I was unable to find anywhere that sold them so looked at the alternatives and this Olbas Children seemed the most similar, as I recognised the Olbas brand I thought they would be a good choice.

                  What do you get?
The drops come in a 15ml glass bottle with screw top and the instructions for use and the ingredients are printed on both the box and the bottle. The bottle has a plastic dropper top and so it is easy to ensure that you use the correct number of drops. The ingredients are mainly plant oils which vapours provide you with a decongestant.

                  How we use the drops
The instructions state that for babies between 3 months and 2 years 4 drops should be used and for those over 2 years 8 drops should be put on a tissue near but out of reach of your child. I find this works really well and fills the room with vapour fairly quickly, much faster than the plug-in varieties we have tried. I tend to do this before I bath the girls so by the time they go to bed the vapours have filled their room which is only small.
These drops are really effective at clearing little noses so that your child can get to sleep, getting them to sleep has always been the battle for us when they are blocked up with them sleeping okay once they have dropped off. The smell isn't as strong as the Karvol drops but they work just as well which is the important thing.
The drops can also be used for by adding to hot water and inhaling the vapours. Although this is a child product i still find it helpful when I have a cold and I just add them to a tissue which I can breathe in from when I need to.

                  Price and availability
These drops cost around £4 for a 15ml bottle which is really good value for the time they last.

                  Would I recommend?
Yes, these drops are really effective and anything that helps myself and my children to sleep with a blocked up nose is a must have. Personally I find them more effective than the plug in varieties and more cost effective too.
