After seeing trailers for the film and being recommended the book by a friend, I finally gave in and downloaded this onto my Kindle. I started it yesterday and have just finished! The story is set in a ficticious world, where the Capitol controls 12 districts. They are punished every year for a previous uprising and part of this punishment is the Hunger Games. 2 children from each district are chosen each year to play the game - they have to kill each other in order to win more food. The main character is Katniss Evergreen who volunteers herself after her young sister is chosen. She is paired with a boy named Peeta and there is an element of a love story woven through the main story. Peeta is in love with Katniss but it is unclear if she truly feels the same for him. The battle between the children from each district is exciting and intense, I honestly couldn't put this book down and was desperate to get to the end. Some of the descriptions of wounds and hunting etc are pretty gory but nothing detracted from the exciting story line or put me off! The story is aimed at young adults but I still thoroughly enjoyed it! It was easy to read but exciting at the same time and I can see the potential for a VERY exciting film! The ending of the book leaves a few questions, particularly about the relationship between Katniss and Peeta, and I have already downloaded the next 2 books onto my kindle!
I have always loved my hair when it has been straightened at the hairdressers and have never quite managed to achieve the same look at home. So, after much complaining, my boyfriend finally gave in and brought me a pair for Christmas! Although they are quite expensive, they are well worth the money. Previously I had a pair of Mark Hill/Morphy Richards straighteners that were just as expensive (around £90) and they got rid of the frizz but didn't really get rid of those annoying curly bits I have in my hair. It also didn't last. The ghd straighteners are AMAZING! I use mine everyday and find that they don't do as much damage as some of the other straighteners out there. My hair is very coarse and wavy and the ghds manage to smooth all of this out and my hair stays straight all day without any other products. The plates glide through my hair and don't seem to catch so the whole process is quick and pain free!! I have also just learnt how to curl my hair with my ghds! My hair dresser also agrees that ghds are the best straighteners by far and showed me how to do this! You don't need curling tongs anymore, the ghds do it all! Very easy to do, even for a novice like me! I have recently treated myself to another new pair after the cable on mine twisted and I managed to get a set with a hairdryer in as well. The newer versions come with the added safety feature where they turn off after 30 minutes without being used - very handy! They are not as hot as the older ones - this is because ghd had complaints that people were burning their hair - but they still do the job perfectly and I wouldn't trade them in for anything. If you don't have ghds, they are well worth saving up for. I wouldn't use anything else.
I brought this lip balm when it was on offer in Boots for £1.50. Normally I am a Vaseline girl all the way but I was swayed by the bargain and fancied a change! The packaging is quite bright and eye catching, but not something I would normally go for. I likle the screw cap though and this meant that none of the lip balm leaked. Although it says it is a lip balm, I found it quite runny and it felt more like a gloss. I liked this though and it does make my lips look nice! It moisturised my lips really well but I found that after a while it started to dry out and, like many other lip balms, left an odd white layer on my lips - not attractive! The smell of the lip balm is quite nice. It has a menthol/cherry scent which people commented on, in a positive way, when I was standing near them!! It is quite easy to apply to the lips, you just give it a little squeeze and you could apply it straight to your lips. I prefer to squeeze it onto my finger first so I don't apply too much. I also discovered that if you leave it in the car (oops!) it goes hard when it is cold or ridiculously runny when it's hot!! Don't leave it in your pocket in the summer, it just runs out of the tube! I would buy this lip balm again if it was on offer because I liked that it made my lips look glossy, but it wouldn't be my first choice.
I brought this product as a cheap last resort when my current powder (Virgin Vie's face base) had run out and I was waiting for it to arrive! I didn't want to spend loads on an alternative that was only meant to last me for a couple of days but I have to say, this was quite possibly the best £1 I have ever spent!! The packaging of the product is quite simple and it doesn't come with a mirror or a sponge. However, the powder is as good as some of the other more expensive pressed powders on the markets at the moment. It gave an even coverage without looking too powdery and the shade I brought was perfect for my skin tone. I didn't see a wide range of shades though but this could have been because the store had sold so many! I used this powder over a little bit of concealer and my skin looked well covered. I also kept it in my handbag with a sponge and reapplied some later in the day to take off a little bit of shine but generally the powder lasted well and I only had to reapply once during the day. The MUA range consists of a wide range of everyday products, with the most expensive item being around £4! This is perfect for those on a budget or if you fancy trying something different without breaking the bank. I've already invested in a range of lipglosses and eyeliners! I would definitely recommend this product to a friend and already have!
What's not to love about Barry M nail varnishes?! Barry M is a great range of cosmetics and each and every one of the nail varnishes I have tried have been amazing! The range of colours is fantastic - there is something for any outfit! They are all easy to apply and only take 1 or 2 coats much like other (and more expensive) nail varnishes. Removing the nail varnishes are also simple, normal nail varnish remover does the trick and it is no more difficult than other varnishes. I recently brought the limited edition Silver glitter varnish which I absolutely LOVE! Although it is quite deceiving in the bottle - it looks like a complete coat of glitter - when you apply the first coat there isn't that much glitter applied to the nail. It took me 4 coats to get the complete effect. I think this looks amazing and having had Rock Star gel applied to my nails - which is far more expensive - I think this looks just as good. This range of nail varnishes are all fairly cheap, between £2.99 and £3.99, but Barry M often has offers on in Boots or Superdrug. I don't find the nail varnishes last any longer or less than other more pricey nail varnishes, so a must have for me!
I am (unfortunately) one of those people who feels the need to wash my hair every day, which is incredibly time consuming and a very difficult habit to break. Having been recommended this product by so many people and being told off by my hairdresser I felt the need to give in and give a try! The first time I used this product, I wasn't impressed and couldn't understand what the hype was all about! I obviously hadn't read the instructions properly and sprayed the product too close to my hair and ended up with an odd white tinge to my hair! However, after properly reading the instructions (!) I began to see the appeal. My hair looked fresher and I actually managed to resist the temptation to wash my hair the day I used this product properly! It also gave my hair a little bit of a lift when I sprayed it on the roots. The smell of this product is really nice - it has a fresh clean smell. It is also quite cheap, around £2 in Asda at the moment. It saved me loads of time and I am gradually breaking the cycle of washing my hair every day! I liked this product so much I even brought it in a different scent!
I really like this foundation and it is now the one I use on a daily basis! I use the 040 shade Fawn which is perfect for me. I am always looking for make up that covers my uneven skin and completely brought into the advertising for this product! The 'eraser' part sold it to me and I happily parted with my £9.99! When I first used this foundation I found it difficult to blend and ended up with far too much foundation on my face. However, I have since found if I blend it a little with my fingers it looks much better. I understand this defeats the whole point of the applicator tip, but this suits me fine! The foundation is quite light and I find it idea for everyday wear. I usually apply a thin layer and blend into my skin then touch up anywhere I haven't covered. I wouldn't say that this actually 'erasers' all of my problem areas, such as blemishes and uneven skin tone, but it does make a difference and evens my skin out a great deal. I still use a concealer most days but for someone with better skin than me you would only need a light layer of this foundation. I also feel that it is light enough that my skin doesn't feel smothered. My skin actually feels really soft with this foundation and it didn't make any dry patches on my skin go flaky. Having read other reviews I realise the sponge applicator is not particularly hygienic but this foundation suits my skin well and as long as your skin is clean and you replace the lid, I'm sure it would be fine! I did find this foundation didin't last me as long as some others I have used, probably because it doesn't click all the way down and you lose some in the applicator. Overall I would recommend this product, as it works for me!
I brought this body spray a while back, when it came with a free Barry M lip gloss. I actually brought it more for the lip gloss but was pleasantly surprised. The main scent is pink grapefruit with hints of vanilla. The can is slim and ideal to keep in your handbag. The lid also has a sliding close feature, which I find more useful as the cap does't fall off and you can't accidently spray it everywhere!! It looks quite stylish and the scent is suitable for all age groups. The current price for this spray is £1.99 but I recently brought a few Impulse sprays for £1.00 from Asda when they had an offer on. When spraying, it is best to keep the can a fair distance away or you will end up with a slightly wet patch but I found that this spray didn't stain any of my clothes and was suitable for my skin. I found that the scent lasted for about half of the day and I need a quick spritz at lunch time, but you don't need much as it is a fairly strong scent. The can lasted a while but I would probably only buy this scent when it was on offer for £1.00 or even better with a free Barry M lip gloss!
I brought this product with high hopes. It is the go to product for banishing under eye shadows and is always highly rated in magazines. It is quite pricey, around £25, but I decided to treat myself after falling for the hype. Unfortunately I was disappointed. The packaging is really nice and the product itself is well presented but I found it quite difficult to use. The click style dispenser should be really easy but I found that one click was not enough but two clicks was too much! This might sound silly but for the price you pay, you don't really want to waste any! The lid was also quite difficult to put back on without accidently clicking the end! Again, this meant I wasted quite a bit of the product. The product is quite easy to apply and blended fairly well. However, I didn't see a massive difference. Although it made my undereye slightly lighter and I can see why it is described as light reflecting, I wasn't impressed. Also, if you use too much, it can look a little 'caked on' and it becomes obvious that you have tried to conceal under eye shadows. I noticed that there are now more shades available for Touche Eclat and I'm sure that others find that it does the job, but sadly it's not for me. I feel that there are cheaper and more effective products now available.
I LOVE this mascara! I have read mixed reviews about it, but like anything, it depends what you want from a product and how you use it. I really like 'big' lashes but find this look very hard to achieve. I have tried A LOT of other mascaras but have finally settled on this one and it is now a firm favourite and essential to my makeup bag! The tube looks like lots of the other Rimmel mascaras - there is also another mascara in this brand that has the same colour packaging but isn't waterproof. The brush is easy to use and I find the consistency perfect and easy to apply. I always curl my eyelashes and when I apply this mascara, it always keeps my eyelashes 'up.' This is exactly the look I go for so is perfect for me! I also find that they don't move during the day. Some volume and curling mascarsa seem to make my eyelashes droop after a while. I haven't tried the mascara without curling my eyelashes so I don't know what it would be like on its own. I seem to have very fine, and very few, eyelashes and this gives the volume effect I go for. It seems to thicken up my lashes. However, I do have to be quite careful with this as it can make my eyleashed clumpy if I put too much on. I usually use makeup wipes to remove my eye make up but this mascara is a little tough to remove. I guess this is the price I pay for big lashes! Rimmel is a cheap and cheerful brand and this mascara is no exception. I have tried far more expensive mascaras that don't give quite the effect I go fo, so this is a winner for me.
Barry M Instant Nail Effects = Genius! I absolutely LOVE this product! I have been using it constantly since it came out and my nails never look the same twice! The Barry M range of makeup is fairly cheap and this is a must have for great looking nails! It is well worth the money but look out for offers in Boots, as Barry M often have 2 products for a certain amount. I first received this nail polish as a present after my sister had seen it in a magazine and I was dubious to be honest! We tried it on her toenails first, without a base colour, and were really disappointed! However, when we realised how you actually used the product we were amazed!! Instant effects looks exactly like the other nail varnishes in this popular range but the lid shows the crackled effect. It is slightly thicker than other nail varnishs but very easy to apply. Although it does say not to put more than one coat, I have done this (as I'm not very neat!) and it looks fine. The effect appears really quickly - the varnish seems to separate, leaving a crackled effect. I love having a really bright colour underneath in the summer but purples and reds look great too. This effect varnish is available in white, baby blue and baby pink but I prefer the black. I love wearing different and unusual nail varnishes and have spent lots of money on this hobby! Nail foils and visits to the salon are costly and time consuming - Barry M Instant effects is ideal!
How can you live without it?! Vaseline Lip therapy is a must have for any makeup bag or handbag! It is the perfect size to carry around with you and has so many uses. It is the only thing I use to keep my lips mouisturised and I couldn't live without it, particularly in the cold weather. It stops my lips from getting too dry and cracking but if I find this does happen (if I've forgotten the all important Vaseline!) a quick slick and they feel fab again! I also use it under lip stick as a base coat and find it helps to keep my lipstick looking great. It is also really useful for keep your eyebrows neat and tidy and great for patches of dry skin anywhere on your body! You can also use it underneath eye makeup if you have particularly dry skin and it helps to blend your eyeshadow. According to magazines, you can use it to brighten up your eyes without using eyeshadow, but I have never tried this. You can buy Vaseline lip therapy in other 'flavours' but the original has always been my favourite and because it has no scent, my boyfriend can use it too! The sturdy tin packaging is perfect for your handbag because it doesn't get squashed and it is cheap and cheerful. I always keep one in my handbag!
I am a huge fan of cleansing wipes and always like to have a pack handy to keep my face feeling clean and remove makeup! These Tesco wipes come in a nice simple package and are incredibly easy to use with a resealable pack. They are much cheaper than other alternatives available and you can even pick them up during your weekly shop!! I didn't find that the wipes had a particular 'Cucumber' smell but they did smell clean and fresh. They removed my makeup perfectly, including water proof mascara, which many other wipes don't do. They were also very moist which I found helpful when removing mascara, as some other alternatives are too dry and prove ineffective. Having fairly sensitive skin I am always a little dubious about trying new products but these were gentle enough and didn't cause any break outs or sore skin. I haven't used these everyday though. When using around the eyes, just be careful not to get too much of the moisture into your eyes as they can sting a little if you're on the sensitive side.
I received a lovely Nivea gift set that contained Harmony time and Cashmere moments. I am already a big fan of Nivea products but don't buy them often as they are sometimes a little more expensive for someone on a budget. The shower cream had a smooth, creamy texture and a light floral smell. I usually like my shower gels to smell quite girly and this is definitely not one for the boys!! The scent didn't remain on my skin for very long afterwards though. When I used the product on its own, it lathered really well and with a loofah it was fantastic! I only needed a really small amount. This meant that the bottle lasted quite a long time. Nivea tends to be a great range for my skin and this shower cream is no exception. It left my skin soft and didn't irritate my sensitive skin. The packaging says it contains almond milk and this felt really nice on my skin, particularly on my legs which tend to be dry. I also used this product after shaving and found it helped to keep my skin moisturised. The packaging is simple but eye catching and has an easy to use flip lid - none of those fussy screw tops that are difficult to undo with wet hands! The whole range of these Nivea shower creams are nicely presented. I would buy this product again if it was on special offer, the RRP was £2.49 which is a little above what I would normally pay for an everyday shower cream, but it did make a fantastic present! Larger supermarkets often have this brand on special offer. I would definitely recommend this product to a friend!
