An excellent affordable business phone which looks great and performs tasks well

I needed a new business phone and I didn't have the desire to fork out the money for a blackberry nor an iPhone and since I've been a nokia boy all my life I turned my attention to Nokia's new business range and I am glad I did. First off the phone is pretty big but it still fits in my jacket pocket or my trousers and jeans quite comfortably and it is not that chunky. The QWERTY keyboard is excellent and the keys are a good size and are raised which helps you when texting. The screen is nice and big which is useful when surfing the internet, sending an email or reading texts. The menu is simple to navigate and there are some useful applications like a conversion programme for currency or weights and a calculator.

You can also open and edit microsoft word, excel and powerpoint progammes but it can be quite difficult and frustrating since the programme is only basic. The phone also has a 2MP camera which while basic can be useful but the thing which most surprised me about this mobile was the torch, though it looks very tiny on the back of the mobile it produces a lot of light which is great. The phone has a big battery while helps as it can stay on for long periods of time without having to recharge.

Connectivity isn't a problem either as the phone has bluetooth and wifi which is great if I need to send emails or documents to other people. There is also a 3.5mm jack for connecting earphones if you wish to listen to music. Most importantly for me is that sending texts and receiving calls is easy on this thing and the loudspeaker is clear and loud. Although it might not be as advanced as a blackberry for a business phone it is excellent value for money and does what it needs.

Want a full HD 42" plasma tv? This is the one to get.

Bought this baby after my 10 year old 26" Sony broke and frankly its amazing. Since I hadn't bought a new TV in a long time I did quite a lot of research into what TV would give me most bang for my buck. All I knew was that it had to be big and be able to produce a great image. My first port of call was to decide whether it should be a LCD or Plasma TV. There seems to be a huge debate over which is better and from my research and experience the plasma seems to come out on top. There seems to be less motion blur when it comes to fast moving objects and dark colours seem to be more accurate and produce a 'true-black' colour. The LCD pictures seemed to be lighter and brighter colours were produced more vibrantly.

When I visited the Panasonic shop the man basically said that if you're getting a 42inch+ size TV plasma was the way forward as the LCD quality goes down hill from that size where as at 39" LCD seemed to have the upper hand when it came to picture quality. LCD's also use up less power and a plasma TV can sometimes have image scarring where if you leave a static image displaying on the TV it can scar into the background of TV when watching but to do this you would have to leave a static image on for 12 hours or more (who does that?)

My brother seemed adamant that the 39" LCD was better but I believed the 42" plasma had the edge. Needless to say he bought the LCD and I the plasma. I know I got the better deal. The picture quality is awesome, no motion blur what so ever, colours are represented accurately and dark colours and shade remain dark. It is a Full HD 1080p TV which is really only beneficial if you watch a lot of HD TV channels, own a games console or watch blu ray's, some say that more and more HD channels will be emerging and a 1080p Full HD picture does produce the best picture possible but you won't be missing out if you decide to save yourself some cash and not go Full HD. 3 HDMI ports for great connectivity and you can connect your camera or laptop to the TV as well. I was worried about the size of the TV and that it might be too big. But it fits very nicely in my 8m x 4m room and makes the room look like a modern 21st century living room. Big is certainly better.

A great value for money watch which tells the time perfectly but does not provide extra features

I am sure everyone knows of Casio's reputation when it comes to watches. They are known for their reliability and their precise time keeping. No difference with this watch either. It is Casio's most basic analogue watch. Made for those looking for a no thrills accurate and well made time piece. As per usual it uses a Japanese Quartz movement meaning it loses/gains only 30 seconds every month, very accurate for the price. Moreover the glass which protects the face is a mineral crystal glass which is much stronger compared to similar priced unbranded watches and it helps prevent scratches. The face itself is nice and large and the black hands and digits stand out well making it very easy for the wearer to tell the time. The watch strap is made of rubber resin which makes it quite durable while the watch case is made of plastic with a stainless steel back which means if you accidentally drop or scrape the watch it will carry on working perfectly. The strap is length adjustable so that it will fit a variety of wrist sizes and it is secured comfortably by a standard buckle fastening. What's great is that Casio state that the battery in the watch will last 3 years, this is quite true, but the watch strap on the other hand tends to break after 1 year (and it is not covered by Casio's standard 2 year warranty). The watch is not the most attractive time piece out there but it is certainly reliable and most importantly very accurate when displaying the time. It is a simple and reliable time piece made by a manufacturer which always offers great value for money.

Excellent value for money, you probably won't find a camera with better picture quality under £120

As a frequent concert goer I needed a new digital camera and it needed to be able to take great quality pictures while also fitting in my pocket. This Samsung digital camera is perfect for both these roles and is great value for money. This 10 mega pixel camera (one of only a few cameras at 10 MP at its price) produces excellent photo's. The camera has a standard flash and the optical zoom is pretty good. The buttons are well placed and easy to use, it is pretty obvious what button does what and there is nothing to complicated. What the picture doesn't show you is the digital screen on the back of camera which is pretty large which is very useful. The menu is simple to use and it is very easy to alter options like the flash or to switch to video recording. The face detection and digital image stabilisation are good additions although not crucial. The only problem I have with the camera is that it can drain batteries quite quickly, especially if you have the flash on, but then again what camera doesn't? Also sometimes the camera is unable to focus properly and can blur the image but generally it is pretty good at auto-focusing on an object. I used this camera when I went trekking in Morocco and it produced some incredible images. The pictures were well focused and the colours produced were vibrant including the different shadow effects. What is even more impressive is that I would be taking pictures of mountain ranges tens of kilometers away and the images which came from the camera were as good as some of those who had more expensive digital cameras. If you are looking for a portable camera which produces great quality pictures while being very affordable (bought mine for £60) then this is it.

Highly recommended music player and entertainment device, you won't want to put this down!

Having spent a long time deciding whether or not to buy a Nokia music phone or an iPod Touch I decided on this little beauty, and I'm glad I did. It has provided me with hours of entertainment. The ipod's touch screen is brilliant, it is very responsive to touch, the quality of the graphics and images produced are amazing and best of all it is nice and large. The ipod is just the right size to make it portable while not being too small ensuring you can view pictures and videos properly. The ipod is designed to provide portable music and it does this very well, the quality of the sound produced is very high. The menu is easy to navigate and very quick to respond to touch, app's open pretty much instantly. The Wi-Fi feature is very useful and having a built in browser means I can surf the internet quite comfortably while lieing in bed. The greatest thing about this iPod is the Apple App store. Hundreds of thousands of apps to choose from, whether you want to spend some time gaming or learn a new language the app store has it. The only problem is you will find youself spending a lot of money on apps as they are just too irresistable. The cameras are a useful added feature although not ground breaking, the picture quality isn't that great but the HD video recording makes up for that. The cameras are great for those social networking or wanting to upload pictures to emails. If you buy this ipod you will definitely want to invest in a case as the shiny back scratches badly. The only obvious problem I have with the ipod is the battery length. Because the ipod can now multi-task (yay!) its battery depletes very quickly if listening to music and playing games and you might only end up being able to use it for 5-6 hours. It can help if you turn off wifi and turn down the brightness of the screen. All in the all this ipod provides a great deal of entertainment by being able to store a large amount of music and a number of useful app's (huge library of games to choose from). If you're trying to decide between the 8GB touch or 32GB it depends on your music collection, in general app's don't take up much space and you find yourself deleting the ones which no longer interest you. If you're going to buy an ipod or music player this xmas this is the one for sure.

If you are looking for the smallest music player possible with a touch screen then this is it

I've owned numerous ipods and love their simplicity and portability and this is what makes the ipod so great, particularly the nano. Eager to try the new nano I bought one off Amazon the minute it came out. As usual the new nano is good looking and the menu is easy to use. Most importantly though the music quality is top notch and the touch screen is very responsive which means accessing your music couldn't be simpler. It also has some useful extra features like the 'voice-over' where the voice over tells you the name of the song and artist and with a swipe of the finger you can change the song without looking at the screen, pretty cool huh. The battery length is ok, quite good if you consider the size of this thing, you'll get about 10 hours of listening from it. Futhermore the 8gb memory is quite generous and will hold a good collection of music. Now for the bad. It only has a 1.5 inch screen so if your eyesight ain't so good or you don't like staring at small text then you'll want a larger ipod. Moreover since it is so small I kept on losing the thing and it can be quite fiddly at times to operate. This ipod also doesn't let you view videos which isn't good if you're a TV or film buff. The thing which really bugged me though was the price (around £120), for an extra £40 you can pick up an ipod touch which has a larger screen, applications and so many more useful features. If you wanted you could also get the 5th generation nano which is probably better value for money. Its a nice ipod and does what it states well but in terms of value for money, which is really important in this economic climate, it falls down compared to the other ipod ranges.

Easy site to use, excellent prices and good service, recommended to all

        PLAY.com - Lets PLAY on!

For me PLAY.com seems relatively new since most of the music, games and DVD's I get are off Amazon, but having seen one of PLAY.com's adverts I was intrigued in how they could compete with some of the great prices and services which Amazon offer, and I must say PLAY.com do compare well.

PLAY.com are a Jersey based retailer and have been around since 1998 and one of the reasons that they are so popular in the UK is because of how they don't have to pay VAT on goods under £18 (so helping save the consumer a bit of extra cash). So when it comes down to it for DVD's, music (MP3 downloads (DRM free) available and CD's) and games PLAY.com seem slightly cheaper than Amazon's prices. What's more ALL of Play.com's items come with FREE first class postage and whenever I've ordered from them the item seems to come next day.

Now although PLAY.com offer a lot of items they seem to be mainly based around electronics so if your looking for other such presents I doubt you'll find them on PLAY. Also I've found the customer service from PLAY to be lacking occasionally, they never answer their email address and calling their number can be expensive and most of the time your put on hold for a couple of minutes but other than that it is fairly good.

The biggest plus I've seen from PLAY though is PlayTrade. Where ordinary people can list their items to sell on Play.com, the commission rate which they charge is less than Amazon at 10% and 50p (but they charge you a further 5% if you decide to withdraw your money to a bank rather than spending it in the PLAY store). When I've listed any items on the PLAY website they seem to sell relatively quickly, this is because of how it is mainly a specialist website based around electronics and that European customers are also directed to the PLAY site so more people see your item on offer, but the only problem with free postage is that you have to offer it to European customers which can cost a bit extra.

All in all my dealings with PLAY have gone pretty well and I've also been able to make a bit of extra cash off PlayTrade, so I'd recommend the site to anyone whose got any electronics to sell or anyone looking for some decent bargains.

If your looking to shop online, do it here.

Well ever since I can remember using online shopping it has always been with Amazon, most of the time I'd have to go through my brother to get what I needed but with age comes power and since I've had my own debit card I've been buying loads more online rather than visiting shops.

Cardiff is a fairly busy place with a population of around 300,000 but then you have to remember the rest of Wales is less sophisticated so a lot more come to the City Centre to shop. Nowadays if you wanted to go shopping it takes from my house (2 miles form the Centre of Town) 30minutes to walk or 10 minutes to bus and by the time you've gone and got what you've wanted and come back it might have taken you a good 2 hours and time really feels wasted, the centre is constantly busy and shops are consistently crowded, I'm sure those who live in busy cities experience this if not to a worse effect.

So with what little time I have in between hobbies and AS studies I decided to buy my Xmas presents of Amazon, and now I can say, no regret what so ever.

The website is simple and easy to use; they feature not only items they stock but other people's items. The catalogue is huge ranging from the latest electronics to gardening equipment. They offer some of the best prices around and thanks to Amazon Marketplace other sellers can list there, though it is quite expensive at 86p and 17.25 % of the items price. What's more there are a lot of decent reviews about products on Amazon to help guide the consumer.

One my favourite categories Amazon offer now are the MP3 downloads, cheap music at around 59p which does not come DRM locked - way better than itunes. But if you just look around your bound to find what you want, they sell virtually everything.

So having quickly and easily browsed through their website picked out the items I wanted thanks to some helpful reviews I proceeded to the checkout. You have a choice whether or not you want to gift wrap your item, so I thought since its Christmas I can splash out an extra 3.95. The postage costs on some of the items can be a surprise but you have the choice to choose from free super saver delivery (Takes a while, up to week) First Class, or special delivery, but those who are part of Amazon prime can select special delivery free of charge (Costs 49 pounds a year). Sadly I couldn't have all my presents specially wrapped so some people would have to make do with my shoddy attempt at wrapping. After confirming my details and paying everything was sorted, all done within 30minutes from the comfort of my home.

2 Days later my items turned up well packaged (especially those gift wrapped) and exactly as described and everyone was happy.

One of the great things Amazon offer are those who create their own music, books and art to list on their site, they offer a good rate and you can even get money off some of Amazon's similar items.

The only bad thing I can think about Amazon is that some have been scammed when buying off others on Amazon Marketplace through fake emails asking the customer to purchase through an unsecure website; also it was possible to buy on Amazon Germany dangerous items like pepper spray and tear gas all advertised under the Amazon banner.
While I would advise though looking to do some easy shopping to check out Amazon I would also similarly advise you to be slightly wearier if buying off Amazon Marketplace, but then again I've never had a problem.

            Buy it!

DeVotchKa - How it Ends (Track) (Used on GoW 2 Trailer)

Most people have probably never heard of the music band DeVotchKa let alone their song 'How it Ends' but when I tell you this song is used on the Gears of War 2 Trailer for the Xbox 360 it should make you slightly intrigued. After all the GoW trailers are generally known for their depressing yet melodic songs.

DeVotchKa are a unique band, they are a four piece instrumental and vocal ensemble that uses many different styles of music (in particular eastern European) and fuses it with American folk/punk.

DeVotchKa actually means 'young girl' taken from the language of 'Nadsat' (English Russian fuse of language)

The groups are now based in Denver Colorado and the members include: Nick Urata, Tom Hagerman, Jeanie Schroder and Shawn King, all can sing and play a variety of instruments which include: Guitars, trumpets pianos, percussion, double bass, violin, accordion, just to name a few.

But I haven't just written this to talk about the band but probably their best song 'How it Ends'. The song mainly talks about inevitability and destiny, the destiny which you already know will happen, and that you know 'How it ends'.

The song features a basic repeating keyboard and piano tune (sounds typically depressing) with an accordion over lapping it, again with a repeating track. There aren't any fancy solo's nor is the music used sound particularly advanced or impressing, but it's just something about the vocals and lyrics, you don't listen to the tune but to those sad and depressing vocals which catches the listeners attention.

The chorus is breathtaking using a combination of percussion and violin crescendos inter mixed with the vocals which are constantly changing tone and pitch.

While you listen to the song it really makes you reflect on sad and woeful things as though all the bad actions in your life have been 'inevitable'. But why would you listen to a sad tune, personally I think the strongest emotion brought out by the song is that of hope, a shining beacon in the darkness, and that you will try everything to correct your wrong doings and bad happenings, but you know... 'How it ends'.

This song caters for everyone, whether you like rap, pop or rock. It is simply such a beautiful song with so many hidden messages. I'd advise all who read this to at least have a listen, simply go to YouTube and type DeVotchKa How it ends; this is one track that won't be ending any time soon.

Although their other tracks are not as good, this one certainly stands out and is 100% worth buying as a single.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

If you want to watch HD TV its great but there are other packages you should look at

Virgin V Plus Box - Attempts to catch up to Sky domination? Seems to be working

Been with Virgin (NTL before taken over) for a few years now. The biggest problems we've been having with them are that the box used to keep freezing and crashing however this new V plus box seems to of solved all that. The V plus box is an attempt made by Virgin to attract more TV customers and it seems to be working. I always kept bugging my dad for us to switch to sky but now I can't really see the point. The only reason I wanted to switch to sky was to get sky 1, sky sports and sky movies but with Virgin I can now get those anyway, nowadays there seems to be very little difference between the channels you get with sky and the ones with virgin.

The biggest pluses (get the pun? Eh?) You get with the V plus box is that it gives you the ability to watch certain channels in High definition (BBC HD etc.s), the picture is far superior to standard definition. The box also safeguards you from the digital switch over. One of the most important aspects of the box is that it has 80GB storage capacity which allows you to record multiple programs (3 at a time) to the hard drive then rewatch them anytime. Virgin also give you a number of channels which you can watch when signing up (depends what package you get) but there is a lot of variety. Virgin also give you extras like watching TV on demand (some of the best episodes of TV programs they have selected) and you rent movies, as well as playing games and other activities through your Virgin box.

The biggest choice consumers face is free view, Virgin or Sky. Well if you want HD TV or a recording device other than a DVD or VHS recorder then it has to be either Virgin or Sky, it simply comes down to personal preference then, both offer very similar services. But if you're not too bothered about extra TV programs a good free view box is all that you need and it still offers a lot of channels. But for me Virgin is great.

Can't go wrong here if your looking for a big TV for gaming or otherwise

Panasonic 42 Inch Plasma - Live without it? What life!

Well we needed a new TV since our 14 year old Sony 20inch seemed to be dieing and so we began the long an arduous journey of 'Time for a new TV'. It took a while to decide whether to get an LCD or Plasma and well having gone everywhere, literally, I'm glad to have the plasma (Dark colours look better and no blurring, unlike a lot of LCD's). Also we were set on getting a 42inch because with all the lads round playing Guitar Hero World Tour we couldn't have anything less. So eventually after we went to the Panasonic store in Newport to check out their best we decided on what we wanted.
Shock! My dad went out and got a 37inch LCD (He tried arguing with the man in the store LCD was better, he got shot down). But we still managed to fork out enough money between me and my brother to get the super Panasonic 42inch Plasma, Full HD 1080p, and well, what a beast of a TV. Picture quality is amazing way better then the 37inch LCD, dark colours look great and there is no blurring whatsoever. Playing games on the 42inch screen is epic, you have to turn your head to see corners of the screen (well only if your as close to the screen as me) and with 1080p full HD some TV programs look dead realistic, as though your actually seeing it with your own eyes.

If you're looking for a big TV 42inch + GET a Panasonic Plasma, it is the best TV. Looks great, visuals are amazing.

One of the best if you need broadband

Virgin Broadband - Best broadband provider around, but only because of speed

First off I've been a customer of NTL (former broadband provider before Virgin took them over), so I've been with 'Virgin' a number of years now. They claim there optical fibre broadband is the fastest out therefore the regular consumer, well when their offering 50meg for 80 pounds it definitely is. However Virgin are were of the con-artists out there who 'advertise' super-fast speeds but don't always deliver, but they re improving. Currently I'm on their 10meg package and that seems to work fairly well, with most the time the speed at the advertised price. The one thing I have definitely noticed with Virgin is that if you phone up, complain and say you want to be disconnected, you can generally get them to shave some cash off your monthly bill, always useful. Also so far with the new modem I'm yet to experience a problem and the one time the modem did malfunction an engineer was round the next day to fix it.

I have to recommend Virgin broadband simply because of the speeds advertised at the cost, the generally good customer service but most of all because you can haggle down their prices.

Nokia 6230i - One of the best and cheapest phones to get now

The Nokia 6230i has it all, Bluetooth, radio, infrared, games, music, memory card, easy to use, internet workers and a decent 1.3 megapixel camera.

So when I tell you, that you can pick this phone up 2nd hand off eBay for 25 pounds (new won't cost much extra), you should be jumping off your seat looking for one right now (But only if the money is tight and you want a phone which does everything but costs virtually nothing).

So now in the present when there are loads of devices featuring Bluetooth and that the internet on your mobile is cheaper than ever and easier to access this is the phone to get for virtually nothing. The display isn't very bright or vibrant in colours and though the camera lacks in quality it does its job. The phone is well built and fairly reliable (expect anything less of Nokia?). Cosmetic looks are also not bad, no visible aerial, nor does it look like a brick. This phone does pretty much everything a phone does now (might be little slower and not as flashier, but still does it regardless), so grab yourself a bargain phone at a meagre price.

If you wanted a phone which had everything but didn't want to spend much get this one.

Nokia 6230 - Good in the day

The Nokia 6230 was my third phone, and what a phone it was in the day (4 years ago), cost 250 pounds but it was the best money could buy at the time and it truly as great, but looking back in time now, thanks to hindsight, I think it was a waste of money when comparing to today's technical miracles. I didn't need Bluetooth or the internet on the phone (both were pretty redundant and poor) and the camera was of low quality, didn't even make 1megapixel. Games on the phone were published infrequently, cost too much and were frankly, rubbish. The radio however did come in use (but you needed the nokia headset) and the upgradeable memory card allowed me to put some of my MP3's and custom tones on, so not all features were wasted.

So when I tell you, that you can pick this phone up 2nd hand off eBay for 15 pounds (new won't cost much extra), you should be jumping off your seat looking for one right now (But only if the money is tight and you want a phone which does everything but costs virtually nothing).

The only thing I really used the phone for was texting and calling friends and family and it does this very well, easy to use software for texting, changing settings etc. and the call quality is quite good and even features a speaker phone.

If this phone is something you might be interested in but you wanted the 'whole package' then maybe the Nokia 6230i version will keep you interested, same a this phone but features a 1.3 mega pixel camera. Everything you need.

                Can't go wrong here

iPod Nano 3rd Generation 8GB - So much joy from something so small

iPods are the latest fashion for those wanting quick and easy access to music of their choice at affordable prices. Since the first iPod from Apple came out people having been fixated on them. I remember the days of the portable disc player, hauling a massive disc player which couldn't fit in your pocket, and that's before you have to carry the discs round which had a habit of getting damaged, especially when on the move. Now that the iPod has come along it makes all the problems of the disc player like size and portability thing of the past. With the ability to hold thousands of songs, videos, games, images and other applications on such a small device it is extremely appealing to all.

The Nano has 8GB of memory which is enough for about 2000 songs which is good enough for me but the only problem I have is that the wheel used to change songs etc. is too small for me and I sometimes find it hard. I'd advise for men to upgrade to a bigger iPod (Bigger is better?). You can also get a range of coloured iPods but I'd go for a black one as some of the lighter coloured ones mark easier, however the screen and back cover are still fairly strong.

The sound quality is fairly strong aswell being that you can tweak numerous settings like bass etc. Sadly though if you don't want to always use your headphones you need to invest in some speakers but the sound quality does degrade slightly.

As with all iPods though I advise getting a case to protect it (It's quite delicate) a cleaning cloth and a wall charger. Also the headphones which come with the iPod are generally of poor quality so you should invest some money so you can get a good pair.

The iPod Nano 3rd G is no different from its predecessors in terms of ease of application, it is still as easy to carry around and what's more on its 2inch screen you can view images and watch videos, also there is the new way you can flick between albums with the album flow (where it lines all the album covers up and you can just flick between them)

But of course all this is great but if the software on the iPod is poor what's the point? Well Apple has succeeded here again with iTunes. They make it so simple and easy to download songs, videos, games and movies. On itunes there are literally millions of songs and videos to choose from. Also now you can buy new games and applications for your iPod. It's easy to synchronise your iPod to your itunes download everything you have bought off itunes onto your iPod.

The only gripes I have with itunes is that music bought comes DRM encrypted which means you can't copy it onto another device without unlocking it via software off the internet. Also at 79p a song it's quite expensive and if you want a music library with thousands of songs it's going to set you back quite a bit. However when you balance up the costs and the ease and efficiency of using itunes it is worth it.

I think if you're looking for a new MP3 player you can't really go wrong here but beware of hidden costs and what it might cost you after if you get a new device after this one.
