To anyone who still just listens to local radio or Radio 1 in the car or at home, then the world of digital radio must seem quite a mystery. So many stations that you hear about, but no way to hear them.
You might listen on a cable TV service, but who wants to sit in front of the tv to listen to radio?
I would definately recommend looking to digital as it will almost certainly have so much more content to suit you. The 5 FM BBC radio stations are fine, but have a very general outlook, and have to appeal to a vast number of people. The specialised digital radio stations are great. I would say the cost of this Pure Digial radio is well worth it just to be able to listen to BBC Radio 6Music. Great presenters, who all know their stuff, playing great quality music.
The radio itself is great - very easy to set up and no 'tuning' in the traditional sense, you just switch between stations.
Good quality sound too.
I bought this book to read on holiday without too much research. I have always been interested in Russia and politics and the situation since the fall of the Berlin wall and the end of communism twenty years ago. The initial spark that appeared to be promoting democracy and openness and engagement with the west seemed to falter and the situation we have now is far from the promise shown all that time ago.
The book covers the real life events of a journalist who was covering Russia and Russian politics recently. He moves to Moscow with his family and goes about his normal business and work as a journalist, but all starts to not be as it should when he begins to get attention from the authorities.
The author researches a number of stories and meets up with various people around Russia and gets increasingly monitored in both obvious and less obvious ways.
I won't give too much away, but it is very engaging and interesting to anyone who has followed politics in the last 20 years. Well written.
You've read all the moral panic in the Daily Mail about this series of games, and how anyone playing them will immediate start out on a crime spree across their towns, and civilisation will come to an end shortly after.
I think I may have been playing it wrong, as I have continued to lead a normal family life, so can only discuss and review on this basis. If you are someone who copies everything you see in a game, then maybe think twice
Otherwise, this is a really fun game for the PS2, and being a bit older means you can pick up a copy used for much less than the newer games.
I bought this after reading reviews that said it was one of the top game for the ps2. And they were right. Great storyline, gameplay and tasks within the game. It's huge and you can take ages driving around and exploring the city and space around it.
If you've watched breaking bad, then you can probably really get in to the story of this too.
This is a great starter hand held game system for kids, especially younger ones. Ours got theirs when they were still the latest thing in the shops but they have since been replaced by the 3ds, which is very similar, and has mixed reviews due to the 3d aspect and how some children see it.
There is no reason no to look for a used one of these, as they seem pretty robust, so will still be in good condition. If not, then there are plenty out there, so just move on to look for another.
You can even buy replacement cases to get a brand new look or to change the colour. Pretty easy to do too.
Another great thing about this being a little older is that there are loads of games out there and being used you can get them really cheaply - such as a few pounds each.
Perfect size for being on the move whether in the car or to take in a bag for when you are waiting around - airports etc.
If you have played on games consoles over the years, then this may take a little getting used to as it is quite a difference concept.
We bought this as a gift for the children before we had even tried one out or seen one being played. However, we knew from the games available and reports from other friends children that it would be very much appreciated and enjoyed.
Great selection of games - there really is something for everyone from children to grandparents. The fact that you are on your feet to play makes it seem much more interactive, and not like sitting hunched over a screen as is the usual worry about giving children consoles!
Whether you think it's your thing or not - I recommend getting Let's Dance - it's great fun and will have everyone laughing in no time at all - great for family occasions as people that are usually a bit more reserved can't help but get involved.
I am writing this review after this camera failed, but I would still recommend it and will be replacing it by buying another one. Let me explain.
We bought this camera quite a while ago as it was good quality and sturdy looking, and not too expensive for a good brand. The reviews we read were good, so we went for it and got it in time for our hols.
It has travelled to many places with us, and I have to say, has not always had the easiest life as we have three children who love to have a go with it too. It has stood up admirably to this! It's been used on the beach, in the rain, and every other place you can think that you would not normally use your camera. Recently there is a problem with the screen and it's just mainly black, so it may have died, but it has had a hard life.
I think other cameras would have been finished long before this one!
First off, I have to say that this little MP3 player does far more than just playing music. It has all kinds of features that extend from putting you digital camera pics on to it, to playing video clips etc. Having said all that, I only wanted an MP3 player to connect up to the car stereo, so that is the basis that I bought it and judged it. That is also the only real experience I have of it, so I will just focus on that for this review.
Overall I like it - it looks good, it is well made and good quality and still looks new, which is worth mentioning. The screen is clear and bright, and the menu for selecting music is clear and easy to work with. I used it to sync with napster to keep music on and play later in the car. You have to sync once a month to keep the napster music live.
The sound is good, and it connects easily to the car, which is perfect for me. The only downside is battery life, but so long as you get a car charger, this is not a big problem.
I bought this when I was not even really looking for a kettle. That might sound a little strange, but it caught my eye and when I saw the price I bought it straight away.
Now there is nothing wrong with it to use in the kitchen - it's clean looking and works well, boiling quite fast, and has good capacity. In our kitchen I prefer a stainless steel kettle as it looks a bit smarter and better quality, so what was the point of buying this you may well ask.
I bought it for the garage! Our garage is a good size, and when working on the car, or bike or whatever I have been tasked to repair or renovate, it can be a pain to go back in to the house, especially if the house is locked up if I am the only one at home and lock up when I go out to the garage.
So it now lives in the garage and provides a nice cup of tea when I am taking a break to work out why something still doesn't work, or to admire my handiwork if it does!
I bought this as a gift for my partner a few years ago shortly after the ipad2 had newly come out.
It's great. Even after having a go on the new ipads that have come out since then, I would say to seriously look at buying an ipad2 rather than a newer one, as you will make a good saving, and the features are just as good.
It's perfect for web use, or for playing games such as Minecraft for the kids (though only plays the mobile/lite version of the game, which is worth bearing in mind).
Actually, if you are buying a newer ipad for yourself, I'd say get an old one for the kids, otherwise you will quickly lose your new toy to them. If you get them an older one, you won't be as sad when it gets scratched and fingerprints all over!.
There are plenty of places to buy these now, from second hand shops to ebay so there is no need to overpay, as supply is plentiful.
I'm not an expert photographer, or that into cameras, so when I came to change for a newer one I didn't want to spend a fortune, or to take a long time to read up on all the latest chat on which is best and what features to look for.
Firstly there are loads of cheaper cameras around but I wanted to go for a brand I could trust, so picked Samsung. Also, I liked that it looked bright and fresh, rather than the more common black or silver ones.
It is small enough to easily fit in a pocket or bag if you are out and about or going on holiday.
The picture quality is really good, and was markedly better than my previous camera from around 5 years ago. In some ways I wish I'd changed cameras sooner now as this is so much better than the last camera that cost the same 5 years ago.
You won't be disappointed.
Might as well get this out of the way, this is not a iphone. Many people start from the position of wanting or even needing! an iphone, but see the cost and work downwards from there until they find something they can afford.
In fact, this is a pretty sensible way to do things, so it's not a criticism, just the way things go.
From that point of view, I can't say this is the best phone in the world in every regard, but it is a really good phone.
It does all the smartphone stuff you need, and its the only phone I've had where the screen hasn't broken, so this is a massive plus for me.
Surprisingly the sound is really good, so if you listen to music on your phone then this is a great feature, as you can get streaming music, or mp3 files, or the radio.
Great phone, there is nothing I would complain about. I'd happily have another in the future.
When we were considering this item, the thing I could not help come back to was what the real purpose of it was. Let's be clear about this, if it is just for when you want some toast from time to time at home, then this may well be overkill. There are many toasters out there that are much much cheap. There are some that look quite stylish in their own was and are still cheaper.
However if you have a large family and enjoy making toast as a main part of your regular breakfast, then this does start to make a bit more sense. The variability of the thickness is ideal for the irregular width of home made and home cut bread (I've never been able to produce regimented same-sized slices!).
Being able to do four slices at a time is really useful too.
I would imagine this would be a good buy for a B&B too for this reason.
If you have the spare money and want a stylish looking well designed item, then this is right for you. It will be making toast longer after the cheaper ones have been binned!
We had an old Dyson for many years which eventually broke. We decided a brand new Dyson was more than we could afford at the time, so we went to Tesco and bought a VAX that was on offer of half price, and so was £50. We thought that in the 10 years, other cleaners would have caught up and been as good as Dyson.
We were very wrong. The VAX was rubbish and just simply did not do the required job. It was a waste of time and money. It took ages to clean, and even then didn't do a good job. It finally broke after a few months and we were back to stage 1 of needing another hoover.
We spotted on of these at a local second hand shop and went to look at it. We offered £35 and bought it. It turns out to have been the very best £35 I have ever spent. It is easy to use, very strong suction, cleans thoroughly and without needing to clean it out all the time like the VAX.
I would recommend this to anyone. If you are wondering if second hand Dysons are not worth looking at, I can report that ours is amazing!
We bought a Silver VW Passat from a garage that had used it as their lending car for customers whilst their car was being serviced. As such, it had been kept in good order by the garage, and looked good in silver.
It's quite fast, thought we aren't really boy-racers. Feels solid and safe which is perfect for a family car. In normal driving it does around 35mpg at best, and probably drops to around 30mpg is driven around town, or if you are in a bit more of a hurry (often the case for families!).
Plenty of room inside, even for a tall driver.
Even though it's an older car, it still looks good, rather than some cars that easily turn in to looking like old bangers after a few years.
So far been reliable in last 12 months. Passed MOT for under £100 which is good for an older car I think.
I would be happy to buy another, but would look for the diesel engine and the estate bodyshape. Other than that, it is a good car.
We looked at various options when looking to buy a pair of boots for our daughter for those winter days when it is not wet, but just dry and cold. Wellies are not ideal as the often let quite a bit of cold in unless they are insulated.
We checked the very cheap 'copies' of Ugg boots, but friends reported that their kids wore them out quite quickly and the soles are made of cheap foam, so best avoided.
We decided to look for a pair of these genuine UGGs and wait until they were on offer to buy. When we found a pair we loved them! The quality is clear to see and they should last for a long time. They look great, and they are SO warm and comfortable that it's quite a job to get them off her feet now! Also they are good as they are easy to put on and take off without help from anyone.
Would recommend these, and will certainly replace when they are outgrown.
