The jewel of the South coast? Well, not quite - but it's not as bad as most people probably believe. Once a bustling port - when the only way to move things was over the water - Southampton still owes a lot of it's character to the sea. There is an annual Maritime festival and some large ships, like the QE2 and the Oreana still set sail from the city as well as this there is still quite a bit of container freight. The people of Southampton are generally a good natured bunch - and in recent years the social atmosphere of the city has improved significantly. There are many more down-town pubs - mostly from national chains - and there are nice restaurants to be found especially in the area of Oxford Street. So, why Saintly? Well - Southampton is the home of the south coasts only premiership football team (still!) - The Saints!
