Windows Xp is the latest incarnation of the popular Microsoft Operating system. Many have complained about the sequels after windows 95 for not advancing enough, this one is the next big step! We have all come to accept that when buying a PC you almost have to have Windows as the majority of applications don?t run on any other operating systems. The Good There are many advantages of the new system for example it is easy to create separate accounts this can be used for saving preferences and confidential documents, although not really necessary this feature can be useful if a certain member of the household continually moves icons, changes backgrounds and you find it confusing. You can set it up just as you like so for example if you only really use the computer for e-mails you can just have a button to connect to the web and a icon for Outlook (an e-mail client). They have given the new OS (Operating System) a face lift it really does look surprisingly pretty now, gone is all the grey and in is a surprisingly attractive blue style. It is possible to change the appereance with files called "themes" so if you don't like the new look there is no problem. There are many clever little touches that do make using the OS surprisingly more enjoyable. If you click on a directory of pictures the icons will actually display the images so that you know with out opening each file what each one contains, this also is the case with video files as well. Integration has been created making Windows Media Player (a free application) automatically be installed so that you can easily view all your media files. Although there are some rival media players Microsoft is generally accepted to have the best player and the integration just make it that little bit easier particularly for the less technically minded. They have also integrated MSN Messenger a program used to view e-mails and to chat with friends; this feature comes into
its own when user accounts are setup as it allows the number of new e-mails each person has to be shown on the welcome screen. They have also continued the integration with Internet Explorer the program you are most likely to looking at the this web page from. New applications have been added although they only really consist of a few games (already available in Windows ME) and a Movie Maker. The latter I think has been included a little too soon I think the majority of home users will have little/no use for such a product the press of digital camcorders are high and I don't think that are large enough number of users will be that interested in using the feature, although nonetheless it is a relatively good application. Remote Assistants - If you ever get into a pickle with the computer and have to get a friend round to sort it out this is for you. It is now possible with the wizardry of the internet to allow a friend from anywhere in the world to access your computer and fix any problems. Microsoft does claim that this is one hundred percent secure so it should only be with your permission. Stability, is one of the greatest advancements many people have problems with windows crashing and losing data due to it (me included). I have not had windows crash once so far! My computer is used for demanding games, application etc. and this is such an achievement that I take my hat off to Microsoft for creating such a stable OS. Occasionally some third party applications have crashed at which point Microsoft set in and tell you that there is a problem with the program and it must be closed, this although inconvenient is reasonable and does seem to prevent the need to ever restart. It continues the trend of Windows Automatic Update a useful program that checks when you need to update an part of windows and will then step in and guide you through the process which is clear and easily understood. There are a host of other n
ew features such as shared web connections, easier networking although these are often unused and not too important. The Bad Windows Product Activation is the latest piracy protection technique it requires all Windows XP home edition users to send Microsoft information about the PC either by phone or over the internet to make it impossible for the product to be used on more than one machine (a violation of the license). This is extremely controversial although I think in general people accept it and it should help to lower the price of products in the future. You need one hell of a PC to run it, if you PC is more than 2 years old there is no chance it will run properly on it. You need at least 128 of ram and I would recommend at least a 500 mhz processor and a modest graphics card. Although in a few months PC will have advanced so much that these requirements won't seem to steep. Some program that haven't been designed for windows XP will not work on the new system for example the games GTA2 and Red Faction. Also some printers will need newer drivers to be installed not a difficult process but certainly a hassle and the less capable may have problems doing so. Overall The new OS is definitely a positive thing and as you can see the good certainly outweighs the bad. This is a great OS although if you are tempted to upgrade to it make sure you PC can handle it or just wait like the majority of people till you next buy a new PC that will certainly have Windows XP installed on.
DVD is the future today. Imagine being immersed in a movie with sounds coming at you from all directions, with picture quality that looks so good it could be real! DVD stands for Digital Versatile Disc not Digital Video Disc. It looks exactly like a CD in every respect. The difference is what it can do. A DVD can store at least 4 Giga Bytes of data and in the case of dual layered and double sided it can be far more. DVD has won the battlle for the next generation of video. DVD is digital where as VHS is anolgue we have all been used to the advantages of CD over cassettes now it is the time for the video to more to the digital era! DVD means that you can have double as sharp a picture than a VHS, digital means and almost infinitely better sound quality than a VHS. DVD is here and it is time for it to be embraced. You can now buy players for as little as £150 and you can buy DVD almost anywhere you can buy VHS. DVD has opened up the option for movie directors to include interviews, behind the scenes and numerous other additional features to movies. The sound quality now means you get different sounds from five different points in the room and that will only increase. If you aren’t sure about DVD just give it a go!
This is a great band, I don’t know what it is about them but I just can’t help but love there music. I bought their album, which was in the bargain bin due to poor sales. But when I started listening I found that it was a brilliant album from a brilliant band. Although they have a distinct sound none of the tracks are radical, but this makes a wonderful album. I hadn’t realised quite how good they were till I listened to there album, but they really are worth a second look.
This is yet another artist that is trying to replicate the sort of success of Britney and the likes with a fairly bland pop sound. Having said that it does work well and although we have heard that same sort of sound. She does somehow give it a fresh feeling. I think she will only last a few years as I can’t see her changing her sound, therefore everyone will get bored of it. Until then the music is still quite fresh and defiantly worth a listen to.
This program can be surprisingly fun, I don’t know if you have ever watched it with someone and guessed who would win. Well try it but put some money on it and then it really can be fun as you are on the edge of your seat hoping that your team wins! The game is also fairly interesting as you shout the answers at the TV. The only problem with this show is if you have sky or cable it is on all the time and slowly looses its appeal, but apart from that this is really is a surprisingly fun show to watch.
I know where they live! Yes that’s right, they live opposite someone I know. Anyway this band tries to be the next spice girls and if we are honest so far they have failed. The songs are boring and meaningless to say the least. The have a kind of rough, horrible sound, which reminds me of Shampoo and that awful song trouble, back in the early 90s. I thought that shouty sound had long since been buried for the good of every ones ears but unfortunately not. I really cannot stand there sound and style.
The is band is still unheard of in America! This worries me, as there are easily one of the best bands of the times. Although most of there songs take a while to like as they grow on you slowly. Nobody can say they aren’t good. Some say that the album isn’t all that, I disagree if you listen to the songs for a while they will grow in you! The is easily my favourite at the moment, have a listen the music really will grow on you.
Sadly this series has come to an end. Who couldn’t love the witty remarks and that wonderful humour which is men behaving badly. The program centres around two stereotypical blokes and what they get up too. From stealing a huge fish from a shop to trying to make a chair it is just hysterical. Everyone must have seen this program at least once, it is shown every Christmas but if not you really should there antics are just hilarious!
This is a driving game where instead of going round a circuit you must do jobs; some has called it GTA3D. But the game on purposely tries to stay as far away from that as possible. The graphics are extremely good considering it is for the dated Playstation. There are a few problems with it however, there aren’t enough cars on the screen due to the hardware constriction and sometimes you can get hit over a barrier and get stranded from the game. Oh and the last level is almost impossible, putting that a side if you have a Playstation and are thinking about buying a game this should come pretty high on the list.
This is of course Mr Bean’s film, in exactly the same style as the rest of his programs although it doesn’t really add anything new the plot is able to be a lot deeper due to the length. And that in turn creates a better film; this really is just more of the same. I am a fan of Mr Bean and this is like heaven on earth, if you like his programs than you really can’t go wrong with watching this. When I went to see the film I was a bit apprehensive as I was worried that it would just go on for too long. But in the film you don’t just have Mr Bean and a couple of extras, you have a lot of other characters who are on a lot therefore it doesn’t get boring. Go and see this film now if you like his comedy in the slightest!
When I got this for Christmas I thought that doesn’t look to bad…. But trust me this has shocking graphics and as graphics aren’t everything surly the game play will be good to make up for it, but it wasn’t. When I get a game I expect to be able to at least see why other people might like it even if it isn’t my cup of tea, but I really can’t with this game! The idea is to be the fastest and come first like every other game but some how this is so much worse than all the others, I can’t quite put my finger no why. Believe me even if you see this game for 2p don’t buy it!
We have all watched this games show, were you try and guess what the phrase is the animation is trying to represent. Although this is show isn’t bad it just doesn’t have anything that draws you in like say “who wants to be a millionaire”. This is the sort of show that you could watch just to kill time but if you sit down and watch it you should be a bit worried! Sometimes it can be funny when one of the contests knows all the answer and the other one doesn’t have a clue but apart from those odd moments this show really isn’t anything special.
This is a fairly old game now, I look in the clutter draw along with all the other games that I never play any more to give it a second chance. After a while I released the difference between “DD” and “DD(hire)”, the second is for better graphics. After playing it for a while I realised just why I was doing so badly, if you use a sidewinder with the game you can’t actually steer it as much. So I was breaking to get round a corner that should have been easy, stick to the trusted keyboard I say. There menu system looks great but to me is some what confusing, I used to be able to a league thing and how I just can not work out how to do it. The graphics are nothing special but when you consider the fact that this is a pretty old game then they can be excused. What really matters in games is game play and this certainly doesn’t lack in that. The idea is to trash (god that word sounds American) everyone else’s cars and you then get points for doing it. This is a great game which you can probably pick up for a about a fiver now and it would be well worth it!
This is information, which you get off your TV. I find it to be very useful for plane times and also news about games. There are a lot of problems with it however like the way it automatically turns the page after a certain time so you miss half of it or have to wait of the next page. The graphics in it are very basic but with the name teletext it is obvious that you don’t go there if you are looking for pictures. It also takes a while to get to the page you are going to up to about 30 seconds which can get quite annoying particularly if you are going to lots of pages. Another bad thing is the that in the case of information about games, it is only updated once a week so if you are looking for that ground breaking news than the internet is you best bet. Teletext does however have a lot of advantages compared to the internet, a lot more people have it, you don’t get a huge phone bill for using it and what else do you do when the adverts are on. Have a look you be surprised some of the stuff on there is way better.
