Probably one of the better hotels in Carlisle, but could be the best with a bit of tweaking.

Good hotels in Carlisle seem very hard to come by. You have a choice of 2 travel lodges/premier inns, which although basic and no frilss, do offer the traveller an affordable and fairly comfortable night. But what about those of us looking for something just that little bit special?
Does the Hallmark Hotel, adjacent to the railway station offer this?

Located in the centre of Carlisle, it is very convenient for site seeing or shopping and close to all transport links. The Hallmark is a 3 star bistro style hotel which offers 70 rooms/suites, along with conference facilities, a bar and restaurant. All rooms are en suite and the hotel offers other facilities such as wifi, weddings, and entertainment nights. When you look at the hotel on the website it looks very attractive from the out side, and the interior, dining/bar areas and rooms look very modern and contemporary.

I stayed in the Hallmark hotel with my partner, for one night in January 2010. On arrival the exterior of the hotel looked modern and clean, but being very close to the train station (15 metres) it was very busy outside with pedestrians and cars constantly passing by. On entering the hotel foyer and reception area, I was very impressed. The exterior noise faded as soon as the doors shut ebhind us and the interior felt warm, contemporary and welcoming. The reception staff were very helpful, well dressed and polite. We were told about our room, times for breakfast, and asked whether we required a newspaper or wake up call, before being given our key. Our credit card details were taken and a pre authorisation taken for £100 for security purposes.

Our room was on the third floor. The lift was old and rather creaky with graffiti on the inner door. The corrider on the third floor was again modern and contemporary, very wide and spacious. As we entered our room I was pleasantly suprised. A double en suite, with a modern and elegant feel. Dark brown furniture and plum coloured bedding gave it a cosy warmth. The room was a decent size with plenty of storage. The bathroom was small but with enough room to get in, shower and get out again. A bath with shower over it, along with toilet, sink, and heated towel rail.

On the negative side, looking past the initial niceties, the doors were old, the bathroom suite very old, and cobwebs hanging from the ceiling. No hair dryer to be seen anywhere! our window overlooked the back of what must have been a pub, so during the night all we could hear was the clattering of glass bottles being thrown in the bins. Also the doors to all the rooms slammed shut, including ours, so I was constantly being awoken by slamming doors.

We enjoyed a drink the bar, which was very pleasant, and price wise not too bad for a hotel. A pint of lager and large glass of white wine costing £9.

Breakfast in the morning was served between 0800 and 1000 and we both enjoyed a full english breakfast. It was cooked well, hot and fresh, with exception to the hash browns which were dry and stale tasting.

On checking out, the receptionist was pleasant, and we left feeling fairly rested, having enjoyed our stay.

Overall I would give the Hallmark Hotel in Carlisle 7/10. They lose points on not having a hairdryer in the room, the slightly dated parts of the hotel, and the noise from outside. Would we stay again? Yes but we would choose a room on the other side of the hotel to avoid the clatter of glass bottles at night!

The best series I have ever watched that gives you an inner warmth that will make you glow

I am a thirty something woman, who loves fashion whether it be shoes, handbags or the latest beauty treatment to help me maintain my oh so gorgeous looks (I wish!). I'm hard working, stressed to the eyeballs with 2 step kids and a never epmty washing basket, and how do I relieve my stress? Sex and the City - the complete box set with bonus disc. I have been a fan of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte since the very first day they hit my tv screen. 4 sassy, confident, gorgeous woman with their own flaws, but might I add beautiful flaws, who work hard and play hard.

For those of you who have not yet had the guilty pleasure of this fantastic series, let me give you the lowdown. Carrie is a thirty something sex columnist, whose only true love in life is Mr Big. She has her heart broken time and time again by this gorgeous, successful and very good looking guy. Will they ever realise they are soul mates?

Miranda is a partner in a law firm with money, her own apartment and a sense of humour to die for. Her fiery red hair portrays her fiery attitude and she has her own routine and loves her own space - until she meets the barman who will change her life forever.

Charlotte believes in nothing but love, marriage and babies. She knows that Mr Right is out there for her and she will fall in love, get married and have the family she deserves. Slightly prim and proper with a saucy edge to her personality, she finds who she thinks is Mr Right, but a big problem comes between them.

And finally Samantha. The oldest of the four girls although she'll never admit it! A self made successful PR business woman who loves nothing but sex, sex, sex!! She is the female equivalant of a man and she does it so well. Nobody can tame her - or can they?

So, a background for you. But why do I love it? Sex and the City is my salvation. After a long day of chasing my tail, working, dloing housework and looking after my stepkids, I like nothing more than to settle into the sofa with a glass of wine and letting myself drift into the world of these ladies. I love the fashion - shoes, handbags, dresses, designer parties. But not only that but the sassy, comedy of the writer who drops in the one liners and quips that just make you giggle. The laughter comes hand in hand with sadness when Carrie's heart os broken time and time again, and tears of both happiness when Charlotte finally marries the right man, and sadness when Samantha battles cancer.

I feel as if I know each of them personally, like they are my girlfriends and when I watch any episode I can feel myself in NewYork, walking down the same streets, sitting in the same cafes and just being a part of who they are.

This is the best series I have ever followed and I am the biggest fan of the show. Try it and you will be hooked. And I'm talking to men aswell as women! My partner says he hates it but I can see him taking a sneaky peek when I'm watching it, especially when the raunchy scenes are on! Who wouldn't! Enjoy and let yourself into the world of Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha.

BT is so behind the times with their online services, it's like living in the middle ages!

The BT internet site is a joke. I've been with BT for my phone and broadband for the last 6 months after being wooed back to them with promises of excellent customer service and even better prices. I've just signed up with Sky and am even putting up with paying a cancellation charge with BT just so that I can leave! Their site is old fashioned and behind the times. Why? My phone line and broadband are on 2 seperate accounts, which means that I can only view one of the accounts on their site. They can not be linked together or viewed together, and even though they are obviously both used with the same landline number and same address and same account holder, they can not be taken out on the same direct debit or on the same date! Now what reason did BT give to me? They just can't do it. Why? Apparently their site just can't link both my accounts together so that I can view them both. So after numerous phone calls and online chats, I thought enough is enough. It's 2010 and if a company like Sky can organise for me to have Sky TV, Sky landline and Sky broadband, all linked together, all viewable online and all coming off in one easy payment, then why on earth can't an established company like BT do it? Get with the program BT!
