Great laptop, a bit over priced

The laptops I have had in the past have been bulky and awkward to carry around, and quite heavy. When I saw the Toshiba Portege Z830-12D, I fell in love with its size. Its very light, nearly half the size of an average laptop, its just perfect, for carrying around, I just slip it in my bag, it does not weigh down my bag, you would not even know I had a laptop in my bag.

Its a bit pricey, but definitely value for money.

The hard drive is not really big, compared to a lot of laptops that are more than half the price, but it is big enough for general use, if your someone who has millions of files, you can always up grade the hard drive and memory.

One thing I don't like is, it does not have a recovery disc, it has a pre-installed recovery on the hard drive. I much prefer to have a physical item, not an invisible recovery software on the laptop. I worry if the laptop does not start, how do I get the internal recovery to work. Having a disc, I can put the disc in the external DVD Rom drive to start recovery.

My last laptop constantly never moved when I would click to open a file, it would take ages, I would get really annoyed waiting, it used to take ages when I click a link on the Internet, I don't have this problem at all with my Toshiba Portege Z830-12D I love the speed, as soon as you click it on the page of your choice, its very fast.

The graphics are good, it has great webcam images,

You would think the keyboard would be difficult to use as the laptop is a lot smaller than the average laptop, the keyboard is very smooth, the buttons are a very good size, easy to access. The keyboard is very user friendly. Its actually the best keyboard, I have used on a laptop.

I normally have problems setting up the WIFI on my previous laptops, I am usually trying to configure it for hours, then I give up, then try again, eventually I manage to set it up. On my new Toshiba Portege Z830-12D I have had no problems setting up the WIFI its very straight forward, just follow the on screen instructions.

If you want to listen to music, I listen to music a lot, so I bought a really nice pair of speakers to enhance the sound coming out of the laptop, the sound quality is brilliant, I recommend adding external speakers, the internal speaker are not very good.

I charged my battery for a few hours, the first day my laptop arrived, I was unable to use my laptop till a couple of days later, as I was busy doing other thing. When I finally used my laptop, I was so amazed at the length of time it took before I had to re-charge it, I used my laptop over a period of 3 days. Before I purchased this laptop, my previous laptop batteries only lasted about 5 hours, and after a couple of months, they would lose power to charge. I think my new Toshiba Portege Z830-12D will have a longer life.

The Toshiba Portege Z830-12D lacks a DVD Rom drive, I was a bit disappointed when I was purchasing it, but it was pointed out to me that all I needed was a external DVD Rom, so I went and brought a nice slim external DVD Rom drive, all I have to do is attach it to one of the USB ports on my laptop. It works perfectly.

      A bit old and tired.

I bought this phone sometime ago, I hardly use it anymore. It still comes in handy, if my main phone is being repaired.

I can't count how many times I dropped this phone, it still looks as new as the day I bought it. Unlike most phones, you drop them once, the screen cracks.

It's very reliable, it has a monochrome display, just like the old mobile phones, before colour technology. Not recommended if you have bad eyesight, screen display is small and dark.

The keys are well shaped to fit your finger tips, spaced well.

If you want a data plan, this is not the phone for you, it has no data capacity, so no bluetooth, internet, usb.

It's one of the most basic phones you can find, it really is only good for calls, and storing phone numbers.

Talktime is only 5 hours, so you have to keep charging it regularly.

      Advantages

      • Reliability

      Disadvantages

Perfect basic phone if you have limited funds, perfect if you have poor eyesight.

I have a Blackberry as my main phone, one day it refused to switch on, I called my Service Provider, they told me they would replace my phone in a few days. I decided I needed another phone quick but did not want to spend a lot of money. So I went down to a local shop and I saw the Alcatel OT-355.

It was perfect for what I was looking for, a very basic phone, no frills, the key's on the keyboard are spaced out, easy to see and large for easy access.

The few days I used it, I thought it would be good for people who have poor eye sight, you don't need a magnifying glass to see hundreds of icons cramped into a tiny screen as on most phones. The fonts are easy to read.

The battery does not drain quickly by hundreds of different functions you get on other phones, because the Talk time is a long 9 hours.

If you take the odd photo's with the built-in Camera the internal storage 1GB, is enough, if you want you can extended the storage with an MicroSD card up to 4GB.

I finally have my main phone back. I will keep the Alcatel OT-355 phone for future back up.

      Advantages

      • Reliability

      Disadvantages

Great if you only want to store a lot of files, if you require more, its not the phone for you.

The QWERTY keyboard is user friendly, easy to glide around the buttons as long as you don't have extra big hands.

I think Blackberry have been lazy regarding the Trackball, I don't tend to like the round ball, judging by my previous Blackberries with the round ball they have all stopped working, I am sure Blackberry are aware off the problems with the round trackball, but have decided to bring it back, the flat square trackballs are very reliable.

The 8830 World Edition comes with internal storage space of 64 MB, saves you from purchasing a SD card, on my last Blackberry curve I always ran out of space. With 64 MB you will be able to store thousands of music, image, and document files.

This phone packs a punch when it comes to RAM 16 MB, the phones speed is very fast, I can't fault Blackberry with the tremendous work they have done improving the speed of their new phones, you have to give them 100%.

Lacks a camera, this phone is not recommended for someone who regularly uses their phone as a camera.

It comes with the new mini-Sim.

If you want to listen to music through headphones, this is not the phone for you, as it has no jack.
