Mobile phone has been one of the most common gadgets not solely in England, but everywherer in this world. I have experienced one funny situation - I was in a restaurant in UK, suddenly a phone rang (well who knows whose phone that was at that time), then everyone in the restaurant took out their mobile phones at the same time... I reckon that every mobile phone owner must know the term SMS. It stands for Short Message Service - you may send short message from the mobile phone or Internet to another mobile phone. I found out this Web site www.mtnsms.com which is for you to send SMS from the Internet to mobile phone. The main feature that attracts me is I can send SMS message to everyone from different countries for example, my sister who owns a mobile phone in Malaysia. I couldn't imagine how convenient this Web site is... in fact the speed of the sending of the mssage is quite fast. However, there is a trade off. The loading of this Web site is very slow sometimes which I am not certain why. Well despite this annoying disadvantage I reckon that this Web site is quite cool.
I just moved to Netherlands to do my reaseach work. The university I am currently in now is University of Twente. There is a branch of the ABM-Amro bank in this university. Conveniently, I have opened an account in this bank. After two weeks, I have started to regret to have an account in this bank basically of the several reasons: 1. The staff service is really unsatisfied. Whenever I asked for a service from them, such as asking for debiting some money, withdrawing money and so on, they always show some "unwilling" face to me. Sometimes I am really unhappy with their service attitude. 2. The bank doesn't provide normal check book like UK banks do. Therefore whenever I want to order something from the magazine, I must call the magazine to ask for their bank account so that I can transfer the amount of money to their account. I asked the bank staff whether there is alternative option but they said NO. My first response is WHAT??. I don't have credit card, so it is impossible for me to do some shopping on the Internet. Well, although seems like there are only two reasons that I am unhappy with the bank.
Eurotrash, as the title implies, it is completely trash which is from Euro. I have watched two to three episodes of this show (because there are no other choices). I found it totally meaningless and embarrassing -- it shows us all the gabbage about Euro which really gives me (a foreigner) a very bad impression about Europe. Well, you may say that it reveals the hidden parts of Euro but believe me I have no interest at all to know that because I always think that Euro is a pretty, relaxing and worth-to-visit nations. Maria McErlane is the name of the narrator of the show. I think she never shows her face on the show (or she had but I have missed it). Presenter Antoine de Caunes, a host that speak in Frech-ish English. I guess he is a French. The show really is all about "introducing" all the weird, erotic, strange things like Sex Olympics, Sex Slavery and so on that happen in the Euro. Well, I really don't understand... Sometimes I found some of the contents of the show a bit disgusting and irritating. This show is definitely not suitable for children.
I have watched a similar advertisement once in United States as this one, also selling the same products. A bunch of black guys talking over the phone with not many dialogs, but only "WHATZZZZZZZZZUP". Yeah it is effective, because untill now (I think it is about several months ago) I still can remember this advertisement. Well I must say that the advertisement team is succeed to make this advertisement a most remembered one to all the viewers. There are many versions of this advertisement. One is a pizza man delivering a pizza, standing miserably and annoyedly in front of the door of which the home owner greeted with "WHATZZZZZZUP" (because he thought the people standing in front of his door was his friends), the other one is couple of black guys talking over phone, which I have mentioned. From my point of view, basically there is no point of this advertisement (perhaps there is but I am too stupid to understand). However I reckon that advertisement is only to make the viewers remember their products. As I said, this advertisement is really a success because sometimes I hang out with friends they always mention it. Some of them even imitate the black guys in the advertisement. However, I must say that the advertisement is getting annoying. Whenever the advertisement is on TV, I will certainly change the channel although it first once made me laugh. I wonder now whether it is the time to stop this advertisement.
UPDATE ====== A video of So Graham Norton is released. I haven't had a chance to see this video. However I guess if there is any offer, I will buy one for myself. I think it is a good bore remedy to me. --------------------------------------------- I watched So Graham Norton almost every Friday night (after the fantastic Friends) on Channel 4. I like this show because it is so funny and hilarious that always make me laugh until forgetting all my pains from my life. Perhaps some of the people (including me actually) would find that some of the show contents are a bit disgusting and a bit erotic. Honestly I am not sure I know how to enjoy this kind sense of humours. What I admire is the host, Graham Norton. He is really into this kind of talk show (though his behaviour and action a bit girly). He is really a comedy star. Every action of him is very comical. I always laugh at his jokes (though some of them are not suitable for children). The show is not only Graham solo. There are some fantastic guests join the show. This is the fun part. Graham always show the audiences some of the old or very embarrassing pictures of the guests. Sometimes Graham will show us what he found from the Web sites which are sometimes very dirty and disgusting but most of the time very funny indeed. At the beginning the show, Graham asks questions to the audiences (most of the questions are very embarrassing like who has the most embarrassing holiday...). The audiences are really into this part. They enjoy it. I can see that from their laughing face. However, I reckon that this talk show is not suitable at all for children because some of the jokes are quite dirty . For adults, this talk show is really a great laughter.
In my opinion, WatchDog is really a great consumer affair show. It helps us to stand against the manufacturers, merchants and services providers for their unfair treatment, and unreasonably high payment comparing to the products and services they provide. Anne Robinson, the host of the WatchDog (she is now also the host for the famous game show The Weakest Link). Some of the viewers think that she is rude, unthinking, unconsiderate and so on, but I think she is really great to this job. From my point of view, since WatchDog is a place for us to make complaints, to release our unhappiness after buying or having a product or service which shouldn't cost that much and so on. She is doing a great job indeed. I admire the WatchDog team work actually. They actually are doing research on every (I think not every but most) of the complaints. They actually are talking to the merchants, manufacturers or the service providers for explanations and so on. I have a very good feeling after watching this show because our unfair treatment is being cured from this show. I feel happy when I saw all those bad, rude, unthinking merchants, manufacturers or service providers being asked (in a rude way of course) by Robinson. I must say this is a great show indeed.
I have been using CorelDraw 9 for like 6 months. Perhaps I am too stupid. Till now, I am not still very familiar with most of the functions that CorelDraw 9 provides. I must admit that it is really a useful graphic tools for like drawing a picture, editing the photos (which I normally do because they are very simple tasks). However I reckon that there are more CorelDraw can provide. CorelDraw has the following categories after you installed it in your PC: 1. Graphic utilities: has the functions Corel Capture 9 and CorelTrace 9. 2. Productivity tools: has function Duplexing Wizard 3. Setup and Notes: All the help documents (which I seldom use because it is very slow for my PC). 4. Corel-Photo Paint 9 5. CorelDraw 9 My PC is 333 MHz Pentium II processor with 64M RAM memory which I consider is a reasonably fast PC. However whenever I start CorelDraw 9 or Corel-Photo Paint 9, everything slows down. I have to wait like 30 to 45 seconds for it to start (which for me is too long). Additionally, it uses up most of my RAM and CPU which really sometimes get on my nerve because it crashes sometimes very easily. Also, it expend more than 1 Gigabytes of my harddisk (Oh man it is terribly huge to me). Honestly I don't hate CorelDraw 9. In fact I think it is a pretty good tool for those who study or who work in graphical world. Perhaps I don't need it that much.
I have studied in University of Southampton for 5 years. I have stayed in hall of residence for 3 years and private house for 2 years. Glen Eyre Hall of Residence is one of the major hall of residence of University of Southampton which is located at the Bassett (around 10 to 15 minutes walking distance from the main campus - considered as very near to the university). Glen Eyre Hall of Residence is including New Terrace; Beechmount House; Old Court; J,K,L,M Blocks; and Brunei House. If I am not mistaken they can resident around 2000 students (you may check this from the homepage of University of Southampton). I stayed in M Block once last year. It was a self-catered hall (perhaps now is triggered to catered hall, for latest information please refer to the homepage of University of Southampton). Let me brieftly tells you about each of the halls: 1. Beechmount House: Nowadays it became a hall for postgraduate students including MSc and MEng students. 5 students are sharing one kitchen, one bathroom and one toilet. The room size is reasonable. The furnish is quite new (although the building is quite old). It is a very isolated building which is located beside Beechmount Road. You have to walk about 5 minutes to the laundry and the reception. 2. Old Court: Newly renovated - furnishings are all brand new and the surroundings are quite comfortable (though it is called Old Court). 5 students share one big kitchen (with all new furnitures), two toilet and one bathroom. The rooms are very big (but it is charged as a standard room price). Nowadays it is for undergraduate self-catered students. It is near the laundry and also the reception. A lot of students are competing for this building indeed. 3. New Terrace: Good and new too, however you have to pay for the electric bill. The room size is reasonable. Kitchen is nice too. I apologize that I have forgotten how many students are living in the same flat. 4. J,K,L,M Blocks: I reck
on that nowadays it is for catered undergraduate students. The room size is quite big to me. Furnitures are quite new. The terrible thing is there are about 20 students sharing two kitchens, and four rest rooms (which has 3 bathrooms inside and 4 toilets). The kitchens are quite big but it will be very crowded during dinner time. I think that's why they make it as a self-catered flat. 5. Brunei House: It is mainly for postgraduate students also. There are 7 students sharing one kitchen and two restrooms. The room size is quite small actually. Well, all of these rooms have a basin for each student in a room. So you don't have to worry about getting late for class but you are waiting in a queue for brushing your teeth. There is a Dinning Hall, Glen Eyre Bar, Glen Eyre Shop, laundry (which has about 15 washing machines inside and 10 drying machine, £1.5 for one wash and £0.20 for about 10 minutes drying), two computer rooms (one located in the K court, and the other one is located at New Terrace). So make the right choice. I hope this helps.
Nowadays, I think most of us know what MP3 is and I reckon that there are a lot of debates about MP3 legalization in the Internet world. Well, let's leave that serious issue behind at the moment. There are tons of MP3 players on the market, some of them are commercial products and some of them are shareware - which are free. Of course the appearance and design of the commercial products are better than the shareware, however I highly recommend WinAmp which is free at all. First of all, it not only plays MP3 but also all other audio formats. Second of all, it doesn't use up much RAM memory that my PC has. Finally the layout and appearance (which are known as the skin of the WinAmp) can be changed with the skins downloaded from many resources or designed by yourself. Whenever I come back to my office desk, the first thing I do is start my WinAmp player, wearing my headphone and start my busy and pressurized job. Additionally, WinAmp player has a built-in equalizer for you to adjust the sound quality that suits your mood and your type. Honestly I never get tired using WinAmp especially changing the skin of the player. Try it and believe me. I do hope that MP3 will be legalized (or if it has been legalized I do hope that dooyoo friend can correct me here because I have been left behind about this kind of news for long) soon and they will be free (I reckon that this is not that possible).
Nowadays, our lives are filled with televisions, videos, DVDs, computer games, video games, and Internet. We really seldom move our body parts except traveling to work, walking around in the office, shopping around the highstreet, and so on. We really seldom excercise our bodies nowadays. The worse consequence is we are getting fatter, unhealthier and lazier. I still remembered I watched a documentary show on television few months ago which talked about men's size (I am not sure which channel it was showed). It said that male's average waist is getting bigger (like 36 inches in 2002 - some figure like that I cannot remember precisely but around that figure - sorry), and the shoulder is getting rounder. It is terrifying to me indeed. And do you know what causes this? Yeah, we are really seldom do sports in our daily life. Perhaps some of us will complain that they are not able to find some spare time to do sport. I think this is only an excuse to be lazy - after a busy work in our daily life. There is nothing wrong to get lazy (or perhaps I should use relax) after busy work, in fact I think it is quite reasonable. However please think of our health, do take 15-30 minutes to jog, play some ball games with your children and so forth. Is sport compulsory in school? Undoubtedly, YES. I think students and childrens really need outdoor activities to balance their busy and pressurized studies. Additionally, they really need healthy bodies to do their studies. Well the best way to gain a healthy body is traditional sports. Perhaps some of the students who are not good in sports will really hate that, but I think it really depends on teachers on how to invoke their self-esteems and how to teach them to enjoy sports. I really think that sport is a very important subject in school.
I felt sorry and horrifying after heard a breaking news about a 28 years old woman, Emma Christofferson was killed because of long travelling from Austrialia back to London Heathrow. Her death was caused by a disease named deep vein thrombosis, or DVT in short form. What is this kind of disease? Honestly I had no idea at all before. Now I know that it may happen to everyone - a blood clot (which is due to no movement on legs for long time) in the leg breaks off and travels to the heart or lungs. Sudden death is a likely outcome. Doctors advised us to move around in the airplane or just move our limbs if we take long traveling like more than 10 hours. However how can we really move freely in economy class? I really doubt that. The seats are really small. I really cannot move my legs freely especially when I am sitting beside the window - this is worse when you want to go to the toilet because the two passengers beside you would be annoyed. I always feet unsafe when taking air flight because I have phobia on height and airplane. When the airplane vibrates randomly (even it is only a small movement) I cannot really open my eyes and sit tight on my seat). Additionally I always feel uncomfortable on airplane due to motion sickness until I am not able to enjoy food on airplane. Now I felt even unsafe after knowing this news. It is really a sad news to me. We should really take precautions now. Well, the possibility that an air crash happens is very unlikely (I reckon that it is about one of millions) when you compare to the accidents on road. However perhaps it is an airplane which fly above the ground, I always feel unsafe. I think the airlines really have to think of expanding the seats in economy class. I think this is really only the way to solve the DVT from happening to passengers. Additionally as a passanger we really must take good care of ourselves. Though I dislike taking air flight, but it is really the only way to go back to my home country.
I always say BBC has the best documentaries shown and I always love most of the BBC documentaries, such as the famous Walking With Dinasour. Horizon is a long run BBC documentary show that talks about science technology which includes astronomy (which I like most), medical technologies and biology and so forth. Indeed, I learnt a lot from this documentary which more than I read because with images and voices, I can remember stuff more vividly and can understand more easily. I still remember there is one show on Horizon that talked about black hole. Who knows what black hole is in a normal life. I reckon that Horizon is really a horizon for us, normal people who never have a chance to know about this kind of stuff in our daily life (of course if that is your interest you may have read a lot of books about this kind of stuff). I always enjoy this show, perhaps because I am a very curious person especially to those new and fresh stuff. Additionally I think children should watch with their parents. Why shouldn't we spend a couple of hours (perhaps one hour) to learn something very interesting that we seldom or perhaps never have a chance to learn from our daily life? After seeing some of the Horizon shows, I feel that human beings are so insignificant in the universal... and this is really a fact.
Waterstones bookshop, for me is the most common offline, highstreet bookshop because it can be found easily almost in every city highstreet. It is really a popular bookshop indeed in United Kingdom and also it is really convenient to me because there is one Waterstones bookshop openned in front of the building where I study in my university. So, whenever I am bored or there are some books I am looking for, I will surely go to the bookshop having a break. Additionally a cafe is opened on the second floor of the bookshop which really makes the atmosphere of the bookshop more relaxing and nicer. However, I think Waterstone needs some improvements. Nowadays there are so many online bookshops virtually opened on the Internet. I think the most famous one is Amazon.com. What their selling point is they offer much cheaper books and convenient delivery service to buyers. I reckon that Waterstones books are quite expensive. Therefore honestly I seldom buy any books from Waterstones. Additionally I couldn't find some of the books in the Waterstones which I need for my studies. The reason is the books are not that common and not popular. I hope that Waterstones should try to put more variety of books on the shelf for all people. Well, perhaps there are really many online bookshops which can offer cheaper books. I think highstreet bookshops wouldn't disappear because it is more fun to have a peep on the books standing in front of the shelf in a bookshop. In fact, for doing refund, it is much more convenient to do it face to face.
STA, is a short form of Student Travel Agents. As the name implies, it is there specially for students - to help them plan a journey, book air flight tickets, and so forth. The most exciting about STA is occasionally (actually quite frequently) there are some very cheap and very reasonable flight tickets offer for students to save students pocket money for traveling. For us, foreign students, who have to spend about 300 to 500 pounds to go back our home countries are always desperate for cheap flight tickets. Well STA is really the best place to look for. Therefore I always click on their Web site (www.statravel.com) to check for cheap flight tickets. The staff of STA are very helpfull and nice. They really willing to spend hours for you (of course it is too much if you really sit there bothering one of the staff for hours), perhaps it is too exaggerated. What I want to say is they are really patient and there for helping you to sort out all your questions and journey plan. They always check for the cheapest price for me to go back to Malaysia (my home country) which will spend at least half an hour (that is not because their PC is slow, it is because it takes time to check all the transit flights and so forth). Additionally, there are lots of STA branches all around the world. You may find one in your home country too.
