I've only bought three fragrances in my life (more of the other two at some later date) and this has to be my favourite.
Allure Sensuelle was developed by Jacques Polge, Chanels 'Master' Nose. This fragrance was designed (as was the original Allure) to have neither top, nor bottom notes but rather to have a blend that works well and changes according to the wearer.
If any of you have tried Allure then don't be put off, Allure Sensuelle has a simultaneously a much lighter and also smokier smell. Although you do have to be careful not to use too much and if used sparingly can also be worn in the day.
Bergamot, Mandarin Orange, Pink Pepper, Jasmine, Rose, Iris, Candied Fruit, Vetiver, French Vanilla, Amber Patchouli, Frankincense, Sensual Notes are all part of this blend and you will find you get a few compliments when you wear this.
It comes in a deep purple/maroon box and the bottle is rectangular glass with a purple/maroon cap. All in all this is a wonderful fragrance and far superior to its predecessor. If you use it sparingly you will not only get the best fragrance out of it but it will also really last.
You can get bottles for roughly £54.00 and it will last you about six months.
I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that the first time I opened a can of this for my cat SoftFace It smelled so good I was actually tempted to try it! It smells so good!
I know for a fact that when I'm out Softface passes his time reading the ethical section of the Observer. this might be the reason he love Applaws so much as it uses all natural ingredients and dolphin friendly tuna.
Having previously fed him mainly Whiskas I noticed a few changes after switching him to a diet of Applaws wet food and another brand of dry food for the mornings.
Firstly his mood changed, he's always been quite a scrappy cat and after the switch he chilled out a heck of a lot. Also his (ahem!) poo doesn't smell bad at all. SoftFace is an indoor cat so this really makes my life far more nicer. Also for the first year of his life he was completely mute, again after the switch he started 'talking' when he wanted to be fed and is now quite the conversationalist!
This really is a fantastic product, I think the price tag (though high) is definitely worth it. The only problem I do have is that it's tricky to get hold of. I live in London so arrogantly believe I can get everything I need within five minutes of my house, it turns out that most supermarkets don't stock Applaws and I need to go to a Vat and Petshop to pick this up.
It's still fabulous though and I would highly recommend it.
Oooooh, the logitech Pure-Fi Express Plus!
First up is the sound. Logitech says it has omnidirectional speaker technology, providing quality sound throughout the room. Which it does. The volume controls are strong and sensitive enough to cater for a party or for when I'm drifting off to sleep. What's so great is that even when I turn it up loud there is no sound distortion.
It's gorgeous, compact and extremely light which is why I found the sound quality so surprising. at the back there is a grip so you can cart it about if you want and can eiher be plugged into the wall or will run on batteries. When I first bought it, the system came with several different plastic plugs that you put in the dock depending on whichever iproduct you happen to have.
The alarm clock is a bit weedy unfortunately so I normally end up setting my iphone alarm which, if plugged in alerts me through the main speakers. My only beef with this system is with the alarm clock. What I want is for the alarm to be music from my iphone playlists but there is no way of setting this. I've seen it done on other speaker systems and it's a shame this one doesn't include that particular functionality.
The remote control is great, very dinky and has play, skip, pause, shuffle, repeat and volume functions as well as a little compartment at the pack of the machine to keep it in so it doesn't get lost.
There is a lot to recommend this system, for a low price you get an excellent quality, multi-use, aesthetically pleasing sound system which is eminently portable. For under £50.00 you are definitely getting your moneys worth and will likely be very pleased with this product.
Okay this is my first book review so bear with me...
House of Leaves is an easy book, please don't be put off (as have some of my friends!) by the sheer volume of it. If you love Poe, Jorge Luis Borges, Dave Eggers, and Lovecraft you will definitely go for this, if not then I urge you to read it anyway.
The plot starts from the first person perspective of Johnny Truant, a tattoo parlour assistant living on the fringes of an L.A alternative scene whose life is presented as having difficult and confusing relationships with the people around him. When searching for a new apartment his friend Lude takes him to the apartment of Zampano, an apparently blind man who has recently died.
Whilst looking through the contents of the apartment he finds a series of notebooks, napkins, scraps of paper and other assortments that detail both a film called The Navidson Record and a reportedly factual account of the Navidson family's experiences. House of leaves then switches between different perspectives, Johnny Truants, Zampano's academic study and theories, and from the Navidson family themselves.
The film the Navidson record, came into life as Will Navidson and his former model wife (Karen Green) move to a new home in Virginia, intending to settle down with their two children. Originally intended to document their family life and explore the relationships between them the shocking events in the house take over the Navidson Record whilst Zampanos document remains an indepth exploration of the interpersonal relationships.
When the house begins to develop new hallways and corridors seemingly at random Navidson and others decide to explore them.
I don't want to give too much away so I will leave the central plot for you to find out more about and now tell you a bit more about the format of the novel itself.
What starts off as a simple first person perspective narrative quickly evolves into having multiple narrators and in the case of Zampano - whose 'voice' is only ever heard through his academic work or accounts of him recalled to Johnny Truant - a seemingly endless series of footnotes and commentary. Some of the pages are littered with seemingly unimportant descriptions of different types of architecture, some pages have only word standing alone on the page. What I thik is so wonderful is that the experience of reading the book mirrors the situations the protaganists find themselves in. Bewilderment, claustrophobia, panic and despair are all translated into the readers experience of finding their way through the text. This is done extremely effectively.
The 'academic' footnotes also give the story a strong realistic basis, rooted in myth and literary interpretation. This has the positive effect of weaving the fiction of the book into the fact of your everyday life whilst reading. Indeed this is what happens to Truant as he uncovers more.
The relationship between Navidson and Karen and the house is what makes this a true psychological horror and brings to mind The Fall of The House of Usher. Poe is a great favourite of mine and I believe him to be a strong influence on Danielewski.
I cannot recommend this book enough, I was lucky enough to discover it by accident in a charity shop and whilst looking for other copies to give as presents I've often found that it needs to be ordered but it is available on Amazon and other internet retail sites.
Please Please read this book if you get the chance.
Okay first off this review is not going to be about technical specs, mainly because I could quote them but I would not understand them. It's basically a great quality DVD projector which (with the right cables) you can also hook up to your T.V and internet.
Okay - so. . . My housemate got this bad boy recently and we've had so much fun using it. I was initially worried about the sound quality however it is as good as any T.V and you can hook it up to speakers if you have them.
The picture quality is really great for the most part although I'm not sure how the black is balanced as darker areas all seem to look a bit samey in some shows. Getting the position of the box is important so we built a special shelf for projecting onto one of our walls.
I cannot tell you enough how fun this is. We've started having film nights at our house and it is so easy to use! The navigation is great and more importantly it looks so nice in our living room!
When we didn't have the shelf it was really easy to pack away as well as it comes with a mega handy protective carrying case.
What I like most about this product is its so easy to use, pack up and take places with you. unfortunately I know spend a lot of time watching the wire at home!
If you've been thinking about getting a home movie system then I would highly recommend this
Anyone who has been to Heathrow terminal 4 will know that it is a dismal dreary place with nothing in it but a starbucks and a weatherspoons. Yotel makes it all go away. . .
It's mega reasonable. We got a premium cabin for four hours for £40.00, I think the standards are around £25.00. In comparison there is a Hilton at Terminal 4 that costs around £200.00 a night.
The Cabin itself is very cool, kind of like a futuristic love-pod. You can imagine James Bond in it - floating into space with some hottie named miss Goodbody or something. The Bed is one of those electric folding beds that were used to fold the glorious Thora Hird (may she rest in peace) and are very comfortable. It does feel like a cabin but a fun futuristic camping-in-space cabin. The lights are a bit hard to control and are a bit blue for my liking but they fit nicely with the decor. Plus there is a 'natural' light option as well.
The awesome powershower and bathroom are only separated by a glass wall (which thankfully has a curtain) so if you're sharing the room you do need to know someone really well!
Yo! Best Entertainment
When we put some music on we were really surprised at the quality of the selection. For instance they had Peaches (OMG THAT"S RIGHT) Stevie Wonder, The Beach Boys, AC/DC and many others that were highly to my liking. You can also order movies or listen to the radio.
Were really helpful and friendly - even when we broke one of the glasses in the room they didn't charge us or act shirty or anything. Check in was easy and the booking process was pretty straighforward as well.
Yo! A bit more info.
If you go to their website www.yotel.com you can take a mini virtual tour of the rooms and find out the prices. They're part of the Yo! Sushi Chain and there is something about the design of the cabins that is gloriously functional and still really fun. They have Yotels in Gatwick, Heathrow and Amsterdam and hopefully more will spring up soon as they're wonderful
I would highly recommend this to anyone who needs to travel at funny hours, likes pretending they're in a Sci-fi movie or wants to escape the terrible boredom of Terminal 4.
I've had my iphone for over nine months now and I would highly recommend it to anyone, in fact everyone should get one and then we'll all get skype and never pay for a call again!
First off, the touch screen is responsive and the visual design makes it really easy to navigate and understand.
The typing function was hard at first as I thought it was too small for my fingers but once I realised that the spelling programme understands this and automatically corrects me then it became much easier. It would be nice to have functionality to add new words (like my name) to a dictionary.
I am a serial downloader of applications and games and there is an amazing range of these available, most of these have 'lite' versions which you don't have to pay for and there's a lot of good lifehacking tools on there for free to. This does mean my battery life goes down a lot faster but if you carry your USB charger cord with you it's usually easy to find a computer! I've never yet run out of space but I tend not to keep many photos on there.
This was really useful to me as a freelancer last year as the googlemaps app and geolocation function that comes with the 3G was great as I was running around the country.
My only criticism would be that you can't (yet) send picture messages although you can email them very easily. I've heard rumours that the latest Operating System will allow us to send picture messages an also use the iphoe as an internet tethering device which is fantastic news.
If you're considering buying one then I'd go into an apple store and have a play! You probably wont be able to resist.
