Gallows. An energetic 5 piece with their roots in Watford, UK. Hardcore punk at its finest. If you're not into listening to bands where you can't hear what the lead singer is actually saying then these might not be for you!
Their debut album, Orchestra Of Wolves, was released on the 25th September 2006 under In at the deep end records.
The band's sound is one which may take some getting used to- the songs portray their reputation for being loud, youthful, energetic punks! The songs sound as if they are playing them live, they are that crazy.
I think that this is a good thing as opposed to a bad thing, as people listening to the album can recreate the feeling they get when they saw them live. Or alternatively if you haven't seen them live, you can get a good picture of how much energy they posess in shows.
The songs which really stand out for me are the two songs which were released as singles;
Abandon Ship- a fast paced song about losing control of a ship- the lyrics 'LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE-THIS IS THE CAPTAIN OF YOUR SHIP!' are sung with so much emotion and can barely be made out due to him screaming, adding to the awesomeness of this song. Very clever.
In the belly of shark- Awesome riffs over the top of an even awesomer vocal performance. Just how does the lead singer sing with such power and emotion, it really blows you off your feet. The lyrics 'SO HERE I LIE, IN THE BELLY OF A SHARK' get repeated again and again, with the listener feeling the force of the song. If you want a good idea of what i mean by emotion- check out the video...
"Kill the Rhythm"
"Come Friendly Bombs"
"In the Belly of a Shark"
"Rolling with the Punches"
"Last Fight for the Living Dead"
"Just Because You Sleep Next to Me Doesn't Mean You're Safe"
"Will Someone Shoot That Fucking Snake"
"I Promise This Won't Hurt"
"Orchestra of Wolves"
This is the debut album from the english indie rock group 'Dirty Pretty Things'. This band formed from the ashes of The libertines, no doubt you have heard of. Doherty went on to form Babyshambles while Carl Barat, the lead singer of dirty pretty things decided to form his own band too.
With great anticipation awaiting from The libertines massive fan base, they pulled this album out and surprised many with their ability to write quirky, british, fast paced, catchy, libertines-esque music.
Theres a good question, where would Dirty Pretty Things be without The libertines? I Wonder indeed.
From the first moments of the album, you sense an overwhelming sense of rebellion, the songs go about trying to be something else aside from all that had gone before. The very first thing you hear is 'blah blah blah' representing their rebellious attitude to music.
The hit single from the album deserves a chapter in their success itself, 'Bang Bang, You're Dead' was released on April 24th 2006 and got to an astounding No.5 in the UK chart- an achievement worth noting when indie and rock music get little attention in the modern chart system.
With one listen, radio listeners were doomed to have this song stuck in their heads for the rest of their day without fail. The pure genious behind the chorus lies within the sharp dynamical changes in the guitars, vocals echoing out above the clangy almost accidental sound they work so well throughout the album.
My personal favourite on the album is 'Blood Thirsty Bastards' which really has a miserable tone in Carl's voice, to the point of almost becoming comical! It really is a great song due to the clever lyrics, explaining how 'he had nothing to give them-he thought they were his friends'.
So all in all, the album is worth a shot- if you're into your british indie, this is a must have!

It's my pleasure to introduce to you
He needs no introduction, even though the first song says the very words above. I suppose it sets the scene a little for what is to come, a fusion of pop, dance, R&B and pop blended with the 'sexy laugh' and apparant good looks (i say apparant, because i myself are not attracted to the male gender, but i have heard women comment on him)
The world conquering Justin Timberlake has to his name six grammy awards and an emmy award. If 7 million copies of this, his debut album doesnt spell it out, then what can?
Im going to be honest, this album is fantastic. It really is. If i can force myself to think anything bad about him then so be it. I doubt it though.
His songs are infectious, as soon as you listen to him , you can tell he has a talent which is hard to find. He really shows himself off in a modest way. Its easy to see with just a glance at each song that you will recognise some of the chart topping hits.
The first single he released from the album was well chosen, the second song on the album; 'Like I Love You'. It sounds cheesy, right? Well it may be, but after a while you get through the cheese to see that this song oozes mountains of style and talent. The lyrics open the song, where it is apparant that he is talking to a girl he finds attractive.
'You keep lookin at me, You gettin scared now, right? Don't fear me baby, it's just destiny, It feel good right?'
Then the song kicks in after this acousticly spanish intro then drums come in, added to the mixture. The song is simple in technique but has lots of creativity, just drums, acoustic guitar and vocals can be heard with the odd splashing of backing vocals and synth.
This song is really excellent, probably my favourite on the album.
The next single he released was the moody 'Cry Me A River'. A supposed song about the split with the famous Britney Spears, this song was not only a catchy song with great music, but also an insight into their relationship and the break. Its like reading an interview with the man himself. It is very reflective, with a very sad feel and vibe to it. Dont listen if you are on the verge of a break up, seriously it will make you cry. Emotional songs are good, if you can relate to them, which many people will be able to do with this song.
The next single 'Rock Your Body' was a completely different take on how to go about topping the charts. I dont think you could get more different than the previous release. This shows he is flexible and multi-talented and that he isnt confined to one genre. The song reminds me of a disco (partly because of the video where he is dancing around in a small room full of lights) and it has a great funky vibe to it. The song makes you want to dance, especially the chorus. The chorus is very catchy and the bit where he sings a little quieter is excellent. Another contender for song of the album.
'Señorita', the fourth and final release from the album took another take on the artist, where he has a very spanish influenced sound, with a spanish acoustic guitar and a simple melody. My favourite part of the song is where he talks to the listener and audience, telling them to 'listen' and that he wants to try something with them. Audience participation can be heard, as though it is a live performance (but it isnt, it is just different layers of his voice) After this part he says the famous words-
Ladies, good morning!'
Followed by the perfect blend of an evil and sexy laugh.
The other songs on the album are not as good as the singles (which is why he released the best ones) but they still show potential. I would listen for yourself to see what i mean. This album is a must for any person who remembers his early stuff, he has released many good songs since this album. I would buy this if you want something a bti different from your usual genre. I usually listen to rock and indie but this album provides me with a breath of fresh air when other genres become overwhelming.
Imagine you are completely alien to computers. No, really, Imagine it.
Obviously you are not, you are sat here staring at a computer screen reading this garble of mine. Im going to try to explain this BBC site which offers help to people with no knowledge of computers. Its extremely basic and really emphasises on building up from the start and not skipping or presuming that you know anything.
Now, I am not going to generalise and say that older people will have problems with this type of thing, but most younger people have been bought up with the things in their highchairs, as to speak. What i mean is that i get the impression from the site layout and the way everything works is that this is intended to help older people set up their computers and understand that different actions on their keyboards and such, will result in other things happening elsewhere. This actual concept might take someone a while to get their head round. I dont mean to insult anyone and im sure the site doesnt either. It really is genuine help which i would be thankful for if i didnt understand the basics of computers.
This site offers a step by step flash interactive help guide to using your keyboard, mouse and computer screen. Wow. So you are completely alien to the concept of a keyboard, it basically shows you that pressing a button on the keyboard translates to something else happening on the screen. So, as if by magic, pressing the 'n' button results in the 'next' button on the screen flashing and the next scene starts.
The woman presenting the help is extremely helpful (very patronising) but this is what is needed in this situation. She kind of jumps out of the screen at you and moves around the screen explaining things. Its a bit like she is talking just to you and you only. Its a simple flash program so it doesnt take a lot of time to load.
She presumes you know absolutely nothing about computers. She doesn't let you continue through the help screens until you press the corresponding key or button to what she is saying. So for example she tells you to press the 'n' key to go to the 'next' screen and the 'b' key to go back. Simple stuff.
This encourages user interaction, which is a good way of learning!
So if you know anyone that needs a little bit of help setting themselves up for their own computer, or just someone that generally needs a push in the right direction in the techy area of things, this site is perfect. Really, there is no way that you will ever need to use this site personally, but you might find that the site could be of some help to your older relatives or anyone else you might know that needs help.
On first listen to this album, i really was not sure. On one hand, the catchy tunes and the harmonious vocals blended nicely together, but on the other, i could just not get used to the style and presentation of the lead singer's vocals.
Having seen them live very recently, i gave it another shot. I have now been listening to this album alot more. I know kind of 'get' the style and enthusiasm from the band. I enjoy there music alot more. My advice would be to give it time, let it grow on you. I would say this about most music albums though, seeing as it is unfair to make first impressions on music and not give it another chance (a bit like meeting someone new for the first time! you make judgements and they are not neccesarily good ones)
As for the sound of the actual music, I would not say they are technically the best band out there, but the catchy lyrics combined with even catchier guitar riffs explode in a virtuous harmony of indie and punk combined. Its all about the character of the band and there unique style. (they have great stage costumes- tweed outfits and lots of specs is what i remember the most)
The singles from the album did not do extremely well in the mainstream UK charts it has to be said, but this is not a reflection on how good the songs are at all.
'Hot Summer' provides a soundtrack to the summer, a very simple guitar riff underneath simple lyrics gives this simple song. The lyrics are good, the timing being the notable thing for me (he sings words at different speeds to you think) Its so easy to get into your head and is also very good to dance and wiggle to! :)
'She's Attracted To' has a very good vibe and feel to it. It reminds a little of 'Parklife' by Blur in the way he sings about something which tells a story with a stand out catchy chorus. The chorus uses a surprising amount of dynamics, more instruments are introduced and it gets louder and more punkier.
'Here Comes The Rumor Mill' has a great basic up and down bassline and pretty good lyrics. The song has very simple music, which as do many of the songs on the album. The chorus is excellent, again using a big dynamical change with a beefy guitar being involved. The song makes me smile.
'The Decision' makes me laugh, due to the bassist's vocals providing a almost comical vibe to them. I am not sure why but i can imagine him telling a very funny joke. Im just weird though :P The song has a slow and simple sound, with the harmonies in the chorus standing out for me.
The lyrics 'I'm the prince of wales, I'm the prince of wales and if all else fails I'm the prince of wales!' make me laugh every time.
Overall, if you decide to buy this album, please, please give it a chance. Because i almost didnt and it would have been a fatal error in my logic to have left this piece of genious out of my musical wardrobe.
We7.com is a website which offers you a free music streaming service. You choose the songs and albums you want to listen to and bang, there you go. They also give you an option to buy the music you are listening to so you can play it on your ipod or other MP3 players.
Basically its free because you have to listen to small adverts at the beginning of each song you stream and listen to. The adverts generate revenue for the artists , as you have the option to buy the songs you listen to (at quite reasonable prices too!)
So, you get free music and the artists get paid? This cannot be?!? This is fantastic, i hear you say. Legal? Yes, its completely legal!
I found the site when i performed a google search for 'free streaming' as i really wanted to listen to music when i was away from my mp3 player. This site saved me.
The site has a very user friendly layout and style. I cannot fault the way the site has been designed, fantastic colour scheme and very easy to select which songs you want to listen. Make your own playlists with a few clicks and find many songs you want in seconds. This site really works, and fast too.
You click the little play button by any song and the song plays within a second. After the short advertisemnt, the song plays completely all the way through (some sites only offer previews of songs, which is very annoying)
Ok, im going to try to think of bad points about the site...
Not alot to be honest, just the little wait before a song due to adverts (but this doesnt bother me at all!) and the lack of abstract artists which wont really bother most people. So, there really is not a lot bad with this site at all!
I highly recommend this site when you are unable to find the song you want elsewhere on the internet and wish to find it quickly. This site is useful away from home (as usually at home you have your own media player etc) so using this site when you havent got your ipod is very useful.
If you are bored and you feel like wasting your time on the internet this site is brilliant. Only problem is, is that once you are onto the site, it is a little addictive. There are just so many games to play and you can get carried away.
The layout of the site is easy to use, easy to navigate and easy to find what you are looking for. Simple layouts seem to be the key to these sites (obviously with everyone in mind, a complex layout would not benefit their younger gamers) Across the top of the screen are the tabs to 'home', 'catagories', 'most popular', 'newest', 'game list A-Z' and 'my profile'. This enables the user to find what they are looking for at a touch of a button. If you are looking for a particular game which someone has recommended to you or if you want to find a new game, you can with great ease.
There is also an easy 'find a game' section on the left hand side of the page. This can be useful to find a certain game within your chosen catagory.
As for the colour scheme of the site, i find it a little off putting. Orange, Red and yellow seem to be the main colours used, but i find that this puts me off some of the games. This could be because the game screens are not actually that big so anything surrounding the page can put you off.
As with many gaming websites, they are primarily funded by advertisements. This is extremely annoying as it not only distracts you from your game but also adds loading times onto the page. Most of the time the adverts are relevant and seem to be aimed at hardcore gamers (eg. other gaming websites). The adverts get prime spot on the page too where i would have liked to have seen the game be on the page.
The games themselves are excellent, a good variety and most are easy to play. Simple instructions can be found to most games. The thing I like about the site is the high scores. Underneath the games can be found a high score section which enables you to see where your performance (if you can call it that!) ranks among others in the particular week and all time. If you manage to get onto them it can be good fun competing with your friends.
Overall, a good site. I wouldnt recommend it as the best game website on the internet but it still is worth a visit when you want something to do with your time.
This site offers a vast range of guitar tabs (if you dont know what they are, its a way of showing you what to play on the guitar using numbers etc) It is a lot easier than using proper musical notation, which for some people playing the guitar, is a mystery. For me, i know a little about musical notation, but prefer to use guitar tabs as they are by far easier.
As for availability, they offer a massive selection of user submitted tabs, most of the time the song you are looking for is available (unless you are looking for a lesser known band)
I came across the site when i typed into a regular google search for a tab on one of the songs i was trying to learn. It usually comes up right at the top alongside some other tablature sites. In my opinion though, this one is the best. If you play guitar and you want to learn a song, this site really can help you out. The tabs are very easy to understand and it takes seconds to start playing your favourite songs.
The quality of the tabs themselves are variable, some are excellent and some are entirely rubbish. You can easily tell which one's are duff, by the 5 star rating system. It tells you which ones other people found useful and which ones other people didnt.
The layout of the site is easy to use, with clear sections providing you with quick links to different sections of the site such as their forum, lessons and interviews. The thing i like about the site is the 'top 100 tabs' section which can be found directly next to the search bar. This is good when you cant really think of a song to learn and play, it gives you a list of the most popular tabs (stairway to heaven by led zeppelin most of the time coming up top)
The site offers you a FREE service. This is great because you dont have to pay (like sheet music) Obviously, the site ensures you dont waste too much time faffing around making up your own tab (this can be fun sometimes, but if you are after a quick song to play, this is perfect)
The search bar defaulted to 'song name' rather than 'artist', so be careful when looking for a particular artist, it automatically searches for the song and not the artist's name. This can be a pain when you dont know what the song is called. It is easy to change the search bar.
I often use this site to check out a recent or even old song that i want to play on my guitar. Most of the time i like it to be quick, as i will have my computer on while i play the guitar. If i just want a little more inspiration then this is useful. If i hear something which i think would be good to play i can look it up easily. Overall a good site with a very wide range of songs to learn and enjoy.
This website is a yet another way to waste your time on the internet. If you are into playing pointless games when you are a bit bored and have nothing better to do then this site cant really do you any harm.
I found this website when i was looking for 'Jumpers for goalposts, a highly addictive football game. This is just one of the games on the site, which boasts an impressive variety of sport, strategy, action, adventure, arcade, shooter and puzzle games.
To find a game, basically scroll through the site to find one that sounds like your cup of tea and click on the link. Its that easy. No registration, nothing that has to waste even more of your time.
The loading time for the games is reasonable. It really doesnt take a very long time at all. Sometimes when it is loading you can look up the instructions on how to play. This is handy.
The site layout is very easy to naviagate around, with the different type of games in headers across the top of the page. If you are looking for a certain game, you can look it up via the search bar at the top left hand corner of your screen.
The annoying thing about the site is the weird adverts on the side of the screen which seem to be very distracting and weird. They change often, if you refresh the page, you will find that the adverts change. This is the main reason why the site is kept free though, so you can not really grumble with having to look at an advert on the side of your page.
For some reason underneath the game you are playing is a whole list of other games (i think its every game on the site). This makes loading a little slower than it should be.
Overall, i think that the site could be better with the removal of the adverts and the lists underneath the game. Not a bad way to play games on the internet though.
I first joined pogo way back in 2006. I use this site about once a month, whenever i get bored. I used to use it alot more, but i suppose the effect of the site wore off on me.
They are always releasing new games and the best ones are free, you can pay to join 'club pogo' where you get more games and special avatars and stuff. I am not a member of this so i cannot really tell you much about it. At the moment they have a deal where you get 3 months extra free if you join. I think its probably not worth it though, the free games are good enough.
Registering with the site is easy enough, you just have to give basic details and you can get playing games as quick as that.
There are over 100 free games to play but the games i play the most are :
'Poppit!' which is a balloon popping game. There is a strategy behind it but i think that most people just click pretty much where they want to. Its one player so you cant play against other people, but as solving boredom goes, this one is right up there.
'Yahtzee Party' is a game following the game layout as the traditional board game 'Yahtzee'. This is easy to play, the rules are simple (if you dont understand anything, you can easily look it up on the rules section of the game)
'Chess' This is a classic. Two player, head to head with another live person (unless you want to play robots). This game runs on a rating system where you gain points if you win and lose points if you lose. This is a good thing to be playing for, it makes people play better and there is actually a purpose behind the game rather than just for the game's sake.
You earn tokens which you can buy avatars and things with. I am not really into this as much, i just want to play the games and solve my boredom. I suppose to some people this is an extra incentive. At the end of most games you win, you get a oppertunity to have a jackpot spin (which is real money you can potentially win). The chances of winning this is very low, but you do win tokens with the spin.
The site layout is easy to use, although it is usually plagued by advertisements. These change for reasons unknown, but most times i visit the site they have a different companys logo in the background.
The annoying thing about the games is the loading time at the start of games. Sometimes my computer just doesnt load some of the games and other times it takes a while. It used to be better for me, but im not sure if its just my computer getting older. They show you about 30 seconds of adverts inbetween some games too, this is ok but after a while this can become irritating. This is why the games are free after all though.
Overall, a good site with a wide variety of games to play for free!
I use this site to order pictures I have taken with my digital camera. My main reason to use the service is because i want to have the pictures in my hand, show them to people. No matter how much technology advances, there will always be a need for actual prints. Thats what I think anyway.
One thing about this site is that it is easy to use. Its extremely user friendly. Its easy to set up an account, easy to edit photos, easy to order prints.
The photo uploader has to be installed (at least it did on mine) but this is a quick and easy process to complete. This uploader makes life alot easier when uploading multiple prints.
Its simple enough to select which photos you want to print, with the programme on the site telling you which photos will give you optimum printing quality (bad quality digital photos will not print as well) This is displayed by a system which uses a smiley face, a blank face and a unhappy face, a sort of traffic light smiley face system.
The price of prints is reasonable, with offers after you go over a certain limit of photos (eg. giving you prints for 5p each rather than 6p when you order 200 pics- this is just an example of the type of offer)
If you sign up now, you can get 40 free prints. There are offers such as these for you to take advantage of. Sign up incentives like these are perfect for customers who are not sure if they want to join the site.
Something i found extremely good about this service was the speed at which prints were printed and delievered to your door. I ordered the prints on the weekend and they are always with me within 4-5 days, sometimes less. This is below the estimate for delivery for me. Im not sure why this
happens, but i like the fact that they are very speedy.
Overall, i would definately use this site again, purely on experience i can say that you can trust this site to give you good quality prints when you need them.
I was bought this christmas 2008 and i enjoyed flinging it across the room at family over for christmas.
If you buy this for your kids: Be well prepared. This is a highly annoying toy but also a lot of fun! Basically, its a monkey with rubber arms, that you can catapult at whatever you like! If this be people, be prepared.
Its not just a catapult, it also makes noises! Whenever it hits anything, it squeals and shouts crazy monkey noises (which is probably the cause of annoyance) It is a lot of fun and can be enjoyed by everyone of all ages.
I think there are several editions of the same kind of mechanism (animal with rubber arms= catapult) such as a chicken. My monkey has a blue cape and helmet unlike the one in the picture at the top of this review. I think there are different ones and im sure that you could even personalise your monkey Maybe?
If you are after a serious toy, dont even think about this. You need to have a certain threshold of fun within you, even to fling it back at your kids when they are aiming up the next shot.
As for quality, my monkey has lasted me until now and is still hanging up in my room. This is after quite heavy endurance and playing with alot.
The problem is though, after about a day or two, the monkey becomes nothing more than that annoying thing that people want to strangle and destroy. There is a limit to how much you can play with this toy and after a while the effect definately wears off.
What i love about this chocolate bar is its advertising gimmick- 'it's not for girls!'
This is great for the company on two counts:
1) It persuades men to eat it (they feel its masculine, its fitting in with the men) This also provides a sense of exclusiveness, if they think that its only them allowed, its a sort of privilege.
2) Not only men, but also women want to eat this chocolate bar. This is because women feel that they want something that they cant have. Its sort of a temptation which leads to curiosity. I know if i was a women i would want to at least try it just to overthrow the system :)
This is why the chocolate bar does well in the chocolate bar industry (at least this is why i think this happens)
On the other hand, some women might feel like the chocolate bar is off putting due to its advertising scheme. I hope not.
On to the taste of the chocolate bar, it feels full. It really fills me up and gives me energy (like alot of other chocolate bars) but this one is different. The chunks of yorkie are massive, bigger than any other chunks of chocolate bar i have seen, so most of the time i eat one or two chunks then leave the rest to eat later. This is a good design because if you eat it over a more spacious time, you will like it more and more and hence you will buy it again.
The packaging is stylish, the bold YORKIE logo appearing across the front, with a 'no girls' symbol incorporated into the O within the YORKIE (see picture above) Across the side of the bar, 'It's not for girls!' in a similar font to the main yorkie logo has been printed, making it clear that girls should not buy it and that it must only be eaten by men.
Overall, this is one of my favourite chocolate bars, the taste is one of the best and i enjoy eating them. I would recommend this to any chocolate lover.
Straight to the taste of the product... opening the packet i can smell that they are more cheesy than they used to be. The taste is almost salty in a weird way, but this is a good thing. The cheese can be tasted (although it doesnt taste like conventional actual cheese) and the feel of the cheddar in your mouth stimulates the taste buds. It is tasty.
These little snacks have recently taken a new approach to their product. Sprawled across the front of the packet, are the words 'now with more cheese... yum.' They seem to be trying to be healthy, with 'made with real cheese', 'no artificial colours' and 'no artificial flavours' across the front of the packet too.
On the back of the packaging, it had all the nutrition information, 129 calories in a packet, if you are into counting calories and stuff like that, this is not a lot of calories for the snack.
They fill me up more than crisps, they almost have a biscuity nature to the texture of the biscuit and they have more substance about them.
They contain milk, egg, wheat, barley, gluten and are produced on a line handling soya. This partly allergy information so you know what you are eating.
'The bite sized snack with the BIG cheese taste' is the slogan on the back of the product, also telling you that the cheddars are 'baked not fried'. There are contact details on the back, so if you are not satisfied with the product, you can contact them free on their careline.
Overall, i recommend this snack to eat in lunchboxes, at work, on the go or just as a general snack when you are feeling a little hungry but you dont want to eat too much before you have a proper meal.
Glastonbury 2009. This is my review of it based on the experience i had (Its so big, so many people will have different experiences)
Ok so we arrived on the friday, which is strange because you usually stay from the wednesday until the monday. The traffic on the way in was minimal.
We were directed to the car park and we parked up, got all the gear out of the car and carried it to a field already full of tents (they had already been there 48 hours) so we had to find a decent spot to put it up in. It was quite easy to find a place to camp. We got all the gear into the tent then set off to see what was happening around the festival.
We wandered through dancing men playing violins, a life sized robot which was squirting everyone with water, a man 3 times as big as me (he was on stilts) and people generally being eccentric and letting go.
Poeple are very friendly, at least the people i spoke to. The great thing is, is that the festival is split up into sections of almost mini festivals, where people gather, so for example, if you were into greenpeace and thier activities, there is a whole field full of people like you!
I spent most of my time in the 'other stage' area where lots of great bands played (Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, Maximo Park, The Prodigy, Pendulum, Bat for Lashes, Friendly Fires)
One of the highlights of the weekend was N.E.R.D. tearing up the pyramid stage. They were very entertaining but were cut short due to the festival wanting to keep to times. They were not happy and the whole crowd were chanting for them to carry on.
Another highlight for me was the weather, it was spot on most of the time, with only a few showers cropping in on the friday and sunday. Not bad at all.
I enjoyed the weekend very much. I learnt alot and would definately go again. I would recommend it to anyone. It really is a very cool place to be once a year and there are many great things to do, you will never be bored (and if you are, just open your eyes!)
